Star Citizen Alpha 4.0 reached RSI’s 4.0 Preview channel on December 20, 2024, at 04:55 UTC. It was a live-server Preview built around the Stanton-to-Pyro connection and a large-scale test of Server Meshing—not the finished 1.0 game launch. The release came after Cloud Imperium Games’ announced Q3 2024 target.
When did Star Citizen Alpha 4.0 release?
Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) announced a Q3 2024 target for Alpha 4.0 in its May 15, 2024 Release View roadmap. The roadmap described implementing the first jump point connecting Stanton and Pyro. RSI’s service-status record shows build 4.0.0-live.9470730 deployed to the 4.0 Preview channel at 04:55 UTC on December 20, 2024—after the target quarter had ended. RSI Status and CIG’s original Alpha 4.0: Destination Pyro announcement establish the date and release framing.
That schedule comparison confirms Alpha 4.0 missed its announced Q3 target. It does not, on its own, establish a complete timeline of earlier forecasts or explain every cause of the delay.
What “released” meant: the 4.0 Preview
CIG called the launch the “4.0 Preview” and described it as a release to live servers. The company said the Preview was intended to put Server Meshing and the systems refactored to depend on it through final testing under the high traffic of a live release. That is CIG’s stated purpose, not independent evidence of how well the systems performed after launch.

- 32 ACTION BUTTONS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS - Never take your hands off the controls with 32 programmable buttons spread across both joysticks, each featuring tactile Braille style identification that lets you locate and activate every command by touch alone, keeping your eyes locked on the action while you manage weapons, shields, and flight systems seamlessly.
- FULLY AMBIDEXTROUS DUAL STICK DESIGN - Three detachable ergonomic components on each joystick let you configure this space sim controller for left handed, right handed, or true dual stick operation, giving you the immersive two handed flight control that elite space simulation pilots demand from a combat flight stick setup that adapts perfectly to your grip.
- COMFORT BUILT FOR MARATHON MISSIONS - Wide contoured hand rests cradle your palms while heavy weighted bases anchor each usb flight stick firmly to your desk, eliminating wobble and fatigue during extended gaming sessions so you can navigate asteroid fields and execute precision strafing runs without discomfort slowing you down.
- CUSTOM PROFILES WITH TARGET SOFTWARE - The included T.A.R.G.E.T programming suite lets you load community created mapping profiles or build your own from scratch for any flight simulator joystick scenario, ensuring every button, axis, and response curve is perfectly tailored to each game you play for a truly personalized pc joystick experience.
The distinction matters: Alpha 4.0’s arrival was a significant playable milestone, but it was not Star Citizen’s completed 1.0 launch. CIG’s announcement itself called the long-anticipated work a Preview. RSI’s deployment record confirms when that build reached the Preview channel.
Why Alpha 4.0 was a major milestone
Stanton connected to Pyro
Promoted as “Destination Pyro,” Alpha 4.0 brought the Stanton–Pyro connection into the live Preview. CIG described Pyro as an officially abandoned system with outlaw activity, and the jump point as a means of traveling between systems. The May roadmap had identified the first Stanton–Pyro jump point as a key part of the update.

Server Meshing and refactored systems
The technical focus was Server Meshing, alongside systems refactored to rely on it. CIG said it wanted the traffic of a live release to thoroughly test these systems as they went through their final paces. The announcement explains the intended test conditions; it should not be read as a measured report of stability, performance, or successful outcomes.
How the parallel 3.24.3 and 4.0 Preview builds differed
CIG kept two live tracks during the staged release. Alpha 3.24.3 remained available for missions and game loops still being refactored for 4.0, while the 4.0 Preview exposed the new technical work. CIG explicitly warned that progress made in 3.24.3 would not transfer to 4.0.

| Build | Role described by CIG | Progress continuity |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha 3.24.3 | Retained missions and game loops still being refactored for 4.0 | CIG said progress would not transfer to 4.0 |
| Alpha 4.0 Preview | Live Preview focused on Server Meshing, dependent refactored systems, and the Stanton–Pyro connection | Separate from 3.24.3 progress, according to CIG |
For players choosing between the tracks, the key practical point was that 3.24.3 kept some activities available, but it was not a way to carry that progress into 4.0.

No. The official patch-notes index retrieved for this article listed Alpha 4.10.1 as its newest entry and included 4.0 among the subsequent 4.x releases. That makes Alpha 4.0 a historical release milestone rather than the newest version in that listing. Patch indexes change over time, so consult RSI’s live index for the latest version.
