Starfield’s REV-8 rover arrived in a free game update in August 2024, while the Shattered Space expansion launched on September 30, 2024. The rover is available to buy in-game with credits; Shattered Space requires an eligible edition or upgrade.
When did Starfield: Shattered Space come out?
Shattered Space launched on September 30, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage also lists Windows PC and Steam. Bethesda confirmed the launch date in its launch guide; the release-day Starfield update 1.14.70 notes identify the expansion as the game’s first story expansion.

What was the REV-8 update?
The REV-8 is a land vehicle added to Starfield through a free game update in August 2024. It lets players travel across planetary surfaces by rover and features a mounted turret and forward boosters. Bethesda introduced it in its September 27, 2024 launch guide with the description, “The REV-8 has landed! Now is your chance to explore new frontiers (and reach new heights) in your very own land cruiser.”

The update is free, but the vehicle itself must be purchased in-game. Visit a Ship Services Technician at a major landing zone and buy the REV-8 using credits, as described by Xbox Wire’s launch guide.

How to start Shattered Space
- Complete “One Small Step,” the introductory mission in Starfield’s main quest.
- Make a grav-jump to an orbit that is not already being used by a mission or encounter.
- Respond to the distress call that appears and follow it to The Oracle, which begins the expansion’s story.
Bethesda says any player can attempt the expansion, but recommends level 35 for the best experience. The story unfolds on Va’ruun’kai, House Va’ruun’s home world, where a vortex disaster leads into mysteries surrounding the faction. Xbox Wire describes the handcrafted setting as having “over 50 new locations” on Va’ruun’kai; that is a location count, not a count of missions or planets (Xbox Wire, August 22, 2024).

Shattered Space is a digital expansion. Bethesda’s launch guide says it is included with the Premium and Constellation editions. Standard Edition owners can buy the Digital Premium Upgrade; Game Pass subscribers can upgrade to Premium Edition for access. The cited guidance does not say that every base-game or Game Pass subscription includes the expansion.
