Choose PC if your existing computer meets Bethesda’s published requirements and you want configurable hardware plus the Steam Creation Kit workflow. Choose Xbox Series X|S if you prefer a fixed console setup and Bethesda’s documented display controls fit your television or monitor. Both platforms support Bethesda’s official Creations system, but the available evidence does not establish that Xbox has the entire external PC mod ecosystem or that the two Creations catalogs are identical. Xbox frame-rate targets also depend on your display and are targets rather than guarantees in every scene.
PC or Xbox: the short answer
The best version is determined less by the game itself than by what you already own and how you want to play it.

- Pick PC when your hardware clears Bethesda’s CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system and SSD requirements, and you value upgradeable components, adjustable settings and the Steam Creation Kit.
- Pick Xbox Series X|S when you want a known console configuration, do not want to check component compatibility, and have a display that supports the frame-rate options you intend to use.
- For mods, neither platform is automatically “the full version.” Xbox and PC both have official Creations. PC also has Bethesda’s separate Creation Kit download and broader community distribution methods, while the reviewed official material does not prove that every external PC mod works on console.
- For value, check what you already own. Bethesda lists Standard Edition as included with Xbox Game Pass, while Premium adds the Shattered Space expansion and digital extras. A Premium Upgrade does not include the base game.
Bethesda has not published a same-scene, like-for-like PC-versus-Xbox benchmark in the sources for this comparison. Do not treat either platform as universally faster, sharper or more stable without considering the specific PC, display and settings.
What are the PC requirements for Starfield?
Bethesda’s published specifications, dated August 24, 2023, require an SSD and 125 GB of available storage in both tiers. They are a compatibility baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image-quality preset on every machine. Review the current game build, graphics drivers and Windows updates before buying or troubleshooting.

See Bethesda’s complete specification notice at Bethesda PC specifications. “Recommended” does not mean that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate; it simply describes Bethesda’s higher published hardware tier.
How to check a PC before buying
- Open Windows Settings and confirm that the operating system is supported and fully updated.
- Check the processor and installed memory in Settings or Task Manager, then compare the exact model—not just the family name—with Bethesda’s table.
- Identify the discrete graphics card and compare its model with the minimum or recommended GPU tier.
- Open File Explorer and verify that at least 125 GB is free on a compatible SSD. If the game would be installed on a hard disk, the requirement is not met.
- Update graphics drivers and leave additional free space for updates, saves and other software. Bethesda’s 125 GB figure is the stated available-space requirement, not a guarantee that a drive with exactly that much free space will remain convenient.
If a component falls below the minimum, the official requirements do not establish what performance you will receive. Upgrading may be necessary, but no particular upgrade can be promised to deliver a specific frame rate from these specifications alone.
How Xbox Series X|S display and performance options work
Bethesda’s current support documentation covers Xbox Series X|S display settings. You first choose a priority, then select a frame-rate target that your display allows. The options are designed around trade-offs rather than a universal “quality” or “speed” winner.
| Display setup | Selectable frame-rate targets | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 120 Hz display with VRR | 30, 40, 60 or uncapped | Availability depends on the connected display and setup. |
| Display without a 120 Hz VRR setup | 30 or 60 | Bethesda warns that selecting 60 on a non-VRR display may produce screen tearing. |
The setting is a target, not a claim that every location or combat scene will remain locked to that number. Bethesda says both Visuals and Performance priorities can dynamically adjust internal resolution in heavier scenes.
Visuals priority
Visuals keeps the highest available resolution and preserves the fullest detail for effects, lighting and crowds. It is the choice for players who would rather protect visual detail than pursue the highest target.
Performance priority
Performance lowers internal resolution and reduces those effects, lighting and crowd details to pursue a higher target. Bethesda recommends Performance priority when selecting a target of 60 or above.
VSync and tearing
VSync can be enabled or disabled. Enabling it synchronizes frames to the display and limits frames in the way Bethesda describes; disabling it can allow more frames but may expose tearing. Your television or monitor’s refresh and VRR support therefore matter to the result.

A May 15, 2024 update introduced the expanded choices under an “Xbox Series X Display Settings” heading, and a later November update said the uncapped option was reintroduced for Series X users. PC versus Xbox performance controls
PC gives you a variable hardware platform and, in principle, more ways to tune the experience, but the exact outcome depends on your processor, graphics card, memory, driver version, storage and chosen settings. The official material reviewed here does not provide a complete current PC-settings list or measured PC results.

Xbox avoids a component-by-component compatibility exercise. Its documented controls are easier to understand: choose Visuals or Performance, select an available target, and account for VRR, refresh rate and possible dynamic resolution. That simplicity does not make the target a guaranteed lock, and the sources do not provide a resolution or frame-rate comparison between Series X and Series S.
In practical terms, PC is the better fit for someone willing to diagnose hardware and adjust settings. Xbox is the better fit for someone who wants the game configured around one console family and a known display menu. Neither conclusion supports a universal claim that one platform always looks or runs better.

Does Starfield have mods on Xbox?
Yes. Bethesda’s official Creations system is available from the in-game menu on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Bethesda’s June 2024 update also says the Creation Kit is a separate free download on Steam, allowing PC creators to build and upload content. Community creators can publish through the Creations platform; Bethesda says Verified Creators may charge for creations and earn royalties.
That does not mean Xbox has every mod made for PC. The official sources do not establish complete catalog parity, support for every external PC distribution or installation method, or identical platform availability for each item. Before installing, open the individual Creation’s listing and check its supported platform, requirements and status.
Achievement status matters
Bethesda’s November update says some Verified Creators’ Creations may be achievement-friendly. The practical rule is to check the status shown in the in-game Creations menu or on the official listing before adding content to a save on which achievements matter. Bethesda also says achievements do not unlock retroactively on an earlier save that had Creations installed.
Official references are the June update and Creations overview and the November update. A September 2023 Bethesda statement described built-in mod support as planned across platforms; that historical intention should not be used as proof of a specific current catalog.

PC mod workflow
On PC, you can use official Creations through the same in-game interface as Xbox and separately download the Creation Kit through Steam. PC also supports community modding outside that official system, but the existence of those tools does not make every mod safe, compatible or achievement-friendly. Read each mod’s installation instructions, dependencies and save-game warnings.
Xbox mod workflow
On Xbox, open the Creations menu from the game, inspect the listing and install only content marked for Xbox compatibility. Console users should not assume that a PC mod’s archive, script extender, external installer or manual file replacement can be used on Xbox; the cited Bethesda material does not establish support for those methods.

You already own a gaming PC
Compare the exact CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version and SSD against Bethesda’s table. If it meets the baseline and you want the Steam Creation Kit or broader PC mod workflow, PC is the conditional recommendation. Keep expectations tied to your hardware rather than the word “recommended.”
You want a simple living-room setup
Xbox Series X|S removes the need to select compatible PC parts. Check your display first: a 120 Hz VRR screen enables the broadest documented target choices, while other setups have fewer selections and may show tearing at 60 with VSync behavior as documented by Bethesda.
You mainly care about mods
Identify the specific Creations or tools you intend to use. Both platforms support official Creations, but only PC is documented here with the separate Steam Creation Kit and the wider range of external community workflows. Do not buy on the assumption that an unnamed PC mod will be available on Xbox.
You are deciding on subscription value
If you are considering Xbox Game Pass, Bethesda lists Standard Edition as included. Confirm the current plan, region and entitlement before relying on that listing. Compare the subscription’s ongoing cost with the cost of buying the edition you actually want; no universal price conclusion is possible without your region and date.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating recommended PC hardware as an FPS promise: Bethesda publishes requirements, not a guaranteed result for every scene. Match expectations to your exact components.
- Installing on a hard drive: the published requirement is an SSD with 125 GB available.
- Assuming every Xbox target is available: 40, 60 and uncapped choices depend on a 120 Hz VRR setup; other displays are documented with 30 or 60.
- Expecting a locked target: Bethesda describes dynamic internal-resolution changes in heavier scenes.
- Confusing official Creations with the entire PC mod ecosystem: check the individual item’s platform compatibility, dependencies and achievement status.
- Expecting achievements to appear later: Bethesda says they do not retroactively unlock on prior saves with Creations installed.
- Buying Premium Upgrade as a standalone game: the base game is sold separately.
- Using old update language as a current platform guarantee: verify present options in Bethesda’s current support page, especially because the May 2024 announcement was framed around Series X and later documentation uses Series X|S.
What the official evidence does not establish
There is no cited like-for-like benchmark that measures the same scene on a specified PC and Xbox console. The available material also does not establish exact current PC graphics settings, current street prices, cross-save or cross-buy behavior, mod-storage limits, or complete parity between PC and Xbox Creations. Those answers can vary by storefront, region, account and software version, so verify them in the current official support and store pages before purchase.
Final recommendation
Buy the PC version when your existing machine meets Bethesda’s published baseline and you specifically value adjustable hardware or the Steam Creation Kit. Buy on Xbox Series X|S when a fixed console is more convenient and your display supports the documented options you want. For either platform, choose the edition based on whether you already own the base game, whether Game Pass is currently available to you, and whether Shattered Space and the Premium extras justify the additional cost.
