What SpongeBob content is in Fortnite?
GameSquare announced four SpongeBob-themed Fortnite islands on December 17, 2024, in a campaign involving its Zoned business and Paramount Game Studios. The announcement called them “official games on Fortnite,” but also stated that the campaign was not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Epic Games. These are UEFN island experiences, not evidence of a SpongeBob Battle Royale outfit.
Epic’s separate creator article, published June 5, 2026, identifies SpongeBob as a licensed Sidekick. Sidekicks are a distinct feature from the themed islands: the article explains how creators may use Sidekicks in island NPC behavior, subject to a specific restriction for licensed characters.

Can creators use SpongeBob as an NPC?
Not as a freely placed licensed-character NPC. In Epic’s June 5, 2026 creator guidance, SpongeBob is listed as a licensed Sidekick that creators cannot use as an NPC. That restriction does not mean Sidekicks cannot appear in NPC-related mechanics at all.
How Cosmetic Sync changes the picture
Epic also documents Cosmetic Sync: an NPC can take the form of the player’s equipped Sidekick, including a licensed Sidekick. This is different from a creator directly selecting and placing SpongeBob as an NPC. The feature ties the NPC’s form to the player’s equipped Sidekick; it does not remove the stated restriction on using licensed Sidekicks as NPCs.

Is a SpongeBob cosmetic in the Fortnite Item Shop?
The cited sources do not verify a current SpongeBob Item Shop listing or price. Epic says the shop rotates items and recommends checking Fortnite for live availability; Epic Support cannot grant items or offers that are not currently in the shop. Check the in-game shop rather than treating the islands or the Sidekick creator guidance as proof that a purchasable SpongeBob cosmetic is available.
What the announcements establish
The GameSquare announcement gives the island names, descriptions, codes, and campaign attribution, but does not provide player counts, age ratings, or an up-to-date status for each island. Paramount Senior Vice President of Games and Emerging Media Doug Rosen described the collaboration this way: “We know so many fans of SpongeBob SquarePants are gamers, so it was a natural next step for us to bring Bikini Bottom to life in this authentic format for them.”
