If Split Fiction is lagging in multiplayer on PS5, first check whether both players can join and whether the problem affects one or both of you. Then work through the eight checks below, starting with EA service status and co-op setup before changing your home network. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes; EA’s general connection guidance does not confirm a current Split Fiction outage or a PS5-specific cure.
What kind of multiplayer problem are you seeing?
“Lag” can mean delayed controls, rubber-banding, brief stutters, failed invitations, or a co-op session that disconnects. Those symptoms may have different causes. The official Split Fiction and EA connection pages do not provide a game-specific test to distinguish network delay from frame-rate stutter, so use the comparisons below as practical troubleshooting logic, not a definitive diagnosis.
- If you cannot invite or join your friend, check online status, account, cross-play, and invitation settings first.
- If the session connects but play feels delayed or unstable, compare what each player experiences and test the network steps below.
- If only one player sees visual stutters, that is useful information to report, but it does not by itself prove the cause.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Check EA service status
EA recommends checking service status before treating a connection problem as a local PS5 issue. The official sources cited here do not establish that Split Fiction currently has an outage. Check EA’s service status guidance before changing router settings.
2. Confirm both players are online and eligible for online play
EA says both players need to be online for co-op. Console online play also requires the applicable platform subscription; PlayStation’s Split Fiction listing identifies PS Plus as required for online play. Make sure both players are signed in and online, and that the PS5 player has the required subscription.

3. Check cross-play and invitations
Split Fiction supports cross-play across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S according to EA’s current getting-started guide. On console, EA says to enable cross-play invites at Options > Privacy Settings. Send the invitation through the in-game system or EA Friends List, and check that your friend is added there. An EA Account is required to invite a friend.
4. Restart the router
EA’s general connection guidance recommends turning the router off, unplugging it, waiting about a minute, reconnecting it, and then trying again. This is a general network step, not a Split Fiction-specific fix.

5. Test a wired connection
If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet if practical and retry the session. EA says, “Hardwired connections can be much more reliable than wireless ones.” A wired test can help you assess whether Wi-Fi is involved; it is not required for the game and cannot resolve every cause. If you do not already have a suitable cable, buying one is optional.
6. Improve the Wi-Fi signal
If you need to stay wireless, move the router to an open position closer to the PS5 where possible. Distance, walls, large objects, and nearby electronics can weaken or interfere with a Wi-Fi signal, according to EA’s connection troubleshooting guide. Avoid placing the router behind obstacles or near electronics that may interfere.

7. Consider wireless congestion
In a crowded wireless environment, EA recommends considering a less busy Wi-Fi channel. Router controls differ, so contact your internet service provider for help if you are unsure how to check or change the channel; do not alter settings you are uncomfortable managing.
8. Check PS5 date and time, then compare symptoms
EA notes that an incorrect device date or time can sometimes cause connection issues. Check the PS5’s date and time settings, then retry. If the problem remains, note whether your co-op partner experiences the same delay, stutter, or interruption and whether other online services work. That comparison can help you describe the issue to EA or your ISP, but it is not an official Split Fiction diagnostic.

How to narrow down what to report
Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell whether the symptom changes. Note whether the issue is an invitation failure, a disconnect, delayed input, rubber-banding, or a visual stutter; whether it affects one or both players; and whether the PS5 was on Wi-Fi or wired during the test. If other online services work but Split Fiction remains affected, contact EA Split Fiction support. If the issue appears tied to your connection across services, contact your ISP.
