Star Wars Outlaws makes its strongest case for an open-world Star Wars adventure when it lets you slow down: crossing an alien landscape, lingering in a cantina, or following a small curiosity that is not on the mission-critical route. That is an interpretation, not a universal verdict—but it fits a game built around exploring familiar places from new angles and deciding how to spend your time.
A crime story with room to wander
Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws follows Kay Vess and her companion Nix through an original story. Ubisoft’s official game description places that story alongside bustling cities, cantinas, outdoor speeder travel, syndicate missions, stealth, gadgets, reputation choices, and ship dogfights. The quiet stretches are not a separate mode; they are pauses and detours inside a game that also wants to deliver high-stakes jobs.

That contrast matters. A mission gives you a clear objective and pressure to move. A stretch of travel or an unhurried visit to a settlement can make the setting itself the point. The game’s appeal is especially distinct when you can choose to look around before the next demand arrives.
Why the places matter
In a June 10, 2024 interview with StarWars.com, creative director Julian Gerighty described the attraction of discovering corners of familiar Star Wars locations that the films never had time to show. He called “virtual tourism” one of the open world’s pleasures and emphasized letting players direct their own experience: where to go, whom to work with, and how to earn credits or evade a bounty.

That idea gives ordinary transitions some weight. A city is more than a backdrop between objectives when you can take in its bustle; a cantina can feel like a place to pause rather than a menu with a Star Wars skin. The quieter moments work because they invite attention to the world beyond the plot’s immediate urgency.
Gerighty’s description of what makes Star Wars resonate also connects place to character: “What makes a Star Wars story are all of those things combined. When I was much younger than I am today, what drew me were the locations; amazing, fairly familiar, but with an alien twist. But now it’s mostly the characters, the humanity and the relatability of those characters, and the simple yet emotionally endearing stories that they can tell.”

Nix makes small actions feel personal
The slower rhythm is not only about scenery. Nix gives Kay’s moment-to-moment actions a more intimate texture. In the same interview, Gerighty described using him to distract or attack enemies, enter small spaces, open doors, and activate mechanisms. Those functions can turn a basic obstacle into a little collaboration: Kay assesses the situation, Nix slips into a space she cannot reach, and the pair make progress together.
That companionship helps the quieter stretches feel inhabited rather than empty. It also connects exploration to play: looking around can reveal a route or interaction, while Nix’s abilities give the player a way to act on what they notice.

Quiet does not mean passive
There is a real tradeoff in the game’s design. The same world that supports detours also funnels Kay into stealth encounters, combat, syndicate jobs, and ship piloting. Those systems can interrupt a leisurely pace, and not every player will find the mission rhythm equally smooth.
Platform-specific reviews add useful context rather than a single definitive verdict. TechRadar’s January 2026 review of the Switch 2 Gold Edition notes visual differences from other versions and a 30 fps cap; its reviewer also reported playing nearly 15 hours, which describes that review rather than a typical playthrough. Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review says some stealth issues present at launch had been patched by the time of its review. That is a reviewer’s observation, not confirmation that every platform build has identical fixes.

If a stealth sequence or other activity breaks the mood, the official StarWars.com beginner guide says difficulty and options for lockpicking, slicing, and piloting can be adjusted during play. Tuning those settings is a practical way to keep friction from dominating the experience, without pretending every player will want the same balance.

The game’s quieter side is likely to matter most to players who enjoy inhabiting a setting as much as clearing objectives. If you want uninterrupted action or a tightly paced mission chain, its detours may feel like a delay. If you like to explore, notice details, and let a place set the tempo for a while, those stretches are a meaningful part of what the game offers.

That distinction also applies to the Switch 2 version. TechRadar describes portability and the inclusion of Gold Edition content, alongside the visual and frame-rate tradeoffs it observed. Those are platform-specific considerations; they do not change the underlying appeal of being able to pause, look around, and decide what to do next.
