There is no single best ship in Star Citizen: the right choice depends on your gameplay loop and whether you fly solo or with a crew. This list ranks ten strong role-specific picks, not ten ships that can be compared on one universal scale. Its recommendations draw on ExpCarry’s editorial tier list for Alpha 4.9.0 LIVE, released July 15, 2026 and updated July 17. RSI had posted Alpha 4.10.1 patch notes and listed Alpha 4.10.2 on PTU when the currentness information was checked, so treat the ranking as a dated snapshot—not a guarantee of present balance, price, or availability.
How this ranking works
The ranking favors how well a ship fits a useful role, whether that role is practical solo or with the crew it expects, and the gameplay it enables. Capacity, cargo handling, survivability, operating effort, flight-ready status, and availability also matter; price is a deciding factor when comparable ships deliver similar results. Because a fighter, miner, salvager, and freighter solve different problems, the positions are editorial choices across roles, not a universal power scale.
ExpCarry’s tier definitions offer a useful way to interpret recommendations: S is a role leader; A is excellent with a meaningful trade-off; B is useful but outperformed by stronger alternatives; and C is niche, compromised, or dependent on unfinished gameplay. A high tier means a ship suits its intended task, not that it is invincible or ideal for every job.
The 10 best Star Citizen ships, ranked by role
| Rank | Ship | Best fit | Crew assumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Avenger Titan | Starter ship and daily missions | Solo |
| 2 | Gladius | Solo PvP fundamentals | Solo |
| 3 | C1 Spirit | Solo light cargo | Solo |
| 4 | Prospector | Solo mining | Solo |
| 5 | Vulture | Full solo salvage loop | Solo |
| 6 | Shiv | Solo PvE with recovered cargo | Solo |
| 7 | Hurricane | Duo combat | Two players |

| 9 | MOTH | Small-group salvage | Small group |
| 10 | C2 Hercules | Large freight | Crewed operation |
1. Avenger Titan — best starter and daily ship
ExpCarry names the Avenger Titan as its low-cost daily-ship pick. It is the most broadly useful entry on this list for a player who wants one recommendation for starting out and handling everyday missions, rather than a ship chosen for a single industrial or combat specialty. The Nomad, Aurora Mk II, Clipper, and Cutlass Black are listed as alternatives, so compare their current roles and availability before committing.
#1 Best Overall
- A Kotobukiya Japanese import
- From the sci-fi game Star Citizen
- PLANET-RING has meticulously recreated the F8C Lightning at 1/100 scale
- Snap-fit construction requires no glue
- Includes a dedicated LED stand
2. Gladius — best for learning solo PvP
The Gladius is ExpCarry’s solo PvP fundamentals choice. That makes it the clearest pick here for someone whose priority is fighter combat, rather than a general-purpose starter or a ship built around cargo or industry. The L-21 Wolf and Arrow are alternatives in the same use case. ExpCarry’s example captures the limits of any cross-role ranking: a Gladius can control a fighter duel that a Hull C should not enter, while the Hull C is designed to move freight.
3. C1 Spirit — best solo light-cargo choice
For solo players focused on light cargo, ExpCarry recommends the C1 Spirit, with the Zeus Mk II CL as an alternative. This is a more targeted recommendation than the Titan: choose it when light cargo is the job you want the ship to do, not because cargo capability makes it a universal winner.
Rank #2
- A Kotobukiya Japanese import
- From the sci-fi game Star Citizen
- PLANET-RING has meticulously recreated the F8C Lightning at 1/100 scale
- Pre-Assembled version completed by skilled professionals
4. Prospector — best solo mining ship
The Prospector is ExpCarry’s solo-mining pick. The Golem is its alternative for the same broad use case. If you are considering mining with other players instead, the recommendation changes to the MOLE or a group of Prospectors.
5. Vulture — best for the full solo salvage loop
ExpCarry selects the Vulture for completing the solo salvage loop, with the Fortune as an alternative. It separately identifies the Salvation as a low-cost solo salvage pick, so the best choice depends on whether your priority is a lower-cost entry or the full solo loop. A small group looking to salvage together has a different recommendation: the MOTH.

Rank #3
- Hasegawa Model Kit
- Accurate Scale Model
- Paints and Glue Required
- Easy to Build
- Detailed Instructions Included
6. Shiv — best for solo PvE with recovered cargo
For solo PvE where recovering cargo is part of the goal, ExpCarry recommends the Shiv; the Constellation Taurus is its alternative. This is a narrower fit than choosing a ship simply for combat: the recovered-cargo part of the job is what distinguishes this recommendation.
7. Hurricane — best for duo combat
The Hurricane is one of ExpCarry’s two duo-combat picks, alongside the Scorpius. The recommendation assumes two players rather than a solo pilot; ExpCarry also lists the Shiv as an alternative. If you are choosing between ships for combat, make the crew assumption explicit before comparing them.
Rank #4
- Die-Cast Metal Space Shuttle with Opening Cargo Doors
- Includes 3 Astronauts
- Authentic NASA Markings
- Enclosed Stickers Let You Name Your Favorite Shuttle
- Remoavble Space Telescope
8. MOLE — best for small-group mining
For a small group that wants to mine together, ExpCarry recommends the MOLE. A group of Prospectors is the alternative. This makes the MOLE a different kind of pick from the solo Prospector: the choice is about how the group intends to operate, not a blanket claim that one ship is better at mining in every circumstance.
9. MOTH — best for small-group salvage
ExpCarry’s small-group salvage pick is the MOTH, with a group of Vultures as the alternative. That distinction matters if you already know you want to salvage with others; the Vulture recommendation above is specifically for the full solo loop. Check current flight-ready and loaner status for the exact ship before planning around it.

10. C2 Hercules — best for a large freight crew
For a crew focused on large freight, ExpCarry recommends the C2 Hercules, with the Railen as its alternative and the Caterpillar also listed as an option. Freight capacity is a different measure of usefulness from fighter performance or solo mission flexibility; a freighter should be judged against the cargo job and crew it is meant to serve.

In-game prices are dated snapshots, and access to the game is separate from choosing a particular ship.
- Access: RSI’s getting-started checklist, updated April 16, 2026, says players need an RSI account and a game package. Except for the Squadron 42 standalone pledge, each package includes at least one ship, the game, and additional items.
- In-game purchase: Ships can also be bought for aUEC at in-game ship shops. Star Citizen Wiki’s Alpha 4.9.0 price table, updated July 17, 2026, lists the Avenger Titan at 1,290,366 aUEC and the Gladius at 2,262,330 aUEC. Those are dated listed prices, not current quotes; the table says its values do not include the permanent 5% Lorville discount. Availability can be always available, time-limited, quantity-limited, promotion-only, or unavailable, and in-game purchases may be affected by wipes during pre-alpha testing.
- Flight-ready and loaner checks: RSI’s Ship Matrix lists stats and loadouts for ships whether or not they are flyable. RSI’s loaner matrix, updated August 26, 2026 for live version 4.10.0, says loaners cover ships not yet available in the Persistent Universe until they become flight-ready. A loaner is not necessarily a one-to-one substitute; RSI updates or removes it when the pledged ship becomes flight-ready. That matrix applies to live servers and may differ on PTU or other test servers.
Before choosing a ship that depends on being flyable now, check its entry in the Ship Matrix, the latest patch notes, and its loaner status. The Alpha 4.9.0 rankings and prices above do not establish what is available in a later live patch.
