In May 2025, Star Citizen players objected after new Flight Blades appeared in the real-money pledge store before they could be bought with aUEC, the game’s in-game currency. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) said it would make the components earnable in-game in the next patch planned for June 2025, and set a day-one in-game availability policy for future gameplay kits. That addressed the delay, but not the wider dispute over selling gameplay-affecting items for cash.
What are Flight Blades, and why did players object?
Flight Blades are ship components that alter flight characteristics such as speed and maneuverability. They are not whole ships or pledge ship upgrades. The controversy was about when players could access them: contemporary coverage said the new components were initially available for real money through the pledge store, while their aUEC availability was delayed. Players argued that paying first could provide a gameplay advantage during that window. PC Gamer reported the launch and backlash; PCGamesN covered the components and their effects.
PC Gamer reported that Flight Blade sets initially cost between $9.60 and $42, depending on the set. Those are historical prices reported in May 2025, not current prices. The central concern was the cash-first access period, not simply the existence of a component with a price tag.
Why did critics call it pay-to-win?
The term reflected a player criticism, not a settled finding about Star Citizen. If a component can affect ship performance and buyers can use it before players who rely on aUEC can obtain it, critics may see the purchase as an advantage—particularly while access is unequal. Whether the effects amount to a decisive competitive edge is a separate question.

CIG’s balancing rationale was that Flight Blades involve tradeoffs rather than an across-the-board upgrade. PCGamesN quoted the company’s explanation: “While using flight blades can boost one area, you’ll see a reduction in another to balance things out.” That rationale speaks to how the components are balanced; it does not answer critics’ separate objection to selling gameplay-affecting components for real money.
What did CIG promise to change?
Community director Tyler Witkin, posting as Zyloh, said Flight Blades would be obtainable for aUEC in the next patch planned for June 2025. He described the pledge-store release as the company’s usual early-access approach, then said CIG would handle smaller gameplay components differently. PC Gamer and MMORPG.com reported his response:

“But after some reflection, we’ve decided that for smaller components like flight blades or bomb racks, they should be available in-game at the same time they appear on the store.”
Witkin also said future gameplay kits would be obtainable in-game on day one. He framed the change as a correction amid efforts to release patches more quickly. These were commitments made in May 2025; the reports cited here do not establish the live availability of each item in October 2026.

- Also included are Mystery P; I; The New York Fortune and Mystery P; I; – Stolen in San Francisco
For context, Witkin’s broader pledge-store principle, as quoted by PC Gamer, was: “Throughout Star Citizen’s evolution, one fundamental principle has remained paramount: everything you pledge for to support our development will eventually be attainable through gameplay.”
What the response fixed—and what remained disputed
| Question | Cash-first access | Store and in-game access together |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Players paying real money get access before aUEC access arrives. | CIG’s stated policy for smaller components was availability in-game when they appear in the store. |
| Gameplay impact | Critics argued that earlier access to flight-affecting components could confer an advantage. | CIG said the blades trade gains in one flight characteristic for reductions in another; simultaneous access does not, by itself, resolve debate about the components’ effects. |
| Underlying principle | Critics objected to gameplay-affecting items being sold for cash. | The timing change did not eliminate that objection: players could still disagree with selling such items at all. |
So the response addressed the access gap CIG had created, but it did not settle whether gameplay components belong in a real-money store. Reports published after the announcement described continuing objections. PC Gamer said the announcement thread had almost 2,000 responses at the time of its report; GameSpot later described over 2,000 replies and said most were negative. Those are publication-time counts, not a current total. GameSpot reported on the continuing reaction.

Flight Blades are not pledge ship upgrades
The items in this dispute are ship components that tune flight behavior, not pledge ship upgrades, commonly called CCUs. RSI’s support documentation describes pledge upgrades as changes to the base ship in a pledge and explains which other pledge inclusions carry over. RSI’s pledge ship upgrade FAQ covers that separate system.
What can be concluded now?
The May 2025 dispute is best understood as two related arguments: an immediate objection to cash-only access before aUEC access, and a broader objection to monetizing items that affect gameplay. CIG promised to change the timing for Flight Blades and future small gameplay kits. That response answered the first argument in principle; it did not make the second go away, nor does it establish the current in-game status of the components.
