Split Fiction and It Takes Two are both two-player-only adventures from Hazelight, but they suit different pairs. Choose It Takes Two for a relationship story about a married couple and support for older consoles; choose Split Fiction for alternating sci-fi and fantasy worlds, optional Side Stories, and cross-play on supported platform pairings. Both offer a Friend’s Pass, so one full-game owner can invite a partner online, subject to platform and account requirements.

At a glance: what sets the games apart?

Comparison Split Fiction It Takes Two
Story premise Writers Mio and Zoe, whose creative perspectives differ, are trapped in a simulation of their stories. Married couple Cody and May are turned into dolls as they try to repair their relationship.
Gameplay shape Alternating science-fiction and fantasy settings, with new abilities and mechanics across levels. A relationship-centered progression with mechanics that change from level to level.
Optional content Self-contained optional Side Stories. Hazelight’s guide lists more than 25 hidden mini-games.
Platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch family; Switch 2 has a separately announced cross-play arrangement.
Studio guide’s story-time estimate 12–15 hours. 12–16 hours.

The story-time estimates and mini-game count come from Hazelight’s official store guide, not an independent playtime study or separately verified inventory. The estimates overlap, so they are a rough guide rather than a deciding advantage. Hazelight’s comparison guide describes both games’ content.

How do their stories and tone differ?

It Takes Two is about a couple’s relationship

Cody and May are married parents whose relationship is in trouble. The story follows them after they are turned into dolls, putting their partnership at the center of the adventure. That makes it the more direct choice for players drawn to a story about a couple trying to reconnect.

Split Fiction pairs two very different writers

Mio and Zoe begin as strangers, with contrasting science-fiction and fantasy perspectives. Their shared crisis forces them to rely on each other as they move through simulations of their stories. EA describes the game’s changing worlds and abilities as part of its premise; Hazelight founder Josef Fares said the sci-fi and fantasy shifts let the studio pursue varied gameplay and storytelling. EA’s announcement includes Fares’s statement.

How do the gameplay and side activities compare?

Both games keep changing their mechanics across levels, so neither is built around one fixed activity. Split Fiction emphasizes the contrast between science-fiction and fantasy worlds, with platforming, stealth, puzzles, and other mechanics. Its optional Side Stories are described by Hazelight as mini-adventures. It Takes Two also varies its level mechanics, and Hazelight’s guide lists more than 25 hidden mini-games.

The useful distinction is the kind of variety: Split Fiction foregrounds shifts between distinct imagined worlds, while It Takes Two frames its changing play around Cody and May’s relationship. The number of activities alone does not establish which game offers the better experience.

Which platforms support each game, and can different platforms play together?

Platform compatibility can settle the choice before story preference does. It Takes Two reaches older consoles, including PS4, Xbox One, and the original Nintendo Switch. Split Fiction is listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. EA lists Split Fiction cross-play on supported pairings, but players should check their exact hardware combination rather than assume every platform can join every other one. EA’s Split Fiction product page lists its platforms and cross-play.

It Takes Two on Switch 2

EA announced on September 9, 2026 that It Takes Two would arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 15, 2026 in most regions, and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. EA’s announcement says Switch 2 players can play cross-platform with Switch 2, PC, Xbox One or Series X|S, and PS4 or PS5 players. Its footnote excludes the original Nintendo Switch from that cross-play statement. Check the announcement and platform details for the pairing you plan to use: EA’s Switch 2 announcement.

Do both players need to buy a copy?

No. Both games have a Friend’s Pass, which lets one person who owns the full game invite a partner to play online. That does not remove platform-specific conditions: both players need the relevant platform accounts, and cross-play requires account linking where applicable. Console online play requires the relevant PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription for both players, according to EA’s Split Fiction help page.

For Split Fiction, EA also describes a free demo: both players download Friend’s Pass to play the first two levels. To continue beyond the demo, one player must own the full game. Confirm the requirements for the platform and online arrangement before buying; a second full copy is not automatically necessary.

Which game should you play first?

  • Start with It Takes Two if either player needs PS4, Xbox One, or original Nintendo Switch support, or if a story centered on a married couple is the bigger draw.
  • Choose Split Fiction if the pair wants science-fiction and fantasy world shifts, optional Side Stories, or cross-play between supported platforms.
  • Check hardware before deciding if you will play online from different systems. Switch 2 and original Switch should not be treated as the same cross-play case for It Takes Two.
  • Use Friend’s Pass to avoid an unnecessary second purchase when one player can host or invite under the game’s platform requirements.

There is no universal winner established by the available evidence. The practical choice is the story, side content, and platform pairing that fit the two players.
