What is Hell Pie?
Developed by Sluggerfly and published by Headup, Hell Pie is an action-adventure 3D platformer released on Steam on July 21, 2022. You play Nate, the “Demon of Bad Taste,” tasked with gathering disgusting ingredients for Satan’s birthday pie. How does Hell Pie play?
Movement built around a chain
Nate is accompanied by Nugget, a cherub attached to him by a chain. Meristation describes Nugget as central to extending jumps and building momentum. A GodisaGeek excerpt displayed on Steam calls the grappling gameplay a source of “some of the best locomotion in the genre.” That is one outlet’s judgment, not a consensus rating, but it captures the game’s main appeal: traversal is more expressive than simply running and jumping.
Exploration alongside more linear sections
Meristation praises fluid movement and exploration in the larger areas, while noting that the game also includes more linear sections. That mix may suit players who want room to explore without expecting every level to be an open-ended playground. The review’s praise is qualified by its control concerns: it reports overly sensitive collisions and commands that sometimes were not executed, which could make navigation frustrating. Is the humor a deal-breaker?
The game’s gross-out premise shapes its tone throughout: Nate is collecting revolting pie ingredients for Satan, and the official description presents him as the Demon of Bad Taste. Meristation characterizes the humor as juvenile and not consistently funny. Comedy is subjective, but players who dislike crude or sexual jokes should treat the tone as a substantial part of the experience rather than something they can easily ignore.
How does Hell Pie compare with other recent indie 3D platformers?
Its clearest point of distinction is chain-assisted movement and momentum. If traversal is what you value most, the praise for its locomotion is a strong reason to consider it. If you prioritize precise controls, be aware that Meristation reported sensitive collisions and occasional inputs that did not register. The level design offers both larger areas to explore and more linear stretches, while its unusually crude comic premise sets it apart tonally. The available reviews support these comparisons, but not a claim that Hell Pie is categorically better or worse than the broader indie platformer field.

Steam’s listing showed 91% positive from 1,102 user reviews in a search result captured on October 8, 2026. This is a time-sensitive Steam snapshot, not a fixed score; the count and percentage can change. The GodisaGeek excerpt on the store page displayed a score of 9 and praised the grappling-based locomotion, while Meristation’s review balanced movement and exploration praise with criticism of controls and humor.
