SRS vs OBS for Keeping a Prerecorded YouTube Channel Live

OBS can loop a local video and stream it straight to YouTube. SRS is useful when you need a separate server-side ingest, relay, or protocol-conversion stage—not for basic file looping.

For a simple prerecorded YouTube livestream, use OBS directly. Add the video as a looping Media Source, then stream OBS’s output to YouTube. SRS is a separate streaming-media server: add it only when you need server-side RTMP ingest, relay, or protocol conversion. SRS is not required just to loop a file, and the cited documentation does not establish it as a playlist scheduler or a way to keep OBS running unattended.

What each tool does in this setup

Need OBS direct to YouTube OBS through SRS
Main role Composes scenes, plays local media, encodes the output, and publishes it. Accepts a stream such as RTMP from OBS or FFmpeg, then can relay or convert it.
Looping a local video OBS Media Source has a Loop option to restart a file when playback ends. The cited SRS documentation establishes stream ingest, not a local playlist editor. Loop the source in OBS or use a separately documented playout method.
Moving parts OBS and YouTube’s encoder settings. OBS, an SRS deployment and configuration, and YouTube or another downstream destination.
When it fits A single encoder sending a composed program to YouTube. A workflow that actually needs a separate server-side ingest, relay, or conversion stage.
Archive planning YouTube’s automatic archive may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours; retain a local recording. The same YouTube archive caveat applies. SRS does not remove it.

This is a comparison of documented roles, not a performance test. The documentation cited here does not establish comparative reliability, CPU load, or unattended-restart behavior for a particular deployment. OBS Media Sources · SRS documentation

How to loop a prerecorded video in OBS and send it to YouTube

  1. Add the video. In OBS, create or select a scene, add a Media Source, and choose the local file. OBS supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; supported audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
  2. Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop if playback should restart when the file ends. Add any titles, images, or overlays as other scene sources. OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support.
  3. Get the YouTube connection details. Create or schedule the livestream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the encoder setup and enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  4. Choose the endpoint YouTube provides. YouTube offers RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL. If using RTMPS, get its URL from Live Control Room and use that endpoint with the stream key; do not assume an RTMP URL is interchangeable. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  5. Start and verify before relying on the broadcast. Start OBS ahead of the planned broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor picture and sound. If recording locally as a backup, verify that the recording is being written.
  6. Plan the recording separately from the live stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. Do not depend on YouTube to preserve a continuous or multi-day broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

When putting SRS between OBS and YouTube makes sense

Use SRS when the architecture calls for a server to receive an RTMP publisher and relay or convert the stream. In that arrangement, OBS still produces the composed program and sends it to SRS; SRS provides the server-side stage. If all you need is a local file looping into one YouTube broadcast, the extra server adds deployment and configuration without a documented need in this workflow. The SRS setup documentation describes publishing to SRS from OBS or FFmpeg; it does not establish that SRS by itself chooses, loops, or schedules local video files. SRS getting started

Copyright and channel requirements

  • Clear the rights to every video and audio element before broadcasting, including music. Having a copy of a recording does not by itself establish that you have livestreaming or archival rights.
  • Make sure the live content complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and livestream terms. YouTube’s terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” Read YouTube’s livestream terms.
  • Keep your stream key private, and replace it through YouTube’s controls if it is exposed.
  • Do not assume a livestream archive will be complete, particularly for broadcasts exceeding 12 hours; maintain a local recording if you need a dependable copy.

Common problems and fixes

The video stops instead of restarting

Check the Media Source properties and enable Loop. Confirm that the selected source is the local file you intend to play.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream

Recheck the stream URL and key against the values shown in Live Control Room. If you selected RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides rather than substituting an RTMP endpoint. Keep the key private.

The preview is live, but the archive is missing or incomplete

YouTube’s guidance says broadcasts under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when a complete archive matters.

The broadcast is not suitable to keep running unattended

A looping Media Source only repeats the file while OBS is operating; the cited OBS and SRS documentation does not establish a complete unattended-restart or failover setup. If you require that behavior, evaluate the specific deployment and recovery mechanisms rather than assuming SRS provides them automatically.
