If Split Fiction crashes on launch, at the EA or Steam splash screen, during shader compilation, when entering a level, or partway through co-op, work through the fixes below in order. They start with low-risk checks—requirements, updates, file repair, overlays, and frame-rate limits—before moving to DirectX, clean-boot testing, and reinstallation. No single fix is guaranteed for every PC configuration.
Restart the game after each major change and note exactly where the crash occurs. That detail helps distinguish a local game failure from an account, connection, driver, or hardware problem.

First, identify the crash pattern
| What happens | Test first |
|---|---|
| Crash immediately after clicking Play | Requirements, Windows and GPU updates, corrupted files, overlays, DirectX |
| Crash at the EA or Steam splash screen | Platform cache, background software, account/linking issues, permissions |
| Crash during shader compilation or while entering a level | GPU driver, DirectX 12 stability, shader cache, overclocking |
| Crash only above a particular frame rate | Frame cap, V-Sync, GPU/CPU overclock or undervolt |
| Crash only during online co-op | Separate a local crash from a disconnect, invitation, authentication, or account problem |
| Crash after several minutes | Thermals, VRAM/RAM pressure, background tasks, overlays, unstable tuning |
| Blue screen, hard lock, or complete restart | Drivers, RAM, GPU stability, temperatures, power, or Windows—not just game files |
| Only one co-op player crashes | Troubleshoot that player’s PC independently |
Write down the error message, the last screen or level reached, whether single-player or local play also crashes, and whether the whole PC is affected. A network disconnect is not the same problem as a game crash.
Check the official PC requirements
Split Fiction requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, 85 GB of free storage, and at least a GeForce GTX 970 4 GB or Radeon RX 470 4 GB. EA’s recommended configuration is a Core i7-11700K or Ryzen 7 5800X, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 3070 8 GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB, DirectX 12, and 85 GB free space. See the official requirements and the Steam listing.
#1 Best Overall

- Invite a friend to play with you for free on any platform (Crossplay on PS, Xbox & PC) with the Friend’s Pass*. This wild ride comes to you from Hazelight, the co-op thrill-makers that brought you It Takes Two and A Way Out.
- Experience worlds that are entirely different from each other, unexpected new abilities, and a range of gameplay that includes platforming, puzzles, and more. There are surprises waiting for you and your friend in every new level.
- Mio and Zoe don’t get along at first, but soon enough they become each other’s only hopes. This journey will throw unexpected twists at them and if they want to make it through, they’ll need to have each other’s backs.
The minimum target is approximately 1080p at 30 FPS on Low—not a promise of flawless stability or high-refresh-rate performance. “85 GB” means available free space, not the total capacity of the drive. An SSD is preferable for loading and patching, but installing on an SSD alone is not a guaranteed crash fix.
Fix 1: Update Windows, the game, launcher, and GPU driver
Best for: launch crashes, post-update failures, unsupported features, and shader-compilation problems.
- Install pending updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Update Split Fiction through Steam, the EA app, or Epic Games Store.
- Install the current driver from the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel source.
- Restart Windows and try the game again.
Avoid third-party “driver booster” and optimizer tools. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test a rollback or a clean driver installation instead of assuming the newest driver is automatically the answer.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the installation
Best for: missing or corrupted files, interrupted updates, failed patches, and crashes after moving or modifying the installation.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Split Fiction and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- When it finishes, restart Steam and launch the game.
EA app
- Open Library.
- Find Split Fiction.
- Select the Manage icon.
- Choose Repair.
EA documents this repair path in its crash and freezing guidance. Epic Games Store users should use the launcher’s equivalent Verify command; storefront labels can change.
Verification normally replaces damaged files without deleting cloud saves. It cannot repair an outdated driver, an unstable overclock, overheating, or an incompatible overlay. Move on if the check completes successfully but the crash remains.
Fix 3: Disable overlays and background utilities
Best for: splash-screen crashes, menu crashes, and failures that occur when recording, monitoring, or opening an overlay.

- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience overlay
- AMD Adrenalin overlay
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- Recording, RGB, motherboard-monitoring, and hardware-tuning utilities
- Third-party antivirus game-mode or overlay features
Close the overlays first, relaunch the game, and test. If that changes the result, re-enable utilities one at a time until you identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security. If a temporary antivirus test is necessary, use an exclusion only for the official installation folder and restore protection afterward.

Fix 4: Remove overclocks and test with a clean boot
Best for: intermittent crashes, crashes under heavy effects, and system instability.
- Return GPU and CPU overclocks, undervolts, and aggressive tuning profiles to default.
- Temporarily return RAM XMP or EXPO settings to their default state if the PC is unstable.
- Close nonessential background applications.
- If the problem continues, perform a Windows clean boot to start with only essential services.
- Test Split Fiction, then re-enable services in batches to locate a conflict.
A crash that disappears at stock settings points toward stability, temperature, power, or software interaction—not necessarily corrupted game files. An anecdotal EA forum report describes a LowLevelFatalError on an Intel Core i9-14900K/F and a performance-core-ratio workaround. Treat that as an unverified, hardware-specific report, not an official game-wide fix. Check BIOS, microcode, and motherboard-manufacturer guidance before manually changing ratios or voltage.

Fix 5: Cap FPS and enable V-Sync
Best for: crashes in demanding scenes, crashes that appear at high frame rates, and instability caused by GPU or CPU spikes.
- Set a temporary frame cap such as 30, 60, or 120 FPS.
- Use the in-game limiter first if one is available.
- Enable V-Sync temporarily.
- Lower effects, shadows, resolution scale, and textures if VRAM usage is close to full.
- Disable frame generation or experimental upscaling features while testing.
- Remove GPU and CPU tuning profiles.
EA recommends frame-rate capping and V-Sync as general crash troubleshooting. The March 17, 2025 update notes also document a gameplay issue triggered above 150 FPS in the Royal Palace section. That does not prove high FPS causes every crash, but it makes an FPS cap a sensible diagnostic test. A cap can reduce peak performance, while V-Sync may add latency; restore higher settings gradually if stability returns.
For a deliberately conservative test, use 1080p, Low, and 30 FPS—the official minimum-style target. This is a diagnostic baseline, not a permanent recommendation for capable hardware.
Fix 6: Repair DirectX and Windows components
Best for: missing-DLL messages, launcher failures, and errors that explicitly mention DirectX or runtime files.
The game lists DirectX 12 as a requirement, so do not present forcing DirectX 11 as an official universal solution. EA’s documented procedure is:
- Close the EA app.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime installer.
- Download and run the installer.
- Follow its instructions, restart Windows, and relaunch the platform.
The legacy End-User Runtime supplies older supporting libraries; it does not replace or upgrade Windows’ integrated DirectX 12 graphics stack, and it will not repair every DirectX 12 crash. If an error names a DLL, record the exact filename. Never download individual DLLs from unofficial websites.
Fix 7: Test permissions and platform-specific issues
Best for: launcher startup failures, authentication problems, and account-specific issues.

EA app users can also repair or clear the EA app cache using EA’s current support instructions. Steam-only players should start with Steam verification and Steam Overlay testing; EA says ordinary Steam-native PC play does not require the EA app. Cross-play with console players can introduce EA-account requirements even when the PC installation is through Steam. Check linking only when the failure involves invitations, authentication, or cross-platform access rather than a local crash. EA’s Steam and PC announcement explains this distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Reinstall cleanly and collect diagnostics
Best for: persistent installation-specific corruption after the earlier tests have failed.
- Confirm that verification or repair completed successfully.
- Uninstall the game through the same storefront.
- Reinstall it through that storefront, preferably on an internal SSD with adequate free space.
- Do not delete save or configuration folders blindly; check cloud-save status and back up local data first.
- Test before restoring overlays, overclocks, or monitoring tools.
Reinstallation consumes time, bandwidth, and storage, and will not fix overheating, unstable RAM, a bad driver, or an incompatible overlay. If the crash remains, stop repeating the installation cycle and escalate with diagnostics.
Platform-specific notes
Steam
Use Steam’s file verification and test the Steam Overlay independently. The PC Steam version can run without the EA app for ordinary Steam play, so installing or reinstalling the EA app is not a required first step.

Use Library → Manage → Repair, then follow EA’s current cache-repair instructions if the launcher itself is failing. EA app account or authentication errors should be treated separately from a crash in the game process.
Epic Games Store
Use Epic’s launcher-level Verify option. Keep in mind that an additional storefront or account layer can make authentication and overlay troubleshooting different from Steam’s.
Friend’s Pass
Friend’s Pass does not change the basic PC crash sequence: check the affected player’s requirements, files, drivers, overlays, and settings. One player must own the full game, and account or platform requirements can affect joining. If only the Friend’s Pass player crashes locally, troubleshoot that PC rather than assuming the owner’s installation is defective.
Cross-play co-op
For cross-platform invitations or authentication failures, check EA account linking and platform access. For a true desktop crash, use the local-PC fixes above. A disconnect or matchmaking failure is not proof that the game is crashing.

When to stop treating this as an ordinary game crash
A blue screen, hard lock, automatic restart, or power-off points toward drivers, RAM, GPU stability, thermals, power delivery, or Windows corruption. Check Windows Event Viewer and hardware stability, and avoid repeatedly reinstalling the game. If the PC is unstable in other games or workloads, address that system problem first.
What to send EA Support
Before contacting support, reproduce the problem once with overlays and overclocks disabled and gather:
- CPU model
- GPU model and VRAM
- System RAM
- Windows version
- GPU driver version
- Storefront: Steam, EA app, or Epic
- Whether you use Friend’s Pass or cross-play
- Crash location and exact error text
- Whether single-player and co-op behave differently
- Whether file verification or repair completed successfully
- Whether the FPS cap and V-Sync test changed anything
- A DxDiag report
Use the Split Fiction support hub for crash, DirectX, DxDiag, account, and connection guidance. Avoid registry cleaners, paid “crash-fix” utilities, unofficial DLL sites, and buying new hardware before completing the reversible checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Split Fiction need the EA app on Steam?
Not for ordinary Steam-native PC play, according to EA. Cross-play with console players may still require a free EA account and account linking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I force DirectX 11?
Do not treat DirectX 11 as an official universal fix. Split Fiction lists DirectX 12 as its requirement, and EA’s supported guidance focuses on Windows updates and missing runtime libraries.
Will verifying game files delete my save?
Verification normally replaces missing or corrupted installation files rather than deleting cloud saves. Still, check cloud-save status and back up local data before deleting folders or reinstalling.
Why does it crash only during co-op?
First determine whether it is a local game crash, an invitation or authentication failure, or a network disconnect. If only one player crashes, troubleshoot that player’s PC independently.
Should I reinstall Windows or use a registry cleaner?
No. Registry cleaners and immediate Windows reinstalls are poor first-line steps. Complete the driver, file, overlay, settings, runtime, and diagnostic checks first.
The Bottom Line
Start with requirements and updates, verify the correct storefront installation, disable overlays and tuning, cap the frame rate, and test DirectX only when the error points there. If the PC blue-screens or restarts, investigate system stability instead of treating Split Fiction as merely a damaged game install.
