If you want to play now, start with Star Citizen. Its live Alpha is available to players with an RSI Account, a Star Citizen Game Package, and a computer that meets the requirements. Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign, but Roberts Space Industries (RSI) says it remains in development and is not available to download.
Which should I play first, Squadron 42 or Star Citizen?
For a newcomer choosing what to play today, Star Citizen is the only available option of the two. That recommendation is about current access—not a promise that it is finished or the right style of game for every player.

RSI describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. Its support article, updated February 4, 2026, says: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” RSI’s April 16, 2026 setup checklist likewise says the campaign is still in development and not yet available. Neither source establishes a release date.

What should I expect if I start with Star Citizen?
It is an Alpha, not a finished release
RSI says Star Citizen remains in Alpha, and features in both games are still in design, development, and testing. Expect ongoing changes rather than treating access to the live environment as a guarantee of a complete, final experience.
The PTU is for testing, not an alternative campaign
The Public Test Universe (PTU) is a controlled environment for trying unreleased Star Citizen patches before they reach the live service. RSI opens access in waves, so it is not always available to every player. PTU builds can be incomplete, need revisions, or require further testing. The PTU is not a way to play Squadron 42.

Do I need to buy Star Citizen to play?
RSI says you need an RSI Account and a Star Citizen Game Package to access Star Citizen. The package is the relevant purchase for someone who wants to play now; an account alone is not enough. RSI says packages generally include the game and at least one ship, except for the Squadron 42 standalone pledge. Package contents can differ, so check the current listing before buying rather than assuming every pledge includes the same items.

What if I own a Squadron 42 pledge?
Owning a pledge that contains Squadron 42 does not make the campaign downloadable before release. RSI says owners can download it after development, testing, and release. Since RSI’s cited support guidance does not give a release date, a pledge should not be treated as access to a campaign you can play now.
