Bethesda’s Starfield Update 1.11.36, released May 15, 2024, improved surface maps, added a mode for decorating ship interiors and introduced Xbox Series X graphics and frame-rate settings that include a selectable 60 fps target. That target is a setting, not a promise of a locked 60 fps. The update is not the game’s latest: Bethesda released the Free Lanes update in April 2026.
What Starfield Update 1.11.36 added
Bethesda’s May 15, 2024 release notes describe several changes, with surface maps, ship customization and Xbox display controls among the main additions. The notes call the maps improved but do not quantify how much more detailed they are or provide a map-detail benchmark.
Improved surface maps
The update improved the surface maps players use while exploring planets. Bethesda’s notes do not specify a measurable level of added detail, so “improved” is the clearest description supported by the announcement.
Ship Decoration mode
Ship Decoration mode lets players customize ship interiors in a manner similar to decorating Outposts. It is an in-game feature, not a requirement to buy real-world decoration items.

Other additions
The same update added gameplay options and container-menu tabs, let players change traits and appearance after entering the Unity, and introduced a dialogue-camera toggle. Its Xbox Series X display controls are covered below. Bethesda’s Update 1.11.36 notes list the full feature set.
How to select 60 fps on Xbox Series X
Update 1.11.36 added controls for choosing a graphics priority, frame-rate target and VSync setting. Bethesda’s available targets depend on the display:

| Display setup | Selectable frame-rate targets |
|---|---|
| 120 Hz display with VRR | 30, 40, 60 or uncapped |
| No 120 Hz VRR display | 30 or 60 |
Bethesda recommends a 120 Hz VRR display for access to the full set of choices. With that setup, the game defaults to 40 fps with full visuals. A 120 Hz VRR display is not required to select 60 fps: without one, the release notes still list 30 and 60 as options. Bethesda cautions that screen tearing may occur when selecting 60 on a non-VRR display.
Choose between Visuals and Performance
Visuals prioritizes the highest resolution and preserves detail in effects, lighting and crowds. Performance lowers internal resolution and detail in those areas to prioritize performance. Either mode may dynamically adjust internal resolution in demanding scenes. Bethesda recommends Performance mode for targets of 60 fps or higher.

Understand VSync and the 60 fps target
VSync synchronizes frames with the display and limits the number of frames. Turning it off can cause screen tearing; turning it on may reduce tearing by synchronizing output. The release notes provide configuration options and describe possible trade-offs, but do not establish that the game consistently reaches or holds 60 fps. A selected target should not be read as an independently measured performance guarantee.

No. Update 1.11.36 is the May 2024 update. Bethesda later released Starfield’s Free Lanes update, version 1.16.236, on April 7, 2026, for all platforms. It added cruise-mode travel between planets in a system, ship and Outpost improvements, X-Tech equipment customization, a database menu, the Moon Jumper vehicle, and additional locations and encounters. See Bethesda’s Free Lanes update notes for those later changes.
