What do the review scores say?
On October 8, 2026, Metacritic’s all-platform page showed a 68 Metascore from 62 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average,” and a 2.0 user score from 9,489 ratings, labeled “Generally Unfavorable.” These are snapshots, and the user score can change as ratings are added. Metacritic’s all-platform page reports the aggregate figures.
The PC-only critic page showed a 65 Metascore from 28 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, also labeled “Mixed or Average.” That is a separate platform-specific critic aggregate, not an alternative user score or a score for every version. Metacritic’s PC critic page lists that result.

Steam’s listing showed 87% positive from 52,628 English reviews in a search-result snapshot crawled in 2026. This is a dynamic storefront figure rather than a fixed review consensus; it should not be compared as if it were the same measure as Metacritic’s critic score or user score. Steam’s PC listing is the storefront source for that snapshot.
Why was the launch reception so contentious?
Many launch-period reviews criticized randomized Star Card progression and the influence microtransactions could have on gameplay balance. Some reviewers saw progression as unfair or hostile, even while recognizing the game’s spectacle and breadth. A positive 2017 PC review likewise praised it as a shooter with substantial content while noting that loot boxes could feel unfair. These judgments concern the launch-era systems and should not be treated as a description of every later version or the game’s current live state. How did the game change after launch?
EA announced on April 28, 2020, that the game’s vision was complete after more than two years of free content and 25 updates, including The Battle on Scarif. That post-launch run is important context: launch reviews assessed a game whose progression and monetization were under heavy criticism, while later players encountered a substantially expanded content set. EA’s announcement establishes the completed content plan; it does not by itself establish ongoing server health or future support. EA’s April 2020 announcement gives the completion details.
How should you weigh the campaign and multiplayer?
Campaign
The campaign is a discrete single-player component following an Imperial special-forces perspective. It gives the game a story mode independent of online matchmaking, but the broader claims about scale and variety in its reviews largely concern multiplayer.

Multiplayer
Multiplayer is central to the game’s scope, but review scores and the content-update history cannot tell you whether you will find matches quickly now. The authoritative pages cited here do not establish current player population, matchmaking times, cheating prevalence, or server reliability by platform and region. If online play is the main reason you are considering it, seek current platform- and region-specific player reports before buying.
