There is no official, one-size-fits-all best weapon in Starfield. For a scoped burst weapon, the Magsniper is a leading pick; for pistols, the Keelhauler stands out; and the Big Bang is especially useful early. Your build, weapon effects, quality and upgrade state can change which one is best for you.
How to judge the best weapons
This is a role-aware editorial ranking, not an official Bethesda list or a controlled DPS test. The September 2026 ranking from Hack the Minotaur considers obtainable-level damage, firing rate, ammunition efficiency, unique effects or legendary bonuses, and how reliably a weapon can be acquired. Games.gg’s post-Free Lanes weapon guide also cautions that a well-rolled Superior weapon can outperform a poorly rolled Exceptional one.

In practice, compare a weapon with the job you need it to do: range and role, damage and firing rate, ammunition use, skill bonuses, effects, and the effort required to obtain and improve it. Treat rarity and quality labels as context—not as a ranking on their own.
Best Starfield weapons by role
| Weapon | Best fit | Why consider it | What can change its value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magsniper | Scoped, high-burst single shots | Named among the top picks in Hack the Minotaur’s September 2026 ranking. | It suits a deliberate, scoped role rather than every encounter or play style. |
| Keelhauler | Pistol-focused builds | A standout pistol recommendation in the same ranking. | Pistol Certification can materially increase pistol damage, making it a stronger fit for a character invested in that skill. |
| Eternity’s Gate | Players seeking a unique rifle | A strong unique-rifle candidate in the September 2026 ranking. | Its relative place depends on build and configuration; the sources do not establish a universal rank. |
| Big Bang | Early-game shotgun use | Hack the Minotaur describes it as particularly useful early and as a particle-beam shotgun. | Shotgun Certification and Particle Beams can both be relevant to its damage. |
| Magshear | Flexible mid-range use | Games.gg’s June 2026 post-update guide recommends it as a generalist rifle option. | This is an editorial assessment, not an official Bethesda tier placement or a controlled comparison. |
These are category recommendations, not a claim that one gun wins every fight. A pistol specialist may get more from the Keelhauler than a rifle-focused character, while a player who wants a close-range shotgun may have a different priority from someone choosing a scoped weapon.

Why your build changes the ranking
Bethesda publishes skill bonuses, not a game-wide weapon ranking. Its combat skills reference lists the following effects. These are skill-perk values—not comparative weapon test results:
| Skill | Rank 3 effect | Rank 4 effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ballistics | 30% more damage | 30% more range for ballistic weapons |
| Lasers | 30% more damage | 5% chance for laser weapons to set a target on fire |
| Pistol Certification | 50% more damage | Pistol kills grant +25% critical hit chance for five seconds |
| Shotgun Certification | 30% more damage | Shotgun kills can stun additional targets |
| Particle Beams | 30% more damage | +5% critical hit chance |
| Rifle Certification | 30% more damage | 30% faster rifle reloads while standing still |
| Heavy Weapon Certification | 30% more damage | 25% physical resistance while aiming down sights with a heavy weapon |
The Big Bang is a useful example of overlapping synergies: because the cited guide describes it as a particle-beam shotgun, both Shotgun Certification and Particle Beams may matter. The value of either bonus depends on your character’s investment and the weapon’s configuration.

How Free Lanes changed weapon upgrades
Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 Starfield Update 1.16.236 notes introduced weapon and armor crafting support for X-Tech, additional equipment quality tiers, rank-four legendary effects, attribute upgrade modules, and select weapon skins. The update also added broader game features; Bethesda noted, for example, that “The player can now use cruise mode to travel in open space or to POI locations between planets inside a star system.”
For weapons, the relevant change is that a gun’s potential no longer depends only on its base model and existing effects. Bethesda’s Free Lanes overview says X-Tech can reroll legendary weapon effects: players get five rerolls using X-Tech and credits, after which the full modifier list opens for selection. It also says that once an item reaches rank-three legendary, a rank-four effect can be selected using credits and X-Tech.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Keep quality progression separate from rarity labels. Bethesda’s equipment support page lists Basic, Rare, Epic, and Legendary tiers, while Free Lanes separately adds quality tiers and rank-four effects. Games.gg’s post-update guide notes that a well-rolled Superior weapon may outperform a poorly rolled Exceptional one. The label alone is not enough to decide which weapon is better.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing one for your character
- Pick the role first. Decide whether you need scoped burst, a pistol, a unique rifle, an early shotgun, or a mid-range generalist.
- Check your skills. Match the weapon to the combat skills you have invested in; Bethesda’s listed bonuses vary by weapon class.
- Compare the actual configuration. Consider damage, firing rate, ammunition efficiency, range, and useful legendary or X-Tech effects—not just the weapon name or quality label.
- Account for acquisition and progression. A theoretically appealing pick is less useful if it is difficult for you to obtain or improve at your current point in the game.
- Reassess after upgrading. X-Tech rerolls and higher-level effects can change a weapon’s strengths, so an early favorite need not remain your best option.
The available sources do not establish exact controlled DPS comparisons across fully upgraded weapons, all builds, or difficulty settings. Bethesda’s figures describe skill effects; the weapon picks above are attributed editorial recommendations, and current balance, character investment, weapon effects, ammunition, and encounter type can all change your personal choice.
