Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- Which program or game shows the error
- When it appears, such as during startup, disc burning, updating, or opening a project
- Whether the message says missing, not found, specified module could not be found, or entry point not found
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem started after an update, uninstall, restore, cleanup, or antivirus alert
starburn.dll is not a Windows system file. It is a third-party burning and mastering library from StarBurn Software, also associated with Rocket Division Software. Programs can ship their own copy, including applications that use the StarBurn SDK. CDBurnerXP, for example, documents StarBurn components among its third-party files.
The safest first fix is to repair or reinstall the specific application named in the error. Do not download an arbitrary copy of starburn.dll into System32 or SysWOW64.

What the error wording tells you
Different messages point to different failures:
| Message | Most likely meaning |
|---|---|
| “starburn.dll is missing from your computer” | The parent application does not have the DLL where it expects it |
| “starburn.dll was not found” | The file is missing, blocked, or the application is searching the wrong location |
| “The specified module could not be found” | starburn.dll may exist, but another dependency may be missing |
| “Entry point not found” | The DLL is present but is the wrong release or incompatible with the application |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | The file may be damaged, blocked, or the wrong architecture |
StarBurnX.dll, mscoree.dll, or error 0xc0000135 |
The issue may involve StarBurnX, ActiveX, or a required .NET component rather than the core DLL |
The exact wording matters. A reinstall is usually the right starting point, but replacing one file does not repair an incompatible set of application files.

Use Windows repair first
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Repair normally preserves the application and its settings while restoring missing or damaged files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.

Some desktop programs do not provide Windows’ Repair button. In that case:
- Open the program’s own settings or maintenance utility.
- Look for Repair, Change, Modify, or Repair installation.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Reinstall from the publisher
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up any application data you need.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher’s official website or use its original installer media.
- Install the same application again.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Open the application and repeat the action that produced the error.
Use the official StarBurn download page only when you are actually installing StarBurn software or an SDK supplied for development. It does not establish that a standalone DLL from that package matches every application that uses StarBurn technology. The parent application’s installer is the authoritative source for its copy.
If the application is discontinued, forcing an old binary to run may not be practical on current Windows. A maintained replacement may be safer than repeatedly copying files into Windows folders.

Open the game launcher and look for one of these commands:
- Verify files
- Verify integrity
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Validate installation
Run that command before reinstalling the entire game. It can restore the application’s own missing DLLs while keeping the rest of the installation intact.
A successful repair usually means the program opens without the same error. If a new message names StarBurnX.dll, WnASPI32.dll, sptdintf.dll, or another file, treat that as evidence that the application has a broader missing-component problem. Repair the complete application again rather than downloading only the newly named file.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software may quarantine a DLL or block an application folder. Check this before reinstalling repeatedly.
Windows Security steps
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the affected application or
starburn.dll. - Open a matching entry and inspect its file path and action.
If the file belongs to a known application installation, update or reinstall that application from its publisher. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error.
If Windows Security or another antivirus identifies the file as malicious:
- Leave it quarantined.
- Do not add an exclusion just to make the program start.
- Remove the affected application if you do not trust its installer.
- Obtain a fresh installer from the publisher.
The name starburn.dll alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe or unsafe. A legitimate library can be abused inside a malicious program, and a damaged or modified file can have the same name as a genuine application component.
After reinstalling, check the file’s location. An application-local copy beside the program’s executable is expected. A random copy placed in a Windows system directory is not proof that the problem is fixed.

Fix 3: Confirm the application and DLL architecture match
StarBurn SDK documentation describes separate i386 and amd64 builds. In practical terms, a 32-bit application generally needs the 32-bit StarBurn files, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit set.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit programs. Therefore, do not install a 64-bit DLL simply because your computer runs 64-bit Windows.
Check the application architecture
Windows does not always display this clearly in its standard properties. You can use the application publisher’s documentation, installation folder, or support information. The application’s installer is usually the safest way to obtain the matching files.
If you use Task Manager:
- Start the affected program.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Locate the program’s executable.
- On some Windows configurations, a 32-bit program is marked with (32 bit).
Do not mix files from different StarBurn-based applications. Separate programs may ship different StarBurn generations or supporting components. A mismatched copy can change a missing-file error into an entry point not found error.
The correct remedy is to reinstall the complete application package for the application that failed.
Fix 4: Distinguish a missing dependency from a missing DLL
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that starburn.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found it but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Depending on the application, related components may include:
StarBurnX.dllWnASPI32.dllsptdintf.dll- Optional audio or device-support libraries
- Microsoft runtime components required by the application
The safest response is still a full repair or reinstall. Do not download every DLL named by a dependency tool from unrelated sources.

Advanced users can inspect the executable and its dependency chain with a reputable dependency-analysis utility. Look for a missing dependency, architecture mismatch, or loading failure. Treat the result as diagnostic information, not as a list of files to download individually.
If the application was moved manually to another drive, restore it through its installer. Moving only the executable folder can leave registry entries, services, drivers, or supporting libraries behind.
Fix 5: Handle StarBurnX and ActiveX errors separately
StarBurn.dll and StarBurnX.dll are not interchangeable.

The core StarBurn DLL is a runtime library. StarBurnX is a separate component that may use ActiveX or COM registration. If the error specifically names StarBurnX.dll, use the original application installer or the vendor-supplied installation script.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 starburn.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs designed to register themselves, commonly COM or ActiveX libraries. It is not a general repair command for ordinary runtime DLLs. Running it against the wrong file can produce a registration error without repairing the application.
If the installer includes a script such as StarBurnX-Install.bat:
- Confirm that it came with the application or SDK.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the script.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For StarBurnX samples that report 0xc0000135 or mention mscoree.dll, investigate the .NET Framework required by that historical sample. Do not assume that every starburn.dll error requires .NET.
Fix 6: Check the optical drive and related drivers
Some programs use StarBurn to communicate with CD, DVD, or Blu-ray hardware. If the DLL repair succeeds but the application still cannot detect a drive, inspect Device Manager.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the affected optical drive.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Also expand Universal Serial Bus controllers if the drive is external. Check for a warning icon. Disconnect and reconnect an external drive, try another USB port, and confirm that the drive appears in File Explorer.
Do not remove a working device driver solely because starburn.dll is missing. Driver work is relevant when the application starts but cannot access the hardware, not as the normal first fix for a missing application DLL.
Updating drivers manually means identifying the exact hardware, Windows edition, and suitable package, then repeating the process for each affected device. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns starburn.dll.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Because starburn.dll is normally an application file, System File Checker will not usually restore it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated programs are failing or Windows itself appears damaged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They do not guarantee restoration of a third-party starburn.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but the affected application’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix for its own DLL.

That approach can fail because:
- The downloaded file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong release.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may not export the functions your application expects.
- The application may load a private copy from its own folder.
- It does not restore related dependencies, registry entries, services, or configuration.
Use the publisher’s complete installer, the application’s repair function, or its launcher verification command. The file belongs to the program that installed it, not to Windows.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Record these details before contacting the application publisher:
- The exact error text.
- The executable name shown in the message.
- The application’s installation folder.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether antivirus quarantined a file.
- Whether the DLL exists beside the executable.
- Any related names, such as
StarBurnX.dll,WnASPI32.dll, ormscoree.dll. - Whether the failure occurs for every user account or only one.
- Whether the application was recently updated, restored, or moved.
This information distinguishes a missing file from a wrong build, missing dependency, blocked file, or incompatible legacy application.
FAQ
Is starburn.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party StarBurn library normally supplied by an application or SDK.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I put it in System32?
No. Install or repair the application that requested it. The correct DLL is usually deployed beside that application.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
There is no universal evidence that it will. Install a runtime only when the application publisher specifically requires it or the error identifies that dependency.
Do I need a 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
Not necessarily. A 32-bit application normally needs its 32-bit StarBurn files even on 64-bit Windows.
Should I register starburn.dll with regsvr32?
No, not unless the application documentation specifically identifies that file as a self-registering component. StarBurnX and the core DLL are different components.

Check quarantine, confirm the installer restored the matching architecture, inspect related dependencies, and determine whether the application is obsolete or loading a different copy from another location.
Can System File Checker restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while starburn.dll is normally an application-owned file. Repair the parent application first.
