What is Shattered Space?
Bethesda Game Studios describes Shattered Space as Starfield’s first major expansion. It takes players to Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of House Va’ruun, where a vortex has devastated the city of Dazra and thrown the faction into chaos. The story follows the vortex and the survivors.

Why were the launch reviews mixed?
Early reports show a divided reception, but the figures are platform-specific snapshots taken at different times. They are not current scores, and storefront ratings should not be treated as a representative survey of every player.

GamesRadar’s launch-week report described complaints about limited content and a relatively short main story, including comparisons with earlier Bethesda expansions. Windows Central’s report and October 3 update likewise noted criticism of the amount of content and playthrough length. It also identified more focused roleplaying around a single location as a favorable theme.
The change between Windows Central’s original and October 3 figures shows that the reported reception shifted during launch week. The counts and ratings come from different storefronts and reporting snapshots, so they should not be combined into one score.
Is Shattered Space worth playing?
The launch-week ratings alone cannot answer that for every player. The reported appeal was a concentrated roleplaying story centered on one location; the main criticism was that the expansion felt limited in content and short. Those are outlet summaries of early user feedback, not a guarantee of how any individual player will feel.
Use that trade-off to judge fit: a player looking for a focused Va’ruun story may find the premise appealing, while someone expecting a large volume of new content may be less satisfied. The cited reports do not establish a controlled performance comparison between platforms or a robust critic-score consensus.
What do you need to access the expansion?

Bethesda’s launch guide says Premium and Constellation Edition owners receive the expansion with their purchase. Standard Edition owners can access it by buying the Digital Premium Upgrade; Game Pass subscribers can upgrade to Premium Edition to access Shattered Space. How do you start Shattered Space?
- Complete the opening main-quest mission, “One Small Step.”
- On a later grav-jump, travel to an orbit that is not already being used by a mission or encounter. A distress call should appear and trigger the expansion’s start.
- Consider Bethesda’s recommended level of 35 for the best experience; it is a recommendation, not a stated access requirement.
