“Unable to load DLL ‘SqlServerSpatial110.dll’”
If sqlserverspatial110.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start an application that uses SQL Server spatial features. The safest repair is to identify the application that needs it, then repair that application or restore its matching Microsoft SQL Server spatial runtime.
You may see one of these messages:
Unable to load DLL 'SqlServerSpatial110.dll':
The specified module could not be found.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
Or:
Unable to find an entry point named 'SetClrFeatureSwitchMap'
in DLL 'SqlServerSpatial110.dll'.
The first message can mean that the DLL itself is absent, but it can also mean that another dependency required by the DLL is missing. The entry-point message usually indicates that the managed and native SQL Server spatial components do not match.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- One desktop program stopped starting after an update: repair or reinstall that program first.
- An ASP.NET, IIS, service, or server application fails after deployment: restore its app-local
Microsoft.SqlServer.Typesfiles and verify x86 or x64 placement. - Several programs report the error: check whether the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 System CLR Types package is missing or damaged.
- The error began after antivirus activity: inspect Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
- The message mentions an entry point rather than a missing module: align the managed
Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.dllassembly with the native SQL Server spatial DLL. - The error says “incorrect format”: the process and DLL architectures probably do not match.
- You found the file in a random download archive: do not use it. Obtain the runtime from Microsoft or reinstall the application that supplied it.
sqlserverspatial110.dll is not a Windows system DLL, a device driver, or a general-purpose file supplied by .NET Framework. It is a native Microsoft SQL Server spatial-library component from the SQL Server 2012-era family. It works with the managed Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.dll assembly to provide spatial types such as geometry and geography. Microsoft describes this native and managed relationship in its SQL Server spatial architecture documentation.

1. Identify the application that owns the failure
The application name is more important than the DLL name. The correct repair depends on whether the file came from SQL Server itself, an older business application, a reporting tool, an installer, or a self-contained .NET application.
Check the error window
Write down the program named in the title bar or message. If the error appears during startup, look at the shortcut you used. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and read the Target field.
If the failure appears in the background:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the application that closes or shows the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location when available.
For an IIS or service failure, check the application or service name rather than searching all of Windows for a replacement DLL. A web deployment may intentionally keep native files inside its own application directory.
Check whether SQL Server components are installed
- Press Windows key, type Installed apps, and open it.
- Search for SQL Server, System CLR Types, or Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
- Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for older installations.
The file may have arrived with SQL Server 2012, its Feature Pack, the Microsoft System CLR Types package, or an application that bundled the Microsoft.SqlServer.Types NuGet package. Microsoft states that SQL Server spatial types can be installed separately when SQL Server itself is not installed or when the spatial component was omitted. See the Microsoft EF6 spatial prerequisites.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Repair the affected program first
For a normal Windows application, this is the most controlled repair because it restores the files and versions selected by the application vendor.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 packaged apps
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset only if the application’s data can be recreated or backed up.
Classic desktop applications
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Complete the installer and restart Windows if requested.
If there is no repair option, download the application installer from the developer’s official source and reinstall it. For a game or packaged vendor application, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function when available.
A successful repair should remove the startup error without requiring you to copy a DLL manually. If the error remains, note whether the message changed. A switch from “module could not be found” to an entry-point error is useful evidence that the file is present but mismatched.
3. Install the matching SQL Server 2012 spatial runtime
If the application specifically requires the SQL Server 2012-era component, use Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 SP4 Feature Pack. It includes Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012 SP4, distributed as SQLSysClrTypes.msi in separate x86 and x64 packages. The package implements SQL Server geometry, geography, and hierarchyid types.
Rank #2
- Open Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 SP4 Feature Pack.
- Download the package matching the application process architecture.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Accept the license terms and complete setup.
- Restart the affected application.
Choose x86 when the failing program is 32-bit, even if Windows itself is 64-bit. Choose x64 for a 64-bit process. Install both only when the computer genuinely runs applications requiring both architectures.
The name 110 identifies the SQL Server 2012-era library family. Do not assume that a newer SQL Server spatial DLL is a drop-in replacement. A file named SqlServerSpatial130.dll or SqlServerSpatial140.dll should not be renamed to SqlServerSpatial110.dll.
If the installer reports that the component is already installed, use Apps and Features or Programs and Features to select the SQL Server System CLR Types entry and choose Repair or Change, if offered.
4. Match the managed and native components
Many .NET applications load two related pieces:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.dll, the managed assemblySqlServerSpatial110.dll, the native spatial library
They must come from compatible SQL Server generations and servicing levels. Installing a native file from one release beside a managed assembly from another can produce the SetClrFeatureSwitchMap entry-point error.
For a self-contained application:
- Open the application’s installation directory.
- Look for
Microsoft.SqlServer.Types.dll. - Look for folders named
SqlServerTypesx86andSqlServerTypesx64. - Check whether the native file exists in the folder matching the process architecture.
- Compare the application’s deployed files with the vendor’s current installer or deployment instructions.
- Reinstall the application’s matching
Microsoft.SqlServer.Typesdependency rather than copying a file from another computer.
The official Microsoft.SqlServer.Types 11.0.0 NuGet package is the SQL Server 2012-era package intended to allow SQL spatial types on systems without SQL Server installed. Developers should follow the package’s loader instructions and deploy the native x86 or x64 files with the application.
For ASP.NET or IIS:
- Confirm whether the application pool runs as 32-bit.
- Open IIS Manager.
- Select Application Pools.
- Right-click the relevant pool and choose Advanced Settings.
- Check Enable 32-Bit Applications.
- Deploy the matching
SqlServerTypesx86orSqlServerTypesx64files. - Recycle the application pool and test the site again.
An x86 process needs the x86 native DLL. A 64-bit operating system does not make a 32-bit process capable of loading x64 libraries.
5. Check quarantine and incomplete updates
Security software can remove or quarantine a file, and an interrupted application update can leave the managed assembly without its native counterpart.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent events for the affected application or SQL Server component.
- If the file was quarantined, verify its original path and trusted publisher before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only when it came from the application’s trusted installer or Microsoft’s package. Otherwise, reinstall from the official source. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to load an unknown DLL.
If the error appeared immediately after an application update, use the application’s repair option or reinstall its current release. Avoid mixing old native files with newly updated managed assemblies.

6. Verify architecture and file locations
A 32-bit process commonly loads native files from an application’s x86 directory, while a 64-bit process needs the x64 version. A wrong-architecture DLL may produce an “incorrect format” message rather than “not found.”
To identify the process architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s deployment folders. Look for duplicate copies of SqlServerSpatial110.dll and record each path and file version. The application may be loading a copy from its own directory rather than the one installed by SQL Server.

Do not copy a loose DLL into C:WindowsSystem32, change PATH, or replace a newer file globally. Windows follows a defined DLL search order, and uncontrolled copies can create version conflicts or DLL-preloading risks. Manual copying is appropriate only for a documented app-local deployment using the application’s trusted package.
7. Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. sqlserverspatial110.dll is a native spatial implementation, not a COM control that should be registered.
Running:
regsvr32 sqlserverspatial110.dll
will not install the SQL spatial runtime and may produce a misleading registration error. Repair the application or install the matching SQLSysClrTypes.msi package instead. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s intended registration role.
8. Repair Windows components only as a fallback
Because this is a SQL Server component rather than a protected Windows file, SFC normally cannot recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when multiple unrelated applications are also failing or Windows component corruption is suspected.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for completion.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft provides SFC and DISM repair guidance. If these commands report repairs but the SQL DLL error remains, return to the application repair and SQL CLR Types steps.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows configuration and component problems, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.

A graphics or chipset driver is not a normal source of sqlserverspatial110.dll errors. Consider driver maintenance only if the application also reports graphics, hardware, or device initialization failures.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest.
For a manufacturer driver, use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact versions, while the full version performs the installation; it is optional and does not replace the SQL runtime or the application’s own repair.

If the error began immediately after removing an old SQL component or installing an update, System Restore may help when a restore point exists.
Rank #4
- Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restore and test the application.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling an application, and it may not restore app-local deployment files. If it does not help, reinstall the affected program and its required SQL component.
Safe sources and prevention
Never download sqlserverspatial110.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to a different SQL Server generation, use the wrong architecture, or omit another dependency. It may also conceal the real problem: a missing application package or incompatible managed assembly.
Use one of these controlled sources instead:
- The application developer’s official installer or repair package
- Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 SP4 Feature Pack
- The application’s documented
Microsoft.SqlServer.Typespackage deployment
SQL Server 2012 reached the end of extended support on July 13, 2022, according to Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 lifecycle page. New applications should not be made dependent on that generation unless the vendor specifically requires it.
If the error still remains
Collect this information before contacting the application vendor or administrator:
- The exact error text and full inner exception
- Application name and version

Remember that “module could not be found” can mean a dependency of sqlserverspatial110.dll is absent, not necessarily that the named file itself is missing.
FAQ
Is sqlserverspatial110.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Microsoft SQL Server spatial runtime component, generally installed by SQL Server, its Feature Pack, or an application that bundles SQL spatial types.
Do I need to install the full SQL Server database engine?
Usually not. The Microsoft System CLR Types package can be installed separately when the application needs spatial functionality but the database engine is not installed.
Should I install x86 or x64?
Match the application process, not merely the Windows edition. A 32-bit application needs the x86 component on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.
Can I register the file with regsvr32?
No. Registration is not the repair method for this native spatial library.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependent library may be missing, the process may have loaded the wrong architecture, or the managed and native SQL spatial versions may be incompatible.
Can SFC restore the file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while sqlserverspatial110.dll belongs to a SQL Server runtime or application deployment. Repair that package directly.
