Split Fiction is a two-player-only adventure built around a relentless stream of new worlds, abilities, and genres. That variety makes it an energetic co-op ride, but it can also leave the experience feeling overstuffed; the criticism is clearest in the Switch 2 review cited here and should not be treated as a verdict on every platform. Before buying, know the essential catch: you need another person to play, locally or online.
Why Split Fiction is such a fast-moving co-op adventure
Hazelight’s story pairs Mio, a science-fiction writer, with Zoe, a fantasy writer. They become trapped in a machine designed to steal creative ideas, and the worlds they encounter draw on both characters’ imaginations. The result is a split-screen adventure designed around two players coordinating their actions and timing, not a solo campaign with an optional second controller.

The game’s defining feature is how often it changes what the pair are doing. EA describes a mix of platforming, stealth, puzzles, and other sequences, with new abilities and mechanics introduced across shifting sci-fi and fantasy settings. That breadth is the thrill: a partnership has to keep adapting rather than settle into one routine. It is also the source of the “stretches too thin” complaint. A game that keeps adding ideas risks making each one feel like a brief stop on the way to the next. Can you play Split Fiction solo?
No. PlayStation describes Split Fiction as a game for two and says there is no solo mode. You need a second player whether you choose couch co-op or online play. If you do not have a reliable partner, that requirement matters more than the game’s genre changes or platform features. PlayStation’s game page

Do both players need to buy Split Fiction?
No, not for the full online game. EA’s Friend’s Pass lets both players download the pass and try the first two levels free. After the trial, one player must own the full game for the pair to continue; progress carries into the full version. Friend’s Pass lowers the cost of getting a friend into the adventure, but it does not provide a way to play alone or let two non-owners complete the game. EA Help’s setup and Friend’s Pass guide
Is Split Fiction cross-play?
Yes. EA Help lists cross-play among PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, including when a player uses Friend’s Pass. Online invitations require EA and platform accounts, and cross-play must be enabled when inviting someone on another platform. Online access is also necessary to use the pass and play together remotely.

For online console play, EA says both players need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass, depending on their platform. What do you need for couch co-op?
Local co-op is available, so two people can play together on the same system. On PS5, PlayStation specifies two DualSense wireless controllers. That is a practical extra requirement: the game’s co-op design does not mean a second controller is included with the game. PlayStation’s PS5 listing

Which platforms can you play Split Fiction on?
EA’s current product page lists the EA app, Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation, and Xbox. The game released on March 6, 2025; EA’s launch announcement named PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, while Nintendo Switch 2 appears in the later product-page platform list. TechRadar’s review is specifically about the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. It praises the underlying co-op adventure but says the port has lower image quality and frame rate than PS5, and that the range of local and online play options can feel overwhelming. Its reported comparison is roughly 1080p/30fps on Switch 2 versus 4K/60fps on PS5; those are that reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee for every play session or a platform-wide benchmark.

The same review estimates about 15 hours of playtime, depending on exploration and side stories. Treat that as one reviewer’s estimate, not an official completion-time figure. Its criticisms are useful if you are weighing the Switch 2 port, but they do not establish how the other versions perform or whether every player will find the game’s pacing too busy. Who should play it—and who should skip it?
- Consider it if: you have a willing co-op partner and enjoy games that keep changing their mechanics, settings, and challenges.
- Use Friend’s Pass if: you want to test the pairing before committing. Both players can try the first two levels free; one must own the full game to continue.
- Think carefully if: you mainly play alone, dislike frequent shifts in gameplay, or are choosing Switch 2 specifically for the strongest reported visual performance.
EA’s March 6, 2025 launch announcement said more than 26 media outlets had given the game perfect scores at launch. That is EA’s publisher announcement, not an independently verified review tally.
