No: Squadron 42 is no longer targeting 2026. In August 2026, Chris Roberts moved the planned release window to Q2 2027, according to PC Gamer. That makes the latest target about 12 years after the original 2015 goal—not 11. The 11-year comparison describes the gap between the original goal and the 2026 target announced at CitizenCon 2024.
What is Squadron 42’s current release target?
Q2 2027 is the latest reported target, not a confirmed release date. PC Gamer reported in August 2026 that Roberts said the plan had been to release in Q4 2026, around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE), but the target was moved to Q2 2027. He said the decision was intended to avoid “the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.” This is Roberts’s stated rationale as reported by PC Gamer, not proof of how either game’s launch will perform.
The schedule has changed since Cloud Imperium Games announced a 2026 target at CitizenCon 2024. That 2026 date is now superseded by the Q2 2027 target.
How the release targets changed
| Announcement | Stated target | Release or download status |
|---|---|---|
| December 2014 | The first chapter was expected “towards the back half of next year”—that is, the second half of 2015, based on the letter’s publication date. RSI’s December 6, 2014 letter | This was a goal, not a release. The letter does not establish that the game was released or downloadable then. |
| CitizenCon 2024 | 2026. The announcement and original-target comparison were reported by Ars Technica. | The 2026 window was a target, not evidence of release. |
| August 2026 | Q2 2027, replacing the prior Q4 2026 plan, according to PC Gamer’s report. | The report establishes a changed target, not a completed release. |
Why the headline says 11 years—and why that is no longer the whole story
The 11-year figure is the difference between the original 2015 goal and the 2026 target announced at CitizenCon 2024. It is date arithmetic, not a published statistic. With the target now Q2 2027, the latest schedule extends roughly 12 years beyond the original 2015 goal.

Roberts had already warned in a November 2016 letter on RSI: “Target dates are not release dates, and everything you see will shift at some point, sometimes slightly and sometimes wildly.” That distinction matters here: each date in the timeline is a development target, not confirmation that the game shipped.
Can you download Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI’s support article, updated February 4, 2026, said Squadron 42 was still in development and unavailable to download. It said qualifying pledge owners would be able to download the game after development was complete, it had been tested, and it had been released. See RSI’s answer to “Where can I download Squadron 42?” for that official status.
