SRS YouTube Streaming Latency: Settings to Reduce Delay

SRS HLS tuning can bring documented latency to about 6–8 seconds, but not below 5 seconds in the described setup. Here’s how to tune and test the full path.

To reduce latency in an SRS HLS stream, shorten the encoder’s GOP/keyframe interval and encoding delay, then lower SRS’s hls_fragment and hls_window. Use a player that supports low-delay HLS and measure the full path. SRS’s current v8 guide estimates about 6–8 seconds after its example adjustments; it says the described HLS setup will not get below 5 seconds. If you need sub-five-second delivery, HLS may not fit the target.

What sets the latency ceiling?

HLS packages video into segments, so viewers cannot receive a continuous feed in the same way as with a non-segmented protocol. YouTube says its Ultra low-latency option is turned off when HLS is selected, because HLS has higher latency than RTMP ingestion. That is a platform ingest constraint, not a promise about the delay every viewer will see: playback settings, player behavior, network conditions and the delivery path also matter. YouTube’s HLS setup guide describes the platform’s requirements.

SRS’s v8 HLS guide says its default 10-second slice and 60-second playlist can result in about 30 seconds of latency, in part because some players begin requesting media from the middle of the playlist. The same guide estimates about 6–8 seconds after its recommended adjustments. These are documentation estimates, not measurements of your server or a guaranteed result. SRS HLS documentation (v8)

Reduce SRS HLS delay step by step

  1. Check the exact SRS version and delivery path

Start with the current documentation for the version you actually run. Confirm that you are configuring HLS delivery, rather than assuming that an RTMP contribution feed to YouTube has the same viewer latency. Write down the encoder, SRS version, HLS settings, playback protocol, player and devices you intend to support.

    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Set a short encoder GOP/keyframe interval

Try a GOP interval of about one second, if your encoder and platform accept it. In OBS, set the keyframe interval to 1 second; with FFmpeg, GOP is expressed as a frame count, so the appropriate value depends on the frame rate. A shorter GOP can help SRS produce usable segments sooner, but check that the stream remains compatible and that quality and encoder load are acceptable.

  3. Reduce encoder delay carefully

SRS’s OBS example uses the baseline profile and the zerolatency tune. Treat these as settings to evaluate, not universal requirements: encoder options differ, and changes can affect image quality, compatibility or CPU use. Test the actual stream rather than assuming the labels produce the same result in every encoder.

  4. Shorten SRS HLS fragments and playlist window

In the SRS configuration, review hls_fragment and hls_window. The v8 guide’s example uses a 2-second fragment and a 10-second window. Smaller values may reduce waiting, but they also leave less room to absorb jitter and can cause buffering, skips or playback failure. Verify configuration syntax and supported values against your deployed SRS version before changing production settings.

  5. Choose a low-delay-capable player

Player buffering strategy can preserve substantial delay even when the server is tuned. SRS names hls.js, ijkplayer and ffplay as examples suited to low-delay playback, and cautions that higher-latency players such as VLC may retain more delay. Confirm behavior on the specific player versions and devices your audience uses.

  6. Measure end to end and change one group at a time

Measure from the source event to playback on a viewer device. Change encoder settings first, measure, then adjust SRS and measure again, followed by player settings. Record the observed delay and conditions alongside the configuration. Ingest, server, network, platform delivery, player buffering and viewer connection all contribute; SRS settings alone cannot guarantee a latency figure.

YouTube HLS ingest requirements

Do not assume an SRS HLS configuration is automatically compatible with YouTube’s HLS ingest. YouTube’s setup guide specifies all of the following for HLS delivery:

Check the complete SRS-to-YouTube workflow against those requirements before treating it as supported. YouTube’s HLS choice also disables its Ultra low-latency option. If instead you send an OBS/RTMP contribution feed to YouTube, SRS documents RTMP as a common publishing and ingest choice; that fact does not establish the latency YouTube viewers will receive. When to consider a different protocol

If your goal is interactive delivery below five seconds, SRS’s documented HLS tuning is not a fit: its v8 guide says the described setup will not reduce HLS delay below 5 seconds. SRS identifies HTTP-FLV, HTTP-TS and WebRTC as options for lower-latency delivery scenarios than HLS. A protocol change does not guarantee a particular delay; verify that the platform, client devices and playback software support the chosen path, then test under realistic network variation. For SRS RTMP and HTTP-FLV low-latency configurations, the project’s v5 guide discusses controls such as min_latency, merged-read behavior, consumer queue waits and GOP cache. These options affect server behavior, but encoder, network and player buffering still need measurement. Because this reference is for v5, validate every option against your installed SRS version rather than copying it into a newer deployment unchanged. SRS low-latency configuration guide (v5)

Common problems and fixes

  • Delay remains high after lowering the fragment duration: Check the encoder GOP, encoder delay, playlist window and player strategy; then measure each part of the path. A short server fragment alone does not control every buffer.
  • Playback stalls or skips: Restore a larger fragment or window, or allow more player buffering. The smaller the buffer, the less protection playback has against network jitter or bandwidth changes.
  • One device is much slower than another: Compare player implementation and version, device behavior and network conditions. A player that buffers more can add delay even when the stream and server are unchanged.
  • YouTube does not accept the HLS feed: Check segment duration and TS format, playlist length, HTTPS POST/PUT use and the no-byte-range requirement. Do not infer compatibility from SRS configuration alone.
  • Settings copied from another SRS release do not work: Confirm option names, defaults and supported values in documentation matching the deployed version. The cited HLS guidance is v8, while the cited RTMP low-latency guide is v5.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube channel rather than tune a live SRS contribution pipeline, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
