If Split Fiction lags in multiplayer on PC, first check whether the problem is online delay—such as your partner or the game world jumping or catching up—or local frame-rate stutter, where the picture is choppy even when the connection is not the key difference. Those symptoms point to different troubleshooting steps; the title alone does not identify one universal cause.
Identify what kind of lag you are seeing
Watch for the distinction before changing settings:
- Likely connection trouble: your partner or the game world jumps, catches up, or responds late during online play.
- Likely PC performance trouble: the image itself is choppy or the frame rate is low, rather than the problem being limited to online interaction.
EA handles connection problems separately from slow-game and graphics issues in its connection troubleshooting guidance and PC performance guidance. The distinction is a way to narrow down the cause, not a diagnosis specific to Split Fiction.
Fix possible online connection lag
Try these checks in order, testing online play again after each meaningful change.

- Check EA service status. EA lists server status as an early connection check. If a service issue is reported, changing PC graphics settings or router configuration is unlikely to resolve it.
- Close unnecessary background applications. EA notes that running applications use processing power and memory, which can affect the computer. Close apps you do not need, then test again.
- Restart the router. Turn it off, unplug it for about one minute, reconnect it, and then retry the game.
- Test a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi. EA says hardwired connections can be more reliable than wireless ones. An Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic test: if online play improves when wired, local Wi-Fi conditions may be contributing. It is not a guaranteed fix for server, routing, or ISP problems.
- If you remain on Wi-Fi, check the signal environment. Router placement, distance, walls, electronics, and nearby network interference can affect wireless reliability.
A high download-speed result alone does not rule out intermittent instability, and EA does not specify a Split Fiction-specific speed, latency, or packet-loss threshold in its connection guidance.
Leave DNS and router changes for later
EA mentions changing DNS as a possible troubleshooting step, but does not establish that it fixes Split Fiction latency. DNS providers are third parties, and advanced network changes may depend on your router and ISP. Follow the router manufacturer’s instructions or contact your ISP before changing settings you are unsure about.

Fix possible low FPS or local stutter
Compare your PC with EA’s published requirements before treating choppy visuals as a network problem. EA lists these targets for the PC version:

These are EA’s published targets, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will perform identically. Check the full, current Split Fiction PC requirements.

- Check your PC against the requirements. In Windows, run DxDiag to review the processor, memory, graphics card, driver version and date, and DirectX version. EA recommends checking requirements and graphics-driver currency when troubleshooting a slow PC game or graphics problems.
- Update the graphics driver if needed. Use the graphics-card maker’s current driver for your specific hardware, then restart the PC and test again.
- Close background applications. This can free processing and memory resources that may contribute to local performance issues.
- Repair the game files in the EA app. EA includes file repair among its general PC troubleshooting actions.
- Try a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. EA also suggests these as general PC performance options. Change one setting at a time and check whether the local frame pacing improves.
These are general EA PC troubleshooting steps, not evidence of a Split Fiction-specific multiplayer fix.

If the visual performance appears normal but the problem arises during online play, local co-op can help distinguish online-only symptoms from local ones. EA says local co-op can be played offline; on PC, two players can use one controller and keyboard/mouse. Friend’s Pass supports online play when one player owns the game and the friend installs Friend’s Pass; online play requires an internet connection and applicable platform accounts. For cross-play invitations, EA says to use the EA Friends List, keep the game running while signed in to an EA account, and check cross-play settings when relevant. See EA’s Friend’s Pass guide.

If local co-op is smooth but online play has delayed responses or rubber-banding, that is useful evidence that the symptom is associated with online play; it does not by itself identify whether the cause is your Wi-Fi, ISP, routing, or a service issue.
What the March 2025 update does—and does not—establish
EA’s March 17, 2025 update notes say that the update fixed several minor visual glitches and pops visible during online play, along with a Royal Palace rolling-wheel puzzle that did not move fast enough above 150 FPS. These are specific historical fixes, not evidence that a current multiplayer lag problem is caused by those issues or that all online performance problems have been resolved.
