This guide covers Sunken Scrolls and Sardinium in Splatoon 2’s Octo Canyon Hero Mode: what each collectible does, how to approach the hidden routes, and specific locations described by the cited guides. Read the level directions before heading straight for the Zapfish; many items sit off the main route behind breakable crates, inkable walls, hidden platforms, or alternate rails.
What this guide covers
Octo Canyon is the single-player setting reached through a manhole in Inkopolis Square. Nintendo describes it as a developed area with Octarian research facilities. This is the Hero Mode mission set, not Octo Expansion, a separate DLC adventure. Nintendo Support describes Octo Expansion as an 80-mission add-on that requires Splatoon 2.

Sunken Scrolls are narrative collectibles that expand Hero Mode’s story. Sardinium is an upgrade resource: the cited guide says it can be spent with Power Eggs to improve Hero weapons, unlock sub abilities, or enhance the ink tank. Gameranx reported 36 Sardinium pieces in its August 1, 2017 guide; treat that as the guide’s published count, not a separately verified total.
How to search efficiently
- Work sector by sector and check each mission rather than assuming a collectible is on the direct route to the Zapfish.
- Scan for yellow balloons, green arrows, crates, inkable walls, hidden platforms, grates, rails, launchpads, and obstacles that can conceal an alternate path.
- When a route description names a checkpoint or landmark, use it as your starting point. If a listed landmark or level name does not match your game, verify the level rather than guessing: older guide pages contain inconsistent labels and apparent typos.
- Use written directions for the key action and destination; annotated screenshots or video can help with spatial orientation, but a visual route should still be checked against the named mission and landmark.
Sunken Scroll locations by sector
The directions below are selected examples from the cited 2017 guide, not a complete, independently verified inventory of every Scroll. The older guide’s sector totals conflict with its level-by-level presentation, so no total is repeated here as authoritative. Follow the landmark and action within the corresponding mission, and break or collect the indicated item at the end of the detour.

- Splat scores of enemies and hunt for treasure in a single-player focused action shooter
Tentakeel Outpost
- Balloon route: Pop the yellow balloon and follow the green arrows it reveals to reach the hidden crate.
- Walkway grate: Change into squid form and pass through the grate beneath the walkway to reach a crate below.
- Dash Track pillar: Use the Dash Track beside a launchpad to climb the pillar, then open the crate at the top.
Suction-Cup Lookout
- Balloons: Follow the balloon trail to its endpoint and open the crate it leads to.
- Octohurler platform: Ride the Octohurler platform below the stage to reach the hidden item.
- Ride Rail: Find the concealed Ride Rail above an Octorpedo launch tube and ride it to the crate overhead.
Back-Alley Cleanup
- Ledges: Check the crates on ledges off the main path.
- Inkfurler obstacles: Look for the platform beside the horizontal Inkfurler obstacles and use it to reach the hidden crate.
- Splash Wall: Go behind the Splash Wall to find the concealed crate.
Octo-Resort Spring
- Check the pillar near a flooder for a hidden route and crate.
- Use the grapple point and tower near the sprinklers to reach the item above the usual path.
- Look beyond the low barricade for a concealed crate.
- At an Octoling spawn, check for a transparent box and break it to reveal the collectible.
Slimeskin Garrison
- Follow balloon trails to their endpoint crates.
- Inspect the area by the cannon for boxes, and use rotating platforms or sponges to reach off-route ledges.
- Follow grapple links to their landing points; one route uses a splat switch to expose or access the path.
Cephalon HQ
- Follow a balloon trail to its endpoint.
- Ink the concealed platform to make it usable, then follow the route to the crate.
- Use rail jumps to reach a hidden ledge; check below the tower for a sponge route.
- Activate the launchpad to access its destination, and watch for an invisible crate along the route.
Sardinium locations and known routes
The Sardinium guide describes mission finds, additional rewards after boss fights, and hidden pieces in hubs. Its text omits a middle stretch of its level-by-level list, so the routes below are the ones it explicitly provides; missing entries are not reconstructed here.
Tentakeel Outpost
- First mission: Ink the wall to reach the high platform where the Sardinium is placed.
- Welcome to Octopia: After the third checkpoint, ink the wooden wall beside a launchpad. Climb to the roof and break the crates there.
- Sunset Octocopter: After the second checkpoint, reach the high platform at the back-left to find the Sardinium.
Suction-Cup Lookout
- Hub: Check the crate alcove for the hidden piece.
- Enter the Octohurler: Search the secret platform near a launchpad.
- The Octopark: Take the left branch of the grind rail to reach the Sardinium route.
Other missions
The cited Sardinium page’s available text does not include all intervening level routes. Do not infer a missing location from a Scroll route or a nearby obstacle; use a level-by-level reference that shows the specific Sardinium path or confirm the route in the game. The guide also reports boss-fight rewards and hidden hub pieces, so check both mission spaces and their associated areas rather than limiting the search to one item per stage.

Choosing a route reference
| Reference style | Useful for | Check before following |
|---|---|---|
| Written checkpoint directions | Identifying the action—ink a wall, pop a balloon, take a rail, or break a crate—without watching a full playthrough. | Whether the named mission, checkpoint, and landmark match the game; older guide text has inconsistencies. |
| Annotated screenshots or level videos | Understanding where a platform or detour sits relative to the stage. | Whether the visual actually shows the collectible and route for the correct mission. The cited material’s every frame and Sardinium location has not been verified here. |
