Hazelight’s action-adventure follows writers Mio and Zoe through a simulation of their stories, shifting between science-fiction and fantasy settings as the pair tackle platforming, stealth, puzzles, and other level-specific challenges. A single owner can bring a friend into the full online adventure with Friend’s Pass, which makes the game easier to share—but it remains a commitment that depends on having a second player.
What is Split Fiction?
Developed by Hazelight Studios, Split Fiction puts two writers, Mio and Zoe, inside a shared simulation of their imagined worlds. Electronic Arts describes the journey as moving between science-fiction and fantasy, with each level bringing its own mechanics and activities. The official description includes platforming, stealth, puzzles, and more, so the central appeal is the change in what the pair must do together rather than one repeated challenge. EA’s game page introduces the premise and its mix of worlds.

That variety is a clear design intention, not proof that every sequence lands equally well. EA’s launch announcement quotes Hazelight founder Josef Fares calling the gameplay variety “insane” and saying he was proud of the game’s polish; that is promotional commentary, not an independent assessment. The March 6, 2025 announcement also notes that Hazelight’s previous game, It Takes Two, had sold 23 million units worldwide at the time. That figure belongs to the predecessor, not Split Fiction.
Can you play Split Fiction solo?
No. Split Fiction is designed exclusively for cooperative play and cannot be played solo, according to the PlayStation listing. Before buying, make sure you have a reliable partner for the time you want to play; this is not a game with a single-player campaign as a fallback. PlayStation’s listing also specifies that local PS5 co-op requires two DualSense controllers.

Do both players need to buy Split Fiction?
No, if you are playing online. One person who owns the full game can invite a friend through Friend’s Pass, allowing that friend to join the entire online adventure. Both players can also install Friend’s Pass to play the first two levels free; after those levels, one player must own the full game to continue. EA’s Friend’s Pass and setup guidance explains the arrangement.
The distinction matters: Friend’s Pass is a way for one owner to bring a second player along, not a way for two non-owners to access the complete game. It can reduce the cost of playing together, but it does not change the two-player requirement.

Does Split Fiction support couch co-op and cross-play?
Yes to both, with different setup needs. On PS5, local co-op uses two DualSense controllers on the same console. Online cross-play is supported among PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. EA says both online players need online access and accounts, and console players need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass for online play. Check the relevant platform’s current online-service requirements before starting, since subscriptions and policies can change. EA Help’s setup information covers cross-play and online access.
What accessibility options does Split Fiction offer?
The PlayStation listing describes visual comfort settings, alternative audio cues, control options, and the ability to skip puzzles. It also characterizes subtitles and captions as basic: they cover the main story and main characters, as well as important gameplay sounds. These options may help some players, but the listing alone does not establish that the game meets every player’s accessibility needs. Review the current platform listing and settings details against your specific requirements before purchasing. The PlayStation listing provides the described options.

When did Split Fiction come out?
The initial release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC was March 6, 2025, according to EA and Steam. EA’s official page lists Switch 2 news dated June 5, 2025; that later platform announcement is distinct from the initial launch date. EA announced a US launch price of $49.99 in March 2025, which is historical launch pricing rather than a current price quote. It is a natural fit for two people who want an adventure designed around playing together and are interested in moving between different kinds of challenges and settings. Friend’s Pass makes online play more convenient when only one person owns the game, while local PS5 play requires two controllers. It is a poor fit for someone shopping for a solo experience or who cannot count on a second player. The most useful decision is not whether co-op is optional—it is not—but whether the game’s two-player format suits your situation.
