What Bethesda launched
Bethesda introduced Creations as Starfield’s official mod-support ecosystem in its June 2024 update. The update announcement said players could download the Starfield Creation Kit on Steam and noted Bethesda Game Studios Creations in the game update. Bethesda’s June 9, 2024 update announcement and its June update overview describe the launch.
The Creation Kit is an authoring tool, not the game itself: it is intended for people creating Starfield content. Steam says creators can make quests, environments, characters, dialogue, weapons, and other content, then share Creations through Bethesda.net. Where the game update and editor are available
Bethesda described the June 2024 Starfield game update as available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Separately, Steam lists the Creation Kit as a Windows application. The editor’s Steam availability does not mean the editor itself is available on Xbox.

Bethesda Support says the Creation Kit can be downloaded free from Steam. However, the cited material does not establish whether owning Starfield on Steam is required to download or use the editor, or whether requirements differ for Microsoft Store or Game Pass copies. Check current Bethesda or Steam support information for your specific copy before relying on it.

The editor is listed as a free download on Steam. Steam’s listing, accessed October 8, 2026, gives these Windows requirements; requirements and listing details can change, so check the current page before installing.

These figures are Steam’s published editor requirements, not a guarantee that every project will perform identically on hardware that meets them. In particular, the listed memory target is substantial: Steam specifies 32 GB minimum and 48 GB recommended.

- Select the option to install or download the free editor through Steam.
