Stardew Valley: Why Ginger Island Makes a Fitting 10th Anniversary Celebration

Ginger Island is not a new 10th-anniversary expansion, but its wide-ranging late-game content makes it a fitting Stardew Valley milestone to revisit.

Ginger Island is not a new anniversary expansion, and the official 10th-anniversary announcement does not call anything “Ginger Island Redux.” The case for celebrating it is retrospective: the free 1.5 update added a broad late-game destination that still gives Stardew Valley players new places to explore, goals to pursue, and stories to uncover.

What did Stardew Valley do for its 10th anniversary?

On February 26, 2026, creator Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe, marked ten years since Stardew Valley launched with a retrospective video featuring very early development footage. He also said another update was in development, but gave no release date or feature list. The post therefore celebrated the game’s history; it did not announce a Ginger Island overhaul.

Barone wrote, “It’s sold 50 million copies with no sign of slowing down.” That figure is the one reported in the February 26 anniversary post, rather than a separately dated current sales total. He also offered a succinct statement of the game’s spirit: “But hey, at the end of the day, games are supposed to be FUN.” Read the official 10-year anniversary post.

What is Ginger Island in Stardew Valley?

Ginger Island is a new region in the Fern Islands, introduced in Stardew Valley’s 1.5 update. It extends the game beyond the familiar valley with a mix of exploration, puzzles, quests, characters, combat challenges, and farming. Rather than functioning as one self-contained story chapter, the island offers several different ways to spend time there.

The island farm supports year-round farming, but the official changelog says buildings cannot be constructed there. The full 1.5 changelog details the island’s additions.

Is Ginger Island part of the 1.5 update?

Yes. Ginger Island is official game content from version 1.5, not a separate paid expansion. ConcernedApe described 1.5 as a major free update with substantial late-game content. It launched on PC on December 21, 2020, with console releases following in February 2021. The announcement’s original note that mobile would follow later was a statement about the rollout at that time, not a guide to current platform availability.

ConcernedApe’s 1.5 release announcement provides the launch framing and historical release dates. Players looking to experience Ginger Island need Stardew Valley on a platform they can play; the island itself was included in the free update.

Why Ginger Island makes a fitting anniversary celebration

Calling Ginger Island the “perfect” celebration is an opinion, not an official description. The argument is that the island captures what makes Stardew Valley compelling: it broadens a familiar world without reducing the experience to one new activity. A player can follow character stories, solve puzzles, take on dungeon challenges, pursue Qi’s goals, or make use of a farm in any season.

Stardew Valley - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life.
  • Now with Multiplayer! Invite 1-3 players to join you in the valley! Players can work together to build a thriving farm, share resources, and build relationships with townspeople or each other.
  • New Single Player Content! Including the new Winter Market Festival, more collectibles, added character cut-scenes and even hats for your horse!

That breadth also makes the island an apt subject for a tenth-anniversary look back. It represents a substantial addition to the game’s late-game possibilities, while the anniversary post itself looks back at development and confirms only that another update is in the works. The two are connected as milestones in the game’s history, not as an announced new release.

Is Ginger Island Extra Locations – Redux an official update?

No. “Ginger Island Extra Locations – Redux” is the name of a separate community mod listed on Nexus Mods, created by mistyspring. The listing identifies version 1.5.1, updated March 1, 2026, and tags it for Stardew Valley 1.6, SMAPI, and Content Patcher. It is not an official ConcernedApe update, and its existence does not indicate that the anniversary announcement concerned a Ginger Island revision.
