In a July 17, 2026 studio statement, Bethesda Game Studios said it would continue adding stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and updates, and was preparing new Starborn content for 2027. The studio did not say whether that content will be a paid expansion, or give its scope, price, or release date.
What Bethesda has said about Starfield’s future
Bethesda’s July 17, 2026 statement says Starfield “remains an important part of our future.” It promises continued stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates, and says the studio is preparing new Starborn content “next year.” Because the statement was published in 2026, that means 2027. That is a public commitment to continued support, but not a formal announcement of an expansion. Bethesda did not identify the Starborn content as a paid DLC, describe its size or format, set a price, or provide a launch date. Until the studio supplies those details, “Starborn content” is the most accurate description.
What Starfield content is already available
The idea that Starfield has received no story content since launch is incorrect. Bethesda’s expansions page lists two named story add-ons, Shattered Space and Terran Armada. Free Lanes is a free game update, not a story expansion.

- Shattered Space: Bethesda describes this story expansion as taking players to Dazra and exploring House Va’Ruun. Steam lists its release date as September 30, 2024; availability and purchase details may vary by store and platform. Steam’s Starfield DLC listing.
- Terran Armada: Bethesda identifies this as Starfield story content. It launched alongside the PlayStation 5 version and Free Lanes update on April 7, 2026.
- Free Lanes: Bethesda and PlayStation described this as a free update accompanying the April 7, 2026 launch on PS5.
Whether an owner needs to buy either story add-on depends on platform and edition. Bethesda Support says some PS5 editions include Shattered Space and Terran Armada; check the exact edition before purchasing. Bethesda Support’s PS5 edition details.

The gap between what Bethesda has promised and what it has detailed helps explain why the next release remains uncertain. The statement confirms a direction, not enough information to judge what the 2027 content will contain or when players will be able to play it.

What the player figures do—and don’t—show
Bethesda’s July statement reported over 17 million players and almost a billion hours logged. These are figures published by the studio in 2026, not independently verified totals. The statement does not break them down by platform or provide a player-sentiment survey, so they cannot establish how many players are currently active or how the community as a whole feels about communication.

Players have publicly asked questions such as whether there has been news since Shattered Space and why there has been little communication about updates or DLC. Those posts show that some players are asking for clearer news; they do not establish how widespread that view is. Bethesda’s July statement does answer the broad question of whether support is continuing, while leaving the most practical details about the next Starborn release open.

Where Starfield is available
Starfield launched on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, as well as being available on its existing platforms. Bethesda announced the PS5 launch on March 17, 2026; its platform announcement and PlayStation’s announcement give the launch context. Edition contents differ, so verify platform, edition, and included add-ons in the specific store listing before buying.
