Split Fiction is Hazelight Studios’ two-player co-op action-adventure, following two writers trapped inside stories that shift between science fiction and fantasy. Announced in December 2024, it launched on March 6, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; current platform availability can vary by region and storefront.
What is Split Fiction?
In Split Fiction, players take the roles of Mio and Zoe, writers with sharply different imaginations: Mio writes science fiction, while Zoe writes fantasy. They become trapped in their stories after being connected to a machine designed to steal creative ideas. To escape, they must cooperate and move between the worlds they imagined. The game alternates between sci-fi and fantasy settings, changing its mechanics and abilities along the way. Its official descriptions include platforming, stealth and puzzles, as well as set pieces such as escaping a sun going supernova, a monkey dance battle, hoverboard tricks, gravity bikes and a sandshark. When did Split Fiction come out, and where can you play it?
EA announced Split Fiction in December 2024 and released it on March 6, 2025. EA’s launch announcement listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and the EA app. It gave a launch price of $49.99 and ratings of ESRB Teen and PEGI 16; those are launch-announcement details, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability in every market. EA’s maintained game page now refers to cross-play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, while Hazelight says cross-play works between all platforms on which the game is available. Steam lists Hazelight Studios as developer and Electronic Arts as publisher, with a March 6, 2025 release date and online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op and cross-platform multiplayer features. Steam store page.

Can you play Split Fiction solo?
No. Split Fiction is designed for two players, and PlayStation’s FAQ says the game cannot be played solo. You can play together locally or online. On PS5, local co-op requires two DualSense wireless controllers. EA launch announcement; PlayStation product page and FAQ.
Do both players need to buy Split Fiction?
No. One player who owns the full game can invite a friend through Friend’s Pass, allowing the invited player to join the full co-op adventure without buying a second copy. The invited player must install Friend’s Pass, have a persistent internet connection and use an applicable platform account. Is Split Fiction cross-play?
Yes. Hazelight says cross-play is supported between all platforms where Split Fiction is available. EA’s page names PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Confirm that the game is available on both players’ intended platforms and in their regions before making plans. Hazelight FAQ; EA game page.
What to check before playing together
- Confirm both players’ platforms support the game and cross-play in their regions.
- Choose local or online co-op.
- If one player will use Friend’s Pass, have that player install it and meet the internet and platform-account requirements.
- For couch co-op on PS5, make sure two DualSense wireless controllers are available.

In EA’s reveal announcement, Hazelight founder Josef Fares said: “At Hazelight, we’ve been building co-op games for 10 years, and with every game we push beyond what players expect for action-adventure co-op games.
