Blizzard made the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty single-player campaign free on November 14, 2017, as part of a broader free-to-play offering. Blizzard’s announcement also described free unranked multiplayer, a way to unlock ranked play, and limits on most co-op commanders. Those details document the launch-era offer; they do not confirm that every rule or installation step is unchanged today.
What was included in Blizzard’s free-to-play offer
Blizzard’s November 2017 announcement included the original Wings of Liberty campaign and access to multiplayer and co-op content under specific conditions. Its separate 4.0 patch notes likewise said the campaign and unranked ladder were free. These are historical terms, not a current confirmation of every feature’s availability.

How to get started
Blizzard’s historical Starter Edition page says players needed a Battle.net account and an internet connection; new users could sign up, while existing account holders could download the game client. Because that page covers the older Starter Edition, it is not a verified guide to the current download flow.
- Use or create a Battle.net account. This is part of Blizzard’s historical Starter Edition guidance. Blizzard’s StarCraft II page
- Check Blizzard’s current StarCraft II page for the available client and download instructions. The historical sources do not establish today’s exact download location or installation steps.
- Check current platform support and system requirements before installing. The cited historical instructions do not establish current requirements.
What may cost extra
At the time of the announcement, Blizzard described Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops as other campaigns available for purchase. It also mentioned premium digital items such as announcer packs, skins, and additional co-op commanders. That 2017 description does not establish current prices or availability; check Blizzard’s current game listing for those details.

What the historical offer does—and doesn’t—tell you
The central answer is clear: Blizzard announced the original Wings of Liberty campaign as free in 2017. Its announcement and patch notes also document the multiplayer and co-op terms at launch. They do not verify whether the ranked unlock conditions, co-op limits, platform availability, installation flow, system requirements, or optional purchases remain the same in 2026.
