Starfield players report companions hiding or removing their spacesuits in places where they expected them to stay suited—and sometimes failing to put them back on outside. The reports point to environment-dependent suit behavior, but the available evidence does not establish a universal cause or an official Bethesda fix for this specific companion issue. One mod offers a workaround by synchronizing a follower’s suit behavior with the player’s in certain areas.
Why do Starfield companions take off their spacesuits?
Players have described companions changing outfits around transitions between hazardous outdoor areas and interiors or sealed spaces. One report, for example, describes Sarah removing her suit after entering an airlock. Other players say a companion sometimes does not put a suit back on when the party returns outside.
These are individual player reports, not evidence that the behavior happens to every companion or in every location. The mod listing discussed below suggests that suit visibility can depend on the player’s surroundings and equipment state, but that is an inference from the mod’s design description—not a diagnosis from Bethesda.
What can you check before changing anything?
Record the circumstances when the mismatch occurs. This can help distinguish an expected hide/show transition from a problem that might involve a mod or a particular location.

- Note your platform and game version.
- Record the exact place and transition: for example, a sealed interior, a hazardous planet, or an airlock.
- Check whether an auto-hide setting is active and whether you manually removed your own suit.
- Note any mods that change suit visibility, clothing, or companion appearance.
The sources do not establish several proven fixes to rank, so changing companion clothing or game files should not be treated as a universal solution.
Can a mod make companions keep their suits on?
The Bethesda Creations listing for Smarter Spacesuit Auto-Hide describes a workaround that synchronizes the current follower’s suit behavior with the player in certain areas. According to the listing, a follower unequips a suit in a sealed area only if the player also manually unequips theirs; it also says followers do not equip suits in places where they otherwise would not.

This is not a promise that a companion will wear a suit everywhere. The listing says it modifies existing hide/show conditions without scripts and warns that another mod overriding the same conditions can conflict. Check the listing for current platform availability, version, requirements, and compatibility before installing; load order or other mods may affect the result.
Is this the same as the Tracker’s Alliance bounty-target issue?
No. A separate, community-maintained issue report concerns Tracker’s Alliance bounty targets appearing without suits at civilian outposts on planets without breathable atmospheres, or walking outside Cydonia without suits. The issue author says all 25 affected NPC records have an outfit configuration associated with the missing-suit behavior. That is a specific claim about those NPC records, not a measure of how often companions lose suits.

Bethesda’s latest official patch notes found for this topic are for update 1.16.242, dated May 14, 2026. They list several gameplay fixes, including one for Muria consuming ammo, but do not mention companions removing spacesuits. That means the published notes do not document a fix for this exact issue; it does not prove the behavior remains unfixed in every game build.

Bethesda’s May 15, 2024 notes for update 1.11.36 say: “General improvements for Character fleeing, avoidance and pathfinding.” This describes general character-behavior improvements, not a confirmed spacesuit fix. Read Bethesda’s Starfield update notes for the published details.
How to report a repeatable case
If the behavior persists, a concise report is more useful than a general description such as “companions never wear suits.” Include the companion, location, exact transition, your suit state, platform, game version, and whether you use suit-visibility or appearance mods. If you test without a mod, change one variable at a time so it is clearer what affects the behavior.
