The 2026 PS5 release brings the game and its post-launch updates, including Free Lanes, to a new platform. Contemporary reviews praise the fuller package while still noting friction such as frequent loading screens and familiar engine quirks. Whether it works for you depends on how much you value role-playing, quests, factions, and ship customization relative to varied, seamless exploration.
What reviewers think of Starfield
Reception is favorable in the critic aggregate, but individual reactions vary. On October 8, 2026, Metacritic’s all-platform page showed an 83 Metascore from 81 critic reviews and a 6.8 user score from 13,619 ratings. These are snapshots of a live page; scores and counts can change. GameSpot lists Michael Higham’s review at 7/10.

The aggregate does not settle whether the game will suit a particular player. Reviewers have weighed its role-playing and quest breadth against exploration variety, travel flow, presentation, and technical friction differently. In a 2023 review listed by Metacritic, 100 Movies Games and Tech called it “an epic work of science fiction wonder” and “a true Bethesda RPG at its heart.” That captures the appeal for players who enjoy Bethesda’s style, rather than a consensus that every system works equally well.
What changed by the 2026 PS5 release
Bethesda says Starfield launched on PS5 on April 7, 2026, with patches and updates released since the original launch, including Free Lanes. That means a PS5 player is encountering a later, more developed package than the one critics reviewed at the 2023 launch; it does not mean every original criticism has been resolved.

Selected 2026 PS5 reviews reflect both sides of that distinction. The Outerhaven reviewer described Starfield as a better game in 2026 after years of updates culminating in Free Lanes and Terran Armada. Vandal praised its art direction and PS5 Pro performance while also pointing to “outdated engine quirks and frequent loading screens.” These are reviewers’ judgments, not controlled performance measurements, and they show why updated content should not be confused with a complete redesign of the game’s underlying experience.
What kind of RPG is it?
Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios’ single-player science-fiction role-playing game, first released on September 6, 2023. Its central attraction is breadth: you build a character, pursue quests and factions, visit cities, customize ships, and decide how to approach a galaxy-scale setting. Bethesda’s game materials frame it as a role-playing and exploration experience rather than a tightly guided, uninterrupted journey.
Rank #2
- Standard Edition includes: Starfield base game.
- In this next-generation role-playing game, create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.
- Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits.
- Command the ship of your dreams and venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets.
- Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle.
That breadth comes with a trade-off. The premise invites expansive exploration, but selected contemporary reviews still raise concerns about repetitive exploration, navigation, loading, or older design traits. If you mainly want dense, consistently distinctive discoveries across every stretch of a game world, those reservations matter. If you enjoy choosing your own priorities, developing a character, and moving between quests and systems, the range of activities may be the stronger draw.

Bethesda’s original launch information names Xbox Series X|S and PC, while its 2026 announcement establishes PS5 availability beginning April 7, 2026. The 2026 PS5 reviews therefore assess a different release context from launch-era coverage: the game is on another platform and includes updates such as Free Lanes. Do not treat a 2023 review as a direct assessment of every later platform version, or a PS5 Pro reviewer’s impression as a benchmark for other hardware.

- Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
- Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
For PC, the available official launch page gives historical system requirements, but the information here does not verify them as current or establish performance on particular hardware. There are no controlled tests here to support claims about frame rates, stability, or comparative performance across PC, Xbox, PS5, and PS5 Pro.
Quick Recap
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you want a large single-player RPG built around character choices, quests, factions, ships, and self-directed activity.
- Be cautious if loading interruptions, navigation friction, or uneven exploration variety are deal-breakers for you; these concerns persist in some 2026 review commentary.
- Choose an edition by content: Standard is the base game, while PS5 Premium is the option Bethesda lists with both expansions. The digital Premium Upgrade is for base-game owners.
