Titans of the Tide is a charming, approachable SpongeBob platformer—and the strongest candidate for the series’ best game since Battle for Bikini Bottom among Purple Lamp’s recent entries. Its familiar world, lively presentation, and SpongeBob-and-Patrick teamwork make a persuasive case. Repetitive platforming and a difficulty curve that rarely rises keep it from being an unqualified return to the older game’s heights.
What kind of SpongeBob game is Titans of the Tide?
Released November 18, 2025, SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide is a single-player 3D platforming adventure from developer Purple Lamp and publisher THQ Nordic. It is available for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. THQ Nordic’s launch announcement lists a suggested launch price of $39.99 / €39.99; that is historical pricing, not a current store quote.
The story turns a clash between King Neptune and the Flying Dutchman into a ghostly crisis across Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob and Patrick set out to restore order, crossing places including Neptune’s Palace, Mount Bikini, and Goldfish Island. The official game site highlights boss fights with the Flying Dutchman, King Neptune, and Hibernation Sandy, alongside the duo’s distinct platforming abilities. THQ Nordic says the game is fully voiced by the original cast.
How does the SpongeBob-and-Patrick gameplay work?
Switching between the two heroes is the central hook. SpongeBob and Patrick bring different skills to platforming and exploration; Nintendo’s US store listing specifically identifies Patrick’s grappling and burrowing. The appeal is not simply having a second character available: the strongest use of the concept is when a route or obstacle asks you to bring the right ability into play.

That gives the adventure a clear rhythm of traversing broad levels, dealing with enemies, and looking for secrets and collectibles. Meristation’s review describes a traditional 3D platformer with challenges and minigames as well as exploration. It places the game in the context of Purple Lamp’s earlier Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated and The Cosmic Shake, rather than treating the new character-switching idea as a wholesale reinvention of the genre.
Does the world and presentation capture SpongeBob?
This is where the game makes its most consistent case. Familiar locations, animation, voice performances, and lighthearted dialogue give the adventure a recognizable SpongeBob feel. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer, who played on PC with a controller, praised those elements and found the experience charming and approachable. THQ Nordic also names familiar characters such as Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton among the cast of the adventure.

The atmosphere helps carry stretches where the platforming itself is less surprising. The humor and character performances supply a strong sense of place; they do not, however, make every obstacle or sequence feel fresh. The presentation is a genuine strength, but it cannot fully compensate for repeated gameplay patterns.
Is it the best SpongeBob game since Battle for Bikini Bottom?
As a judgment about the recent Purple Lamp games, it is a defensible pick—but it depends on what you value. Titans of the Tide combines recognizable SpongeBob charm with a useful two-character premise and the broad-level structure of a classic 3D platformer. That makes it an easy recommendation for players who want an accessible return to Bikini Bottom and enjoy searching a colorful world.

- Chaos Theory mode lets you play through key moments of your favorite films - with a twist.
- Immerse yourself in a compelling and original Jurassic World narrative set after the Earth-shattering events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
- Take control with deeper management tools and creative options; Construct and customize new buildings and flex your managerial muscle across never-before-seen locations ranging from dense forests to rocky deserts.
The comparison is less convincing if your favorite part of Battle for Bikini Bottom was a consistently varied challenge. Tom’s Guide found the platforming repetitive and said the difficulty did not meaningfully ramp up. Meristation likewise frames the game as a traditional platformer built around levels, secrets, collectibles, and challenges—not as a major departure from Purple Lamp’s previous work. The available reviews support a strong, enjoyable entry, not an objective ranking that settles the series debate.
- Character control: The SpongeBob-and-Patrick switch adds useful variety, especially when their distinct abilities matter to traversal.
- Exploration: Broad levels, secrets, and collectibles give players reasons to look around, though the available reviews do not establish that exploration surpasses the older game.
- Challenge and pacing: Its approachable difficulty welcomes casual players but may feel too steady for anyone hoping for a tougher progression.
- Presentation: Familiar settings, animation, voice work, and humor are the clearest reasons to spend time in this version of Bikini Bottom.
Who should play it?
Choose Titans of the Tide if you want a lighthearted 3D platformer, value SpongeBob’s characters and atmosphere, or like switching between heroes with different movement abilities. It is also a reasonable fit for players who prefer a gentler adventure over demanding platform challenges.

- Join the new "recruited" members of Amanda Wallers infamous Task Force X, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark
- Players can experiment with a range of different play styles to deal maximum damage to their enemies
- Whether in single-player mode or online with up to three friends, players can tackle this suicide mission in their own way
- All team members have their own movement mechanism
Look elsewhere if repetition quickly wears you down or you need a difficulty curve that keeps escalating. The central trade-off is straightforward: strong SpongeBob personality and an accessible adventure, rather than consistently inventive or demanding platforming.

THQ Nordic announced several packages in August 2025. Their announced contents are useful for distinguishing editions, but do not establish current stock or pricing:
| Edition | Announced contents |
|---|---|
| Standard | Base game. |
| Digital Deluxe | Base game and Tidal Season Pass. |
| Ultimate | Base game, Tidal Season Pass, Natural Costume Pack, Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, The Cosmic Shake, and a Cosmic Shake costume pack. |
| Ghostly Edition | Digital Deluxe game, steelbook, collectible patch, keychain, and lenticular prints. |
The publisher described the Tidal Season Pass as including two challenge DLC packs and two costume packs. Steam’s product page lists separate downloadable content, including the pass. Store pricing, discounts, and availability can change, so check the storefront for current details rather than relying on launch prices or an announcement of package contents.
Review verdict
SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide earns its place among the series’ better recent platformers through atmosphere, humor, and a welcome partnership between SpongeBob and Patrick. It can reasonably be called Bob’s best since Battle for Bikini Bottom if charm and accessibility matter more to you than escalating challenge or constant mechanical novelty. For players who want the older game’s sense of discovery and a more demanding climb, the case is less conclusive: this is a pleasant, occasionally repetitive adventure, not a proven new series high-water mark.
