Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world action-adventure about being a scoundrel, not a Jedi. You play Kay Vess, who takes jobs for criminal syndicates with help from her companion Nix, explores planets, rides a speeder and pilots her ship, the Trailblazer. Its strongest fit is for players who want a Star Wars underworld story and a mix of stealth, blaster combat and exploration; those looking for Force powers or a lightsaber-focused game should look elsewhere.
What kind of Star Wars game is Outlaws?
Ubisoft describes Star Wars Outlaws as its first open-world Star Wars game. The story takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, following Kay Vess as she pursues freedom and a new life in the criminal underworld. Nix accompanies her on the journey. Ubisoft’s game page frames the premise around taking syndicate jobs and becoming one of the galaxy’s most wanted.

This is a scoundrel’s adventure rather than a Jedi power fantasy. The official StarWars.com announcement describes Kay crossing the humid jungles of Akiva and the windswept savannahs of Toshara, then taking the controls of the Trailblazer. The appeal is moving through recognizable Star Wars places and factions as an outlaw with a blaster, a speeder and a ship—not wielding the Force.

Outlaws combines planetary exploration with missions for criminal groups, stealth, blaster encounters, speeder travel and space dogfights. Kay can use gadgets, sneak past enemies or fight; the StarWars.com announcement also describes waiting for an opening to distract enemies. Nix is part of the adventure and helps Kay solve problems.

Reputation gives the syndicate missions a broader context: choices can affect Kay’s standing with different groups. Ubisoft’s November 2024 Steam and update article names the Hutt Cartel, Crimson Dawn, Pyke Syndicate and Ashiga Clan. That list establishes the factions featured in the article; it does not mean every mission uses the reputation system in the same way.
The mix is well suited to players who like switching between exploration and approaches to an encounter. It is less suited to anyone expecting every activity to feel radically different from familiar open-world action-adventure conventions. A January 2026 hands-on review by TechRadar’s Dashiell Wood likewise describes the game as using recognizable Ubisoft-style structure rather than reinventing it.

What changed after launch?
Ubisoft’s post-launch updates document specific changes to how Kay can approach combat and travel. They show that the game changed after release, but do not establish that every launch-era concern was resolved.
- Title Update 1.4.0, November 21, 2024: Ubisoft said it expanded stealth and combat choices, including letting Kay use stealth or draw her blaster in syndicate territories in cities. It also added enemy weak points that reward strategic targeting. Ubisoft’s update notes describe the changes; they do not say stealth is optional in every mission.
- Title Update 1.6, May 15, 2025: Ubisoft said the update was deployed across platforms and highlighted the ability to fire Kay’s blaster while riding her speeder. The update announcement establishes that feature, not a comprehensive account of each platform’s latest build.
Ubisoft’s game page also displays a later Switch 2 update headline, Title Update 3 dated October 21, 2025. That does not establish the latest build number for every platform.

Which platform and edition should you choose?
Choose based on where you want to play and what the specific store listing bundles. Switch 2 is the portable option discussed in the available hands-on review; its performance observations should not be treated as a comparison with PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

How does the Switch 2 version perform?
TechRadar gaming editor Dashiell Wood reviewed the Switch 2 Gold Edition in January 2026, reporting nearly 15 hours of play, mainly handheld with some docked time and comparisons against PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. He reported that the Switch 2 version generally held its 30 fps target, with occasional stutters during particularly intense scenes. He found the handheld presentation stronger than docked, while noting blurry fine details and visual compromises. These are one reviewer’s observations of that version, not a universal benchmark or evidence about performance on other platforms. Read TechRadar’s review.

For Switch 2, the choice is therefore partly about where you expect to play: Wood’s review favors handheld presentation, while docked play showed more visible compromises. The cited review does not provide a representative cross-platform technical comparison.

Outlaws is a strong match if you want to explore the Star Wars underworld as an outlaw, take syndicate jobs, and alternate between stealth, blaster combat, speeder rides and spaceflight. Its identity comes from Kay and Nix’s scoundrel adventure and the setting’s factions and locations—not from Jedi abilities.

Think twice if your main interest is a Force-centered story, or if you are tired of familiar open-world structures. The post-launch notes document added options, but they are not proof that the game’s broader mission design will suit every player. Current price and stock are not established here, so compare the live listings for your platform before buying.
