Starfield: 20 Best Planets to Visit, Ranked

Jemison, Akila, Volii Alpha, and Kreet lead this criteria-based guide to Starfield’s most worthwhile named destinations, with clear limits on what a top-20 ranking can prove.

Which planets are the best to visit in Starfield? For story hubs and useful services, Jemison, Akila, and Volii Alpha lead; for discovery and different kinds of adventure, a curated mix of named worlds and destinations offers more than a strict resource ranking. This list weighs quest and faction activity, destination identity, exploration payoff, outpost potential, and travel efficiency. It is an editorial ranking, not an objective score or player consensus.

One caveat matters: the source list behind the familiar “20 best” title includes duplicate biomes and broad categories rather than 20 distinct, comparably documented planets. The ranking below therefore focuses on individually named destinations supported by the available evidence; it does not pretend that every entry has been measured against the same in-game checklist.

How this ranking works

“Best” depends on what a player wants from a landing. A major city can be more valuable for quests, vendors, and faction activity than a remote world with stronger appeal for exploration or outpost planning. The order below gives priority to distinctive destinations and clear visit value, while avoiding unsupported claims that particular planets have the best resources or the most points of interest.

Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 update added cruise mode for travel through open space or to points of interest within a system, a Database for tracking known locations, resources, and recipes, improved outpost inventory access, new dungeons and space encounters, and changes to planetary point-of-interest distribution. These features affect how players navigate and revisit discoveries; older assumptions about travel friction or POI patterns may no longer fit the current game. Bethesda’s April 2026 update notes describe the changes.

The 20 best named planets and destinations in Starfield

  1. Jemison

Jemison earns the top spot because New Atlantis makes it the strongest all-purpose visit. Bethesda describes the city as the United Colonies’ capital, with layered districts, vendors, UC headquarters, and quest leads. It is the best pick here when the goal is to find services and story activity in one place. Bethesda’s major-cities guide details New Atlantis and its facilities.

  2. Akila

Akila combines a visually distinct frontier settlement with faction relevance. Akila City is walled, and Bethesda’s guide identifies it as home to Freestar Collective headquarters, the Freestar Rangers, vendors, and quests. Choose it for a city stop with a different character from New Atlantis, not because the evidence establishes it as a superior resource or exploration planet.

  3. Volii Alpha

Volii Alpha stands out because Neon is built above the water on a former Xenofresh fishing rig. The city brings together Ryujin Industries, vendors, and quest leads, making this a high-value destination for players drawn to its unusual setting and faction activity. Bethesda’s city guide covers Neon’s role and services.

  4. Kreet

Kreet is a strong early exploration-and-combat stop. Bethesda’s 2022 gameplay reveal shows the rocky moon with local wildlife and Crimson Fleet pirates, giving it a clear identity beyond being another landing site. That makes it a useful example of the kind of encounter a planet or moon can offer, rather than proof that it outranks every other wilderness destination. Bethesda’s gameplay reveal provides the documented context.

  5. Porrima II

Porrima II is a destination to consider for Paradiso. A 2023 Dot Esports guide singles it out for the resort, alongside other major stops; that is secondary editorial guidance, not a comparative measure of planet quality. It belongs on a visit list for its named destination, not on an asserted resource leaderboard. Dot Esports’ must-visit guide discusses Paradiso.

  6. Earth

Earth is worth visiting for historical discoveries rather than conventional city services. Dot Esports’ guide highlights its historical interest. Treat this as a destination with a specific theme; the available sources do not establish it as a leading choice for resources, quests, or settlement utility.

  7. Toliman

Toliman appears among the individually named planets in the ranking source, but the evidence provided does not establish a specific superlative for it. It is included as a named destination worth considering, not as a verified top-tier resource world or a documented POI champion.

  8. Gagarin

Gagarin is another named candidate from the source ranking. Its inclusion here is deliberately modest: the available material does not supply a comparable resource profile, quest count, or exploration tally to justify a stronger claim.

  9. Niira

Niira makes the curated list as an individually named destination, but the source material does not provide a substantiated reason to call it best-in-class for any one gameplay system. Consider it when you want to broaden exploration beyond the headline city hubs.

  10. Serpentis

Serpentis is named in the source ranking, but no attached comparative evidence establishes its resource consistency, POI density, or travel efficiency. It remains a candidate for players who want to explore beyond the best-documented destinations on this list.

  11. Porrima III

Porrima III is distinct from Porrima II and appears as its own named entry in the ranking source. The available evidence does not support transferring Paradiso’s appeal from Porrima II to this planet, so its place here reflects a curated inclusion rather than a claim about its specific features.

  12. Narion

Narion is a named system destination in the source ranking, but the evidence does not identify a particular quest hub, resource advantage, or landmark that would justify a more precise recommendation. Use the in-game Database to track known locations and resources as you explore.

  13. Tau Ceti II

Tau Ceti II is included as a named planet, with no substantiated comparative statistic attached to its ranking. It is a reasonable exploration candidate, but the sources do not establish a unique gameplay benefit over other worlds.

  14. Eridani

Eridani appears among the individually named entries, but the supplied evidence does not support a claim that it is especially rich in resources, unusually dense with points of interest, or easier to reach than alternatives.

  15. Masada

Masada is a named destination in the source list. The available information does not substantiate a specific reason to prefer it for quests, services, or outpost building, so its position is best read as a suggestion for further exploration rather than a definitive verdict.

  16. Anderson

Anderson rounds out the named candidates supported by the ranking source. No comparable planet-specific evidence is available here for a stronger claim about its landscape, hazards, or resource value.

    • TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
    • EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
    • CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
    • DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
    • LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
  17. Verne

Verne is another individually named planet from the source ranking. It is included as a destination to investigate, not as a proven leader in any measured category.

  18. Other Sol destinations

Sol’s resource-rich worlds are mentioned as a broad category in the source list, not as a single distinct planet with a substantiated ranking. Because this article is focused on named destinations, it does not turn that category into a fabricated entry or assign it an unsupported resource advantage.

  19. Other Va’ruun-area worlds

“Va’ruun-area worlds” is likewise a regional grouping, not one individually named planet. It may point players toward a theme or area to explore, but the source material does not identify one specific world or establish a comparative ranking for the group.

  20. Other crater and biome destinations

The source list also groups together crater-heavy worlds and duplicate biome entries rather than naming distinct planets. These can be useful search ideas for a particular look or exploration mood, but they cannot be ranked fairly as individual planets without specific names and comparable evidence.

Are moons better than planets?

Not categorically. Kreet, a moon, is a useful documented example of wildlife and pirate encounters, while major planets such as Jemison, Akila, and Volii Alpha offer city-based services and quest activity. The best choice depends on whether you want encounters, settlement access, faction content, or a particular kind of exploration. Todd Howard said in Bethesda’s 2022 gameplay reveal that the game included “over a hundred systems” and “over 1,000 planets” open to visit; that was a statement in the reveal, not a current independent count, and it should not be silently treated as a count of moons.

How to choose where to land

  • For quests and services: Start with Jemison, Akila, or Volii Alpha, whose city functions Bethesda documents.
  • For a distinctive landmark: Consider Neon on Volii Alpha or Paradiso on Porrima II.
  • For an early combat-and-wildlife example: Kreet has direct support in Bethesda’s gameplay reveal.
  • For resource planning: Use the in-game Database to track known resources rather than relying on broad planet-list labels unsupported by comparable data.
  • For exploration efficiency: Use cruise mode for travel in open space or to points of interest within a system, and the Database to revisit known discoveries. Current point-of-interest distribution was adjusted in the April 2026 update.

Why this is a curated ranking, not a definitive top 20

The ranking source names 15 individual destinations: Jemison, Akila, Toliman, Gagarin, Volii, Niira, Serpentis, Porrima III, Narion, Kreet, Tau Ceti II, Eridani, Masada, Anderson, and Verne. It fills out its 20 entries with broad categories or repeated biome concepts, and it does not provide comparable evidence for each planet’s supposed strengths. This list therefore distinguishes well-supported city and encounter destinations from additional named candidates, and does not invent five more planet names or rank generic categories as if they were planets.

There is no directly useful, attributable statistic in the cited material that measures or ranks planet quality. The order is editorial: strong documented destinations come first, and less-supported named candidates follow without fabricated scores or resource claims.
