Meadowlands is the best pick for an animal-focused start, while Standard is the strongest all-purpose choice and the clearest option for growing crops at scale. The other six farms trade crop space or convenience for features such as renewable hardwood, fishing, mining resources, divided zones, or nighttime combat. This ranking weighs early advantages, flexibility, and friction; it is an editorial recommendation, not an official or statistically measured verdict.

You choose one of the eight farm maps when creating a character, and that choice cannot be changed for that character. Use the ranking and comparison below to match the map to the way you want to play.

All eight Stardew Valley farms compared

The tillable-area figures below are the values listed in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s farm-map descriptions. They describe crop space, not the full value of a map’s resources or layout. Counts are not stated there for Meadowlands or Wilderness; the Beach figure is labeled approximate.

Rank and farm Tillable tiles Best suited to Main trade-off
1. Meadowlands Not stated (Stardew Valley Wiki) Animal-focused early game Its main advantage is the animal start rather than a cited crop-area figure.
2. Standard 3,427 (Stardew Valley Wiki) Crop scale and flexible planning No distinctive map-specific starting perk in this comparison.
3. Forest 1,413 (Stardew Valley Wiki) Foraging and renewable hardwood Substantially less crop space than Standard.
4. Four Corners 2,952 (Stardew Valley Wiki) Organized zones and multiplayer Less crop space than Standard.
5. Hill-top 2,131 (Stardew Valley Wiki) Mining resources close to home Cliffs and a stream reduce usable farming room.
6. Beach About 2,066 (Stardew Valley Wiki; approximate) Fishing, foraging, and shoreline atmosphere Sprinklers do not work on sandy soil.
7. Riverland 1,578 (Stardew Valley Wiki) Fishing and a water-heavy layout Water occupies substantial space.
8. Wilderness Not stated (Stardew Valley Wiki) Nighttime combat on the farm Monsters add friction to routine farm work.

1. Meadowlands: best for an animal-forward start

Meadowlands begins with a coop and two chickens, giving animal-minded players a useful head start. Its special blue grass is described as good animal food, and the map still offers varied terrain. That combination makes it the strongest recommendation for a new player who is more excited by raising animals than laying out large crop fields.

2. Standard: best all-purpose and crop-focused farm

Standard has the most tillable land among the maps with a figure listed in the wiki comparison: 3,427 tiles. Its open, straightforward layout makes it a natural fit for players who want crop scale, uncomplicated planning, or room for a broad mix of fields and buildings. Its strength is flexibility rather than a special map perk.

3. Forest: best for forage and renewable hardwood

Forest offers seasonal forage spawns and renewable large stumps, giving it useful resources beyond crops. The listed 1,413 tillable tiles are far fewer than Standard’s, so this map suits players who value its resources and atmosphere more than maximum crop acreage.

4. Four Corners: best for organization and multiplayer

Four Corners divides the farm into distinct areas that evoke forest, standard, pond, and mining-themed terrain. That layout is useful for groups or solo players who like to give separate zones different jobs. Its 2,952 listed tillable tiles leave less room for crops than Standard, but the divided design offers a clear way to organize a shared farm.

5. Hill-top: best for an integrated mining area

A special area in the southwest spawns stones, ore nodes, and geode nodes according to Mining level. That puts mining-related resources on the farm, but cliffs and a stream break up the terrain and reduce farming space. Hill-top is a good fit if that resource loop appeals more than an open field for crops.

  • You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life.
  • Now with Multiplayer! Invite 1-3 players to join you in the valley! Players can work together to build a thriving farm, share resources, and build relationships with townspeople or each other.
  • New Single Player Content! Including the new Winter Market Festival, more collectibles, added character cut-scenes and even hats for your horse!

6. Beach: best for shoreline play, fishing, and foraging

Beach provides shoreline atmosphere, fishing opportunities, beach forage, and supply crates that can wash ashore. Its central limitation matters if you plan to automate crops: sprinklers do not work on sandy soil. That makes a large sprinkler-based crop operation less convenient, even though the wiki lists about 2,066 tillable tiles.

7. Riverland: best for players who enjoy fishing

Riverland starts with a Fish Smoker and offers fishing opportunities that differ from those on other farms. The water-heavy layout leaves only 1,578 listed tillable tiles, so it is a specialized choice for players who enjoy fishing and the map’s distinctive shape rather than one aimed at maximizing crop space.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

8. Wilderness: best for nighttime combat at home

Monsters spawn on Wilderness at night and scale with Combat level. This makes combat part of the farm experience, but it also adds friction to ordinary routines. Choose it for that distinctive challenge rather than as the safest general-purpose recommendation.

Which farm should you choose?

  • Choose Meadowlands if you want to begin with animals and value its blue grass.
  • Choose Standard if crop acreage, flexible planning, and an uncomplicated layout matter most.
  • Choose Forest if recurring forage and renewable hardwood are worth giving up crop space.
  • Choose Four Corners if separate zones will help organize a multiplayer farm or your own projects.
  • Choose Hill-top if you want mining-related resources to appear on your farm.
  • Choose Beach if shoreline activities appeal more than sprinkler-based crop automation.
  • Choose Riverland if fishing is a central part of the way you want to play.
  • Choose Wilderness if you specifically want nighttime monsters on the farm.

The ranking favors maps with an especially useful start or broad flexibility, but a preference for fishing, mining, foraging, multiplayer organization, or combat can reasonably move a specialized farm higher for you. The tile counts help compare crop space; they do not measure those other benefits. Community polls and forum discussions reflect the preferences of their participants, not a representative measure of what players overall consider best.
