First identify your platform and symptom: a controller that will not connect needs pairing and power checks; one that connects but ignores buttons needs input-setting or game-specific troubleshooting. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, start with the relevant Xbox or PS5 connection steps, then check Options > Controls if the game detects the controller but its inputs or sensitivity are wrong.
Diagnose the controller problem before changing settings
Work out which of these best describes the failure:
- It will not connect or appear: check power, pairing, cable, and—on Xbox—the active user.
- It connects, but buttons do nothing: check the game’s control settings and whether the problem occurs in other games.
- It disconnects, lags, or responds inconsistently: check charge, wireless conditions, and the wired connection path.
- It works but feels wrong: review sensitivity, inversion, aim assistance, and remapped actions.
Note your platform and launcher, controller model, wired or wireless connection, game version, and whether the controller works in another game. These details help separate a game-specific issue from a console, PC, or controller problem.
Fix controller problems on Xbox
GSC’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the controller is powered on, paired with the console, and linked to the Xbox user who launched the game. If the game was started under a different user, restart it with the correct controller and user combination. GSC specifically warns that using a mouse and keyboard alongside a controller can affect the user/controller prompt. GSC’s Xbox controller troubleshooting guide gives this sequence:

- Check or replace the controller batteries.
- Reconnect wirelessly using the sync buttons, or connect by USB to test whether a wired connection works.
- Restart the Xbox and check for a controller firmware update in the Xbox controller settings.
- If needed, power-cycle the controller. Then hard-reset the console: hold its power button, unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and pair the controller again.
- If the controller still has problems, contact Xbox Support; persistent faults may indicate a hardware issue.
Fix DualSense problems on PS5
For connection failures, unresponsiveness, or input lag, GSC recommends resetting and re-pairing the DualSense, then checking its cable, charge, and wireless conditions. Follow GSC’s PlayStation troubleshooting guide:
- Turn off the PS5. Press the recessed reset button on the back of the DualSense for at least five seconds, then connect it to the console by USB-C and press the PS button to sync. GSC says this reset does not delete game saves or personal data.
- Use a USB-C cable that supports data transfer, connect directly to the console rather than through a hub, and try another console port if needed. Some USB-C cables charge but do not transfer data.
- If the controller works wired but not wirelessly, reduce nearby Bluetooth interference and obstructions, and move closer to the console.
- Charge the controller. If possible, test another DualSense or another PS5. If necessary, delete the Bluetooth device from the PS5 and pair it again.
- Check for PS5 system software and DualSense device software updates. If the controller remains unresponsive, consult PlayStation Support about repair or replacement.
The data-capable cable is useful for wired testing and re-pairing; it is not a general solution to every game-input problem.

Reset or adjust the in-game controls
The game supports gamepad controls and recognizes the input device automatically, according to GSC’s control customization guide. From the main menu, open Options > Controls. The game offers settings for vibration, horizontal and vertical inversion, overall stick sensitivity, aiming sensitivity, and whether actions such as sprinting, crouching, leaning, aiming, and opening selectors are held, toggled, or both. Aim assistance can be set to Default, Focusing, Full, or Custom.
If the controller is detected but remapped inputs or unfamiliar settings make it behave incorrectly, reset the gamepad settings: open Options > Controls, press Y to reset, then X to apply.

Check whether the issue matches a game update
GSC’s Update 2.0, published September 1, 2026, lists more than 500 bug fixes overall and includes several specific UI, controls, and input fixes. These include issues with remapping O and Y actions, inputs locking after closing the personal stash, loss of all input after using a ladder while overweight, gamepad scope attachment, and maximum camera sensitivity being lower than expected on DualSense. The notes do not say that every controller problem is fixed. Read the Update 2.0 notes and compare them with your game version and symptom.
What to try on PC and Steam
GSC’s published guidance covers gamepad settings and particular fixes, but does not provide a dedicated PC controller troubleshooting procedure. Steam community discussions from November 2024 include reports of controller icons appearing while button inputs fail, alongside conflicting experiences with Steam Input, controller profiles, and third-party emulation. Those are anecdotal reports, not verified fixes; they do not establish a single cause for PC controller problems.

If you use the Steam version, you can treat a Steam Input or controller-profile change as a reversible experiment: record the current setting, change one thing at a time, and undo it if input gets worse. Capture the controller model, connection type, launcher, game version, operating system, and the result of any change. For a reproducible technical issue, report those details through GSC’s support site. Do not assume a particular input API, Windows service, or controller model is responsible without evidence for your setup.

Test the controller in another game, and if practical test another controller in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. If it fails across games or devices, the problem is less likely to be limited to this game’s control settings. After connection, charge, firmware, and settings checks, use the relevant platform’s support route: GSC directs Xbox users to Xbox Support for persistent trouble and PS5 users to PlayStation Support if the DualSense remains unresponsive.
