Star Citizen Alpha 4.2 added radiation exposure as a gameplay hazard and introduced location-specific dynamic rain in Stanton and Pyro. The LIVE release, build 4.2.0-LIVE.9873572, also launched the Storm Breaker activity, added Pyro locations and ship content, and included quality-of-life changes. It is a historical update: RSI’s patch index now lists later releases, including Alpha 4.10.1.
Radiation became a navigable gameplay hazard
Alpha 4.2 added radiation zones and radiation accumulation, resistance, and falloff thresholds to player status effects. The hazard has HUD and visual cues, including REMs, and exposure can cause injury or death if left untreated. Players therefore have to account for both their route and their protection when entering affected areas.
RSI added outfits with high radiation resistance and gave existing armor a baseline amount of resistance. The release notes do not provide a gear-by-gear resistance comparison, so they are not enough to establish a ranked list of the best armor for radiation protection.
The in-game CureLife DeconPen Xtra delivers Canoiodide and Hemozal to treat radiation exposure and improve vitals. It is an item in the game, not a physical retail product.

Dynamic rain arrived at selected locations
RSI described Alpha 4.2’s weather work as “Adding dynamic rain in specific locations around both Stanton and Pyro, as a first step toward Genesis: Dynamic Weather.” The notes list rain and cloud formations, lightning, audio updates, water pooling, and character and clothing texture shaders. They cite Hurston, ArcCorp, Bloom, and other moons and planets as examples of locations for atmospheric experiences.
This was an initial, location-specific implementation—not the full Genesis weather system. The notes describe where atmospheric experiences may occur, but do not establish that every named location receives every listed effect.

Storm Breaker tied new Pyro locations to the Regen Crisis
The persistent sandbox activity Storm Breaker connected gameplay to the Regen Crisis narrative. Its locations included ASD data centers on Pyro 4, shuttle stations on Pyro 1 near storms and radiation zones, and research facilities in Pyro 1’s storms. RSI said shuttle stations offer safer access to disturbances, while freight elevators at research facilities let players move items to shuttle stations.
Other notable additions and changes
- Pyro and trading: New ASD points of interest and Wikelo trade changes.
- Vehicles and equipment: The ARGO ATLS IKTI, GEO IKTI, and IKTI RAD vehicles, the Esperia Prowler Utility, and equipment swapping.
- Characters and combat: Four player hairstyles, new Valakkar fauna, and the Volt “Prism” shotgun.
- Flight and interface: Scanning and targeting UI changes, shield regeneration adjustments, ship balance work, and flight turbulence.
