Xbox revealed Gears of War: E-Day at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024. It is no longer an upcoming reveal. Xbox Wire reported that early access began on October 1, 2026 for Premium Edition players and for Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade, and Xbox’s official game listing gives October 6, 2026 as the worldwide release date.
What Xbox announced in 2024
The reveal came during the Xbox Games Showcase. The Coalition presented E-Day as a story about the early relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, set as Emergence Day brings the Locust threat to Sera. In the studio’s framing, the Locust are a mysterious new threat to the characters at this earlier point in the timeline. Xbox Wire described the game explicitly as a new mainline entry in the Gears of War series, not a spin-off.

Is Gears of War: E-Day a prequel?
In practical terms, yes. Xbox’s official game listing says the story takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus and Dominic as the Locust Horde first erupts from below. The studio calls it an origin story that explores the series’ beginnings while continuing the ongoing Gears narrative. In a 2024 developer interview, The Coalition said the team was proud of Gears 4 and Gears 5 and was not abandoning that storyline.

Release date and where you can play it
The official release date is October 6, 2026. Early access started October 1 for the groups described above, so players who bought the Premium Edition or hold the Premium Upgrade through Game Pass could start before the worldwide launch.

Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox describes the game as supporting Xbox Play Anywhere. One purchase can be played on an Xbox console and on PC without buying the game a second time. Check your storefront library before buying, because Play Anywhere eligibility is tied to the purchase on the account you use.

Game Pass and cloud play
Xbox lists the game as included with Game Pass. Xbox Wire adds that cloud play is available through Game Pass Ultimate and through GeForce NOW. Pricing and subscription terms for those services are not covered here and change independently of this announcement; check the live service pages before subscribing.
Performance targets and technical claims
Xbox’s listing advertises 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS across Campaign and Multiplayer. The fine print says 4K and 60 FPS require a compatible display. These are Xbox’s published targets. No independent testing of frame rate or resolution is cited in the official sources.

The studio’s technical claims come from its developers. In a 2024 interview, Kate Rayner, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition, said the game includes “over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5.” She also described hardware ray-traced lighting, reflections, shadows, destruction, and animation technology. The reveal trailer was powered by Unreal Engine 5, and the game’s assets were rebuilt in that engine. Treat the 100-times figure as a developer’s comparison, not a measured benchmark.
Rayner’s stated ambition, in her words, was: “Our ambition is to, once again, set a new standard in technical excellence.” She also said: “Our goal with the announcement trailer was to highlight our commitment to pushing the boundaries of both storytelling and technology in gaming.”
At launch, Mike Crump, Studio Head at The Coalition, said: “We can’t wait for you to experience Emergence Day for yourselves.”
Editions, collectibles and related products
Premium Edition and Premium Upgrade
Early access on October 1 was offered to Premium Edition players and to Game Pass subscribers who hold the Premium Upgrade. The official sources do not give the price of either option, so check the Xbox Games Store or the Game Pass page for current terms.

Collector’s Edition
The Collector’s Edition, announced by The Coalition in 2026, is the physical fan package. Its stated contents are:
- A 15-inch statue
- An illustrated SteelBook
- Replica COG tags
- An in-game photograph replica
- An art print
- A copy of the Premium Edition
The Xbox Series X version of the Collector’s Edition includes a disc. The edition is sold through the Xbox Game Studios Shop and select retailers. Quantities are limited, and regional availability varies. The official announcement does not establish current stock or pricing.

The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day, published by Insight Editions, collects developer interviews about art, story, sound, and design. It is the most direct way to read more about how the game was made, and Xbox Wire names it as an official release.

Xbox Wire names a Gears of War: E-Day Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller as available. The same post names an 8BitDo E-Day Retro 87 keyboard and a Retro R8 mouse for PC players, with a targeted launch date of October 30. Confirm current availability before buying, since that date is a target rather than a confirmed in-stock date.
What the official sources do not establish
- Current prices for the base game, Premium Edition, or Collector’s Edition
