The 60-second answer
sspisrv.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its documented description is LSA SSPI RPC interface DLL, and Windows normally loads the native copy from:

What sspisrv.dll does
The file belongs to Windows security authentication infrastructure and is associated with the Local Security Authority process, commonly called LSASS. Microsoft security-update documentation lists sspisrv.dll as a Windows component across multiple Windows architectures and releases.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. A malicious program can use the same name. Microsoft has documented malware that placed a malicious sspisrv.dll in %ProgramData%AuditService beside a copied lsass.exe.
The exact version and size depend on your Windows edition, build and architecture. There is no single current version or file size that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
System32, SysWOW64 and 32-bit programs
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is the native 64-bit system directory.SysWOW64contains the 32-bit system files used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection.
This naming is confusing, but do not use it as a reason to copy files between folders. Windows handles the correct architecture for a 32-bit or 64-bit process. Microsoft documents this redirection behavior.
Why the error appears
The likely causes are:
- Windows component corruption or an interrupted update.
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive.
- Malware using, replacing or hiding a file with the same name.
- Disk or component-store corruption.
- One application having a damaged installation or incompatible dependency.
- A manually supplied DLL with the wrong architecture or Windows build.
The wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean sspisrv.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load another dependency required by it or by the application.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Start with the supported repair source: Windows Update.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test the program.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, note the error and continue with DISM. Do not obtain sspisrv.dll from a third-party download page.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run both tools from an administrator Command Prompt. DISM should come first because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. It can appear paused for a while.
- When DISM finishes, run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it found no integrity violations. If the program now starts, the Windows component was probably damaged or missing.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run DISM again. Then run SFC a second time. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:

Replace the example path with a valid source that matches your Windows release and architecture. An arbitrary source can cause another mismatch.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows builds and interpreting SFC and DISM results becomes the difficult part, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM and SFC remain the supported first-line repair.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined the file after a detection or false positive.
Windows Security
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security → Windows Security on Windows 11, or Update & Security → Windows Security on Windows 10.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an item involving
sspisrv.dll. - Expand the detection and check the original file path.
Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar. Restore it only if:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- the original path was the expected Windows directory;
- the file’s Microsoft digital signature verifies;
- a current security scan does not identify it as malicious.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If the detection points to %ProgramData%, a temporary folder, a game directory or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. For a suspected active infection, disconnect the device from the network where practical and complete malware remediation before attempting repair.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s location and signature
If the file exists, inspect it rather than replacing it.
- Press Win+E to open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
text
%windir%System32
- Find
sspisrv.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer.
- On Details, verify that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Use the Details tab to review the description and version information.
A normal native copy is expected under %windir%System32. A copy in %ProgramData%AuditService, beside an unexpected lsass.exe, in a temporary folder or in an unrelated application directory deserves investigation. Do not delete a suspicious file while Windows is running if doing so could destroy evidence needed for malware analysis. Scan it first and follow your security product’s remediation guidance.
If the file is present and signed but the application still reports it as missing, the missing item may be a dependency. Check the application’s event logs and installation state rather than downloading another copy of the named DLL.

Reinstalling the affected program is appropriate when only that program fails, particularly after an incomplete update or damaged installation. It is not the normal way to repair a Windows system DLL.
- Save your work and close the program.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- If Advanced options includes Repair, try it first.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Install it, then test the program.
If the installer offers a Repair option in Control Panel, use Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, right-click the application and select Repair or Change.
Do not assume that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX or .NET will replace sspisrv.dll. This file is a Windows component, not an identified standalone runtime package. Install an additional runtime only when the application’s official documentation or installer specifically requires it.
Fix 6: Check drivers and recent system changes
A display, storage or security driver can contribute to application startup failures, especially when the problem began immediately after a Windows or driver update.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers and Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver if available, or uninstall and restart only when you understand the device-specific consequences.
Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Avoid replacing a Windows system DLL with a driver package.

Use System Restore when the failure began immediately after a driver, application or system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore.
- Restart and test Windows.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore. System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers and updates.
If Windows will not boot:
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options.
- Choose System Restore.
- If the issue followed an update, use Uninstall Updates where available.
If DISM and SFC continue to report corruption, or Windows cannot start normally, use matching installation media or consider an in-place Windows repair installation. Back up important files first.
Why regsvr32 is not the answer
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. There is no verified reason to register sspisrv.dll, so commands such as these are normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 sspisrv.dll
They can produce another error without repairing the missing component. Use DISM and SFC for Windows files instead.
FAQ
Should I download sspisrv.dll?
No. A downloaded copy may be malicious, unsigned, built for another Windows release, the wrong architecture or missing required dependencies. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, installation media or Windows recovery.
Is sspisrv.dll normally in System32?
Yes. The native Windows copy is normally at %windir%System32sspisrv.dll. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use WOW64 file-system handling and may access the appropriate 32-bit system files through SysWOW64.
Why does an application report the file if Windows owns it?
An application can display the name of a Windows dependency during startup. The file may be damaged, quarantined, inaccessible, incompatible, or present while another dependency is missing.
Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after confirming the original path, Microsoft signature and security status. A file with this name in an unexpected directory is not automatically legitimate.
What if only one game or program fails?
Run DISM and SFC first, then repair or reinstall that application from its official installer. If other applications work normally, the application’s installation or dependency chain becomes more likely.
What if the file is in ProgramData?
Treat it as suspicious, particularly under %ProgramData%AuditService or beside an unexpected copy of lsass.exe. Scan the system and follow malware-remediation steps instead of copying the file into System32.
What is the correct order?
Install Windows updates and restart, run DISM, run SFC, check quarantine and file integrity, then repair the affected application. Escalate to System Restore, matching installation media or Windows recovery if corruption persists.
