In Star Wars Outlaws, Kessel Sabacc is a card game of making your blood and sand cards match while managing a limited supply of chips. You can draw to improve your hand or stand to keep it; special cards, Shift Tokens and cheating add uncertainty. The Morenia table in the Wild Card story pack changes several of those rules, so its strategy is different from the base game.

How do you win a hand of Kessel Sabacc?

Your hand has two cards: one blood card and one sand card. The goal is to have the same value on both. A 2 paired with a 2 has a difference of zero and is a Sabacc; a 6 paired with a 5 has a difference of one. Sabacc has many variants, and these instructions describe the version Ubisoft made with Lucasfilm Games for Star Wars Outlaws, not every Star Wars or real-world version. StarWars.com explains the game’s variant.

What can you do on your turn?

In the base-game loop, you have three turns in a round to draw or stand. Drawing costs a chip and replaces the card matching the color you draw. Standing keeps your current hand. Chips also determine how long you can stay in the game: if you cannot pay to draw, you cannot keep drawing, and the last player with chips remaining wins the table. Check the in-game rules menu if a rule or interface detail differs in your version.

Draw when the possible improvement is worth the chip

A draw may move your hand closer to a matching pair, but it spends a chip without guaranteeing a better result. Consider both your current difference and how many chips you can afford to spend over the rest of the game.

Stand to preserve a useful hand

If your opening hand is already strong, standing avoids paying for a draw that could leave you no better off. That also preserves chips for later turns or rounds.

How do special cards and Shift Tokens work?

  • Sylop: It takes the value of your other card, creating a matching pair.
  • Imposter: Its value is decided by a dice roll at the end of the round, so its outcome is uncertain.
  • Shift Tokens: These can change the rules or costs at the table, with effects such as free draws or chip taxes. Their impact depends on the token in play.

Because a Shift Token can help you or impose a cost on an opponent, consider its timing and effect before using it. The game’s design draws on simple draw-or-stand choices, face-up and face-down draws, and wildcard mechanics, according to game director Thibaut Machin. Ubisoft’s game updates and design coverage.

Can Nix help Kay cheat?

Yes. In the base game, Nix can spy on opponents, giving Kay information that may help with a decision. Cheating is not risk-free: opponents can catch Kay doing it. When you cannot or do not want to use Nix, pay attention to discarded cards and opponents’ behavior, but treat those as clues rather than proof of what an opponent holds. PC Gamer’s Sabacc walkthrough covers the practical rules and cheating mechanics; StarWars.com also describes Nix’s role.

What changes at the Morenia table in Wild Card?

The Wild Card story pack’s Morenia casino game is not simply another base-game table. Xbox Wire’s guide, published November 21, 2024, describes six players, no Shift Tokens, and a more crowded table that makes Nix’s usual spying harder. Nix can plant a card in this game, and opponents may cheat too. The game lasts longer, and Kay has eight chips, so spending needs more care. Read Xbox Wire’s Wild Card Sabacc guide.

Machin’s advice for Morenia is to take your time and watch the table dynamics rather than act quickly. The story-pack access requirements stated in Xbox Wire’s November 21, 2024 guide are completing the Gunsmith and The High Roller quests; access requirements may change with later game updates.

How to make better decisions at the table

  1. Assess your pair before drawing. Work out how far apart the blood and sand values are. A close or matching pair may be worth keeping rather than spending a chip.
  2. Budget chips across the game. A draw uses a chip, and running out prevents further draws. Do not treat each turn as an isolated chance to improve your hand.
  3. Use special effects deliberately. A Sylop makes a pair with its counterpart; an Imposter leaves value to chance. Read the active Shift Token’s effect before deciding whether its benefit is worth its cost.
  4. Gather information without overreading it. Use Nix where available, and notice discards and behavior when spying is unavailable. Neither observation nor a suspected tell guarantees knowledge of hidden cards.
  5. At Morenia, slow down. With six players, no Shift Tokens and a different Nix ability, the base-game assumptions do not all apply. Watch how the table is playing and preserve chips for the longer game.

Where to check rules and fixes

The in-game rules menu is the best reference for the table and game version you are currently playing. Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.2 notes include fixes related to Sabacc tutorials, rules menus, Shift Tokens and accessibility. Those notes document fixes in that update; they do not establish how every later version behaves. Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws update notes.
