A designed PDF or mockup is not an airline-issued ticket, a confirmed reservation, a boarding pass, or proof of travel. Put that distinction on the page itself with a prominent label such as SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING.
Use the format for trip planning, a presentation, a training exercise, a design prototype, or a private example. If an airline, consulate, border officer, or other authority asks for evidence of travel, check that authority’s current checklist and provide the genuine document type it accepts.

| Document | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Custom mockup or sample itinerary | A designed representation for planning, comparison, sharing, training, or design work. A sample-itinerary publisher describes these uses in its acceptable-use policy, updated September 6, 2026. | It is not a confirmed booking or valid travel evidence. The same publisher says its samples cannot be used for visa applications, border entry, or airline check-in. |
| Unticketed reservation | A reservation service may place a hold in an airline system and provide a PDF. ValidFlight describes its service this way at validflight.com. | It is not a ticket and does not confer a right to board. ValidFlight says its standard unpaid reservation is released after 48–72 hours; that is the provider’s term, not a universal airline rule. |
| Provider-verifiable itinerary | Onward Itinerary says it issues a booking reference that can be checked through its own QR portal, as explained at onwarditinerary.com/how-it-works (updated September 2026). | Its reference does not appear in the airline’s own Manage Booking or check-in pages, according to that provider. It should not be described as an airline-system booking. |
| Purchased airline ticket | A ticket is issued under a carrier’s fare and booking terms. | Its change, refund, baggage, and validity rules depend on the fare and booking channel. One carrier’s policy cannot be generalized to all tickets. |
Reservation, ticket, and boarding are separate states. A reservation may be held but unticketed; a ticket may be issued but still subject to fare restrictions; a boarding pass is normally generated only after the carrier’s check-in process. A polished layout cannot move a document from one state to another.

Put an unmistakable status label at the top
Add the status warning before choosing colors, fonts, or decorative elements. It should be visible at normal viewing size, not hidden in a footer or pale text. A practical heading is:
SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING
Follow it with a short sentence that explains the intended use: Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created. If you are showing a real reservation that is not ticketed, use a different, accurate statement such as Unticketed reservation — boarding not permitted. Do not call either document a “confirmed ticket.”
The prominent warning is a safety measure derived from the difference between sample documents and genuine reservation records. The acceptable-use policy cited above limits samples to illustrative purposes, while reservation providers describe separate validity and verification conditions. Make the warning part of the design, not an afterthought added after export.
Build the information hierarchy readers expect
Readers scan travel documents for identity, route, timing, and segment order. Use a simple high-contrast page with consistent alignment and distinct blocks. The following fields are a practical design checklist, not a universal airline specification.
Trip heading and status
- Give the document a plain title, such as “Illustrative travel itinerary.”
- Place the mockup warning directly below or beside the title.
- Add the creation date only if it helps explain the example; do not imply that it is an issue date from an airline.
Passenger block
- Use a fictional name for a public example, or redact personal data in a private one.
- If the name is fictional, label it “Fictional passenger” rather than presenting it as someone’s identity.
- Do not include a passport number, date of birth, payment card data, or other identity details unless there is a legitimate, protected reason to show them.
Route and timing block
- Show origin and destination with both city and airport labels, for example “Lisbon (LIS) → London Heathrow (LHR).”
- Give the local departure and arrival dates and times when they are known.
- State the time zone or city context when a route crosses zones; this prevents a technically neat design from communicating an impossible schedule.
- List the airline and flight number only when those details are real and relevant to the illustration. Otherwise write “Fictional carrier” and “Fictional flight” or omit the fields.
Segment cards
Give every flight its own row or card. Include segment number, origin, destination, date, local times, and connection duration when known. Separate connection points visually so a reader cannot mistake a connection airport for the final destination. Keep segments in travel order, not in the order in which you found the information.

Status note
End the core information block with a sentence that states the document’s status. “Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created” is clear for a mockup. If a real provider reservation exists, describe exactly who issued it and whether it is ticketed; never substitute a generic “confirmed” badge.
Step-by-step: create the mockup
- Choose an editor and page size. Use a document or presentation editor that exports to PDF. Select a plain page size suited to the intended screen or print use, such as a standard paper page for printing or a landscape canvas for a presentation. The tool is a design choice, not an airline requirement.
- Insert the status warning first. Add “SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING” at the top in a color and weight that remain legible in grayscale. Lock or group this element if your editor supports it so later styling cannot hide it.
- Create the passenger and trip header. Add the fictional or redacted passenger name, the origin and destination, and the illustrative trip title. Keep labels (“Passenger,” “From,” “To”) visually distinct from values.
- Add one segment row per flight. Enter each route in chronological order. Use a repeated grid for date, departure airport and time, arrival airport and time, carrier, and flight number. Leave a field out rather than filling it with an invented value.
- Show connections clearly. Insert a divider or a small “Connection in …” line between cards. If the connection time is unknown, write “Connection time not stated” instead of estimating it.
- Apply restrained visual styling. Use one display style for headings, one readable body style, generous white space, and thin dividers. High contrast improves scanning on phones and in printed copies. Avoid decorative clutter that makes the warning or route hard to find.
- Check internal consistency. Compare every airport code with its city label, verify that dates progress in the stated direction, and make sure arrival and departure times are local to their airports. Mark invented values as fictional.
- Export and inspect the PDF. Export only after the warning, status note, and fictional-data labels are present. Open the PDF on a phone and at print size. Confirm that the warning is still readable and that no text was clipped.
- Share it as an illustration. Name the file accordingly, for example
sample-itinerary-not-a-ticket.pdf. Do not submit it as evidence of a booking, visa eligibility, border permission, or check-in.
Make it polished without copying an airline’s credentials
Professional appearance comes from hierarchy and consistency, not from reproducing a carrier’s identity system. A restrained palette, aligned columns, and predictable labels make the page easy to scan. A colored band can identify the trip, while neutral cards can separate segments. Use a small icon or plain text arrow for the route rather than an airline-branded graphic.
Do not copy an airline logo, proprietary ticket stock, exact boarding-pass artwork, or a live booking reference. If a design exercise requires a mark, use a fictional carrier name and a clearly nonfunctional symbol. A real logo can make an otherwise fictional document look issued; authorization and truthfulness matter more than visual fidelity.
Do not add a barcode, QR code, seat assignment, ticket number, or confirmation code that could be scanned or checked. If a demo needs placeholder fields, label each one “Fictional — nonfunctional.” A string such as DEMO-0000-NONFUNCTIONAL is safer than a code that resembles a live record. Never place a real traveler’s booking reference in a public screenshot.
Use realistic-looking data without inventing a real transaction
Realistic does not mean unverifiable. For a fictional example, choose internally consistent cities, dates, and times, then mark the data as fictional in the passenger block or footer. For a private planning document, use your own actual trip information but keep the mockup warning if no reservation exists. For a presentation, redact names and codes before sharing.

Airline and flight details need special care. If you use a real route as a visual example, state that the route is illustrative and do not imply that the named flight is available or booked. If the details are invented, write “Fictional carrier” and “Fictional flight.” Never fabricate a booking reference and then rely on a disclaimer elsewhere to correct the impression.
Dates should include the year when the document might circulate beyond the immediate planning session. If a time is approximate, label it “illustrative time” rather than presenting a precise minute that appears copied from a live schedule. Keep the same convention throughout the page.
PDF handling and privacy
PDF is convenient because it preserves spacing and type across devices, but it does not add authenticity. Metadata, a file name, or a signature image cannot turn a mockup into an issued document. Remove hidden comments and revision layers before sharing, and inspect the exported file for exposed personal information.
- Use a neutral file name that includes “sample,” “mockup,” or “illustrative.”
- Check the visible page, document properties, and any attachments for private data.
- Send the PDF only to people who understand its status.
- Keep the editable source separate from a public copy so a recipient cannot accidentally remove the warning.
When a real authority asks for travel evidence
A mockup is not a substitute for the document an authority requests. Requirements depend on the purpose, destination, nationality, transit route, and date. Check the current instructions of the relevant consulate, immigration authority, border agency, or carrier before purchasing or presenting anything.
UK Home Office guidance for visitors states: “Submitting or presenting any of the documents listed below does not guarantee that your application for a visit visa or entry at the border will be successful.” Read the complete, jurisdiction-specific guidance at GOV.UK’s guide to supporting documents. The page also says visitors must be able to pay for a return or onward journey and gives a transit example in which the outward journey is confirmed and within 48 hours of arrival. Those statements describe UK guidance; they are not a universal rule for every country or application.

If an authority asks for a reservation, determine whether it wants an airline-system record, a ticket number, proof of onward travel, or another specific document. Ask the authority how it checks the record and how recent it must be. A PDF that looks convincing but cannot meet that check can create delays or a refusal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the U.S. 24-hour airline rule before assuming a hold exists
The U.S. Department of Transportation explains the conditional rule on its Buying a Ticket page. For qualifying airline bookings made at least seven days before scheduled departure, the airline must either allow cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund or allow a reservation hold at the quoted price for 24 hours. Airlines do not have to offer both options.
The rule does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies or other agents, according to the DOT. Therefore, do not write “all reservations have a 24-hour hold” on a mockup or advise a reader to rely on that assumption. Check the carrier’s and booking channel’s terms for the exact itinerary.
Provider reservations have provider-specific limits
Commercial reservation services describe different products and verification methods. ValidFlight says its service creates an airline-system reservation, supplies a PDF, and cannot be used to board. It also describes a standard unpaid reservation that is released after 48–72 hours. These are claims about that service’s current options, not a rule that every airline follows.
Onward Itinerary says its booking reference is issued by the provider and can be checked through a QR portal. Its page says the reference does not appear in the airline’s own Manage Booking or check-in pages and that each consulate decides whether it accepts the document. Read those terms at the provider’s explanation before treating such a document as suitable for a particular application.

When comparing a genuine option, ask five separate questions: who issued the reference, where it can be verified, how long it remains valid, whether it is ticketed and usable for boarding, and whether the receiving authority accepts it for your exact purpose. Keep the answers with the document; a visual mockup cannot answer them.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
The warning is tiny or hidden
Symptom: The page looks like a ticket until someone zooms in. Fix: Move the mockup label into the header, increase contrast, and test it at normal phone and print sizes.
A fictional code looks live
Symptom: A long alphanumeric string, barcode, or QR symbol invites verification. Fix: Delete it or replace it with a short, visibly fictional value labeled “nonfunctional.”
The route contains contradictions
Symptom: An arrival precedes departure, an airport code does not match the city, or a connection is shown after the final destination. Fix: Review segments in chronological order and label every time as local.
A sample is presented as proof
Symptom: The recipient assumes the PDF is a booking or boarding document. Fix: Put the status sentence in the header and file name, and send the recipient the authority’s requirements rather than making a stronger claim.
A reservation is called a ticket
Symptom: An unticketed hold is described as confirmed travel. Fix: State whether it is reserved, ticketed, or merely illustrative, and identify the issuer and expiry terms.
Quick Recap
Final pre-share checklist
- The header says “SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING” or an equally clear equivalent.
- The passenger is fictional or personal details are redacted.
- Origin, destination, airports, dates, local times, and segment order agree with one another.
- Airline and flight details are either true and relevant or explicitly fictional.
- No invented booking reference, ticket number, barcode, QR code, seat assignment, or copied airline mark could be mistaken for a live credential.
- Any placeholder is labeled fictional and nonfunctional.
- The status note explains whether no reservation exists or identifies the actual provider and document state.
- The PDF has been checked on a phone and at print size.
- The recipient knows that the file is an illustration, not proof of travel.
- If an authority needs evidence, its current checklist has been consulted and the requested genuine document will be used.
