Shattered Space is Starfield’s first major story expansion. It launched on September 30, 2024, and takes players to House Va’ruun’s homeworld, Va’ruun’kai. To begin, own and install the expansion, then complete the main quest “One Small Step.” Bethesda recommends level 35, but that is guidance—not a level requirement.

What is Starfield: Shattered Space?

Shattered Space is a story expansion set on Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of House Va’ruun. Bethesda describes the new location as fully handcrafted. A massive vortex has devastated much of Dazra and thrown House Va’ruun into chaos; the story follows an investigation into the vortex and the fate of the survivors. Bethesda’s September 27, 2024 launch-preparation article says players will “uncover the mysteries behind the vortex and learn the fate of the survivors of House Va’ruun.”

Bethesda’s expansion overview also identifies a frightening cosmic threat, a new planet to explore, and unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear. It does not establish a quest count or expected playtime.

When did Shattered Space come out?

Shattered Space launched on September 30, 2024. Bethesda announced the date ahead of release and confirmed the expansion was available in its September 30, 2024 launch-day announcement.

How do I start Shattered Space?

You need to own and install the expansion and complete Starfield’s introductory main quest, “One Small Step.” After that, travel by grav-jump to an orbit that is not already being used by a mission or encounter. The first eligible jump should trigger a distress call and reveal the star station The Oracle. Bethesda notes that it may take more than one jump. See Bethesda Support’s start instructions.

If the distress call does not appear

  1. Confirm that Shattered Space is installed and that you have completed “One Small Step.”
  2. Make a new manual save, then exit and reload the game.
  3. Grav-jump to an eligible orbit not tied to a mission or encounter. Try another eligible destination if needed.

What level should I be for Shattered Space?

Bethesda says any player can take on the expansion, but recommends level 35 for the best experience. Level 35 is not a hard gate; you can attempt the story below that level, though the recommendation is a useful indication of the intended challenge. The guidance appears in Bethesda Support’s start instructions.

Which Starfield editions include Shattered Space?

Check two things before buying: whether the option includes the expansion and whether it also includes the base game. Bethesda’s edition comparisons distinguish the Premium Edition from the Premium Edition Upgrade. An Upgrade is not a substitute for owning Starfield itself.

Edition or option Includes Shattered Space? Includes Starfield base game? Format information
Premium Edition, PC/Xbox Yes Yes See Bethesda’s PC/Xbox edition comparison for the current platform listing.
Premium Edition Upgrade, PC/Xbox Yes No; the base game is sold separately See Bethesda’s PC/Xbox edition comparison.
Premium Edition, PlayStation 5 Yes Yes Bethesda lists physical and digital Premium Edition options in its PlayStation edition comparison.
Premium Edition Upgrade, PlayStation 5 Yes No; requires the base game separately Digital-only, according to Bethesda’s PlayStation edition comparison.
Standard Edition, PC/Xbox Not listed as including the expansion Yes Bethesda says it includes the base game and is included with Xbox Game Pass; check the current store listing for add-on ownership details.

The Premium Edition is the relevant bundled option if you need both the game and expansion. If you already own Starfield, compare the Upgrade with buying the expansion on its own and confirm the listing for your platform. Game Pass inclusion of the Standard Edition does not, by itself, establish that the subscription includes Shattered Space.
