Starfield: Best Outpost Locations for the Resources You Need

Learn how to choose a Starfield resource outpost, verify surface deposits, and assess Andraphon as an early-game candidate.

There is no universally best resource outpost in Starfield: the right site depends on what you plan to build, and local deposits can vary. Scan candidate planets, then check the landing area for resource overlap before placing your beacon. Andraphon in the Narion system is a useful early-game place to look for iron, aluminum, helium-3, and beryllium—but treat it as a candidate, not a guaranteed four-resource site.

How to choose a resource outpost location

Start with the materials your next build, crafting project, or production chain actually requires. Bethesda’s outpost guidance names aluminum, lead, iron, and nickel as resources worth looking for when selecting a site. A planet’s resource list helps narrow the search, but it does not show that every listed resource will be available together at a particular landing spot.

  • Immediate materials: Prioritize resources needed for construction, crafting, or a planned production chain.
  • Local overlap: Look for a surface area where deposits useful to the same outpost are close enough to serve your plan. Confirm what is present after landing.
  • Network needs: If you intend to move resources through inter-system cargo links, consider helium-3 availability.
  • Convenience: Put the beacon somewhere practical for returning to the landing pad, habs, and extractors.
  • Personal use: A scenic home base and an industrial extraction site do not have to be the same outpost.

Bethesda says planetary resource distributions are procedurally generated to some degree, so maps and named combinations in guides may not match your game. Use planet recommendations to decide where to search, not as promises of a particular deposit or universal coordinates. Bethesda Support’s outpost placement guidance recommends scanning planets and looking for areas where resources are abundant; its procedural-generation explanation describes variation in planetary distributions.

Andraphon: a practical early-game candidate

Andraphon, a moon in the Narion system, is a plausible early search target for players seeking iron, aluminum, helium-3, and beryllium. A 2026 location guide recommends it for that resource combination, but procedural variation means you should verify the deposits in your own game rather than rely on a fixed map or assume all four will overlap at your landing site. Scan the moon, land in a promising region, and inspect the local surface before committing to the outpost.

That makes Andraphon a useful candidate, not a definitive “best” location for every player. If your immediate plans call for different materials, a different planet or moon with those resources in a suitable local arrangement may serve you better.

What to consider before settling on a site

Decision What to check
Materials Does the site have the resources your next construction, crafting, or production goal needs? Bethesda’s examples include aluminum, iron, lead, and nickel.
Deposit arrangement Can you place extractors on useful deposits at this location? Confirm on the surface rather than relying only on the planet-wide list.
Cargo network Will the site feed an inter-system cargo link? Bethesda lists a 5 Helium-3 operating cost for an Inter-System Cargo Link, making helium-3 relevant to network planning.
Access Will the beacon and landing setup make the outpost easy to revisit and use?
Purpose Is this primarily a production site, a home base, or both? Aesthetic and convenience priorities are personal preferences, not a universal ranking.

The 5 Helium-3 figure is an in-game operating cost documented by Bethesda; it is not a resource yield or a claim about how much helium-3 a site will produce. See Bethesda Support’s cargo-link guidance for the link requirement.

How to find and set up the outpost

  1. Choose a goal. List the materials needed for the next build or production chain before choosing a planet.
  2. Scan from space. Scan candidate planets and review their listed resources. Use the list to narrow your options, not to assume every material is available at one landing site.
  3. Inspect the surface. Land in a promising region and check the local deposits for the overlap your plan needs.
  4. Place the beacon thoughtfully. Choose a spot that gives practical access to the outpost and its resources. Bethesda notes that the beacon marks the outpost’s initial boundary, can be moved after placement, and serves as the spawn location when your ship returns to the outpost.
  5. Begin with available extractors. Start by extracting resources present under the outpost, then add transport infrastructure if your network needs it.

Bethesda also notes that an outpost can include a landing pad with a targeted landing place; some pad types allow ship inventory to be transferred directly to outpost storage. Its outpost getting-started guidance describes using extractors to stockpile materials for improving weapons, spacesuits, ships, and outposts.

Why there is no universal best planet

A resource outpost is only “best” relative to its job. One player may need common construction materials, another may be planning an inter-system supply network, and another may value a pleasant place to return to. Because resource distributions vary procedurally to some degree, a named planet or guide map is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Choose based on your priorities, then verify the actual landing zone in your game.
