Starfield gives you plenty of control over your character’s face, and Bethesda even patched the eyes on crowd characters in a 2023 update. That is evidence of attention to human appearance—not proof that every face looks realistic, or that the game has definitively solved Bethesda’s history of awkward-looking humans. “Decent-looking” remains a matter of taste, so the fairest answer is a qualified one.
What the evidence actually says about Starfield’s humans
Bethesda’s official materials establish two concrete points: character creation offers a range of face and body options, and update 1.8.86 made a specific improvement to crowd characters’ eyes. Neither source evaluates realism or compares Starfield’s faces with those in earlier Bethesda games. Without a controlled visual comparison, the claim that Starfield’s humans are categorically better remains an aesthetic judgment rather than an established fact.
The patch note is narrow and dated: on November 20, 2023, Bethesda said it had “Improved the appearance of the eyes on crowd characters” in Starfield Update 1.8.86. It does not describe a comprehensive face overhaul, nor does it establish how all named characters, player characters, or faces look in motion.
How much can you customize a face?
Bethesda’s character-creation guide describes choosing a biometric ID as a starting point, then refining features. Listed options include hair and eye color, nose and jaw shape, tattoos, scars, blemishes, and additional facial details. Bethesda cautions that adjusting one slider can affect another, so the controls are not necessarily independent.

You can also select body shape, body type, and walk style. Bethesda says these body options are purely cosmetic and do not affect your character’s strengths, weaknesses, or abilities.
Can you change your character’s appearance later?
Yes. Bethesda Support says you can alter your appearance at an ENHANCE! Genetic Salon in any settlement or city. It points to the salon in New Atlantis’s Commercial District as an easy location to find. The same support page says you can change your character’s name and pronoun there, but not their traits or background: Bethesda’s appearance-change instructions.

What about appearance mods?
Bethesda introduced Creations in June 2024 and described the Creation Kit as a free download on Steam. Its Creations overview says accepted Verified Creators may offer creations for free or set a price and earn royalties. Those details establish an official modding ecosystem, but they do not identify a particular appearance mod or show that any specific add-on is currently available on every platform. Check the in-game Creations catalog for current listings and platform availability before relying on a mod to change faces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, are Starfield’s humans decent-looking?
There is a reasonable case for progress: players have detailed character-creation controls, and Bethesda made a targeted change to crowd-character eyes. But those facts do not settle how convincing the faces look overall. Facial detail, expressions in motion, lighting, and the difference between prominent characters and generated crowds all affect that judgment—and the cited official sources do not compare those elements across games.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
The most accurate verdict is that Starfield gives players meaningful ways to shape a face and received a documented crowd-eye improvement, while the broader “decent-looking humans” claim remains subjective. The game’s customization tools answer what you can change; they do not prove that every human in the settled systems looks good.
