stat.dll is not one standard Windows component, so the correct fix depends on which application requested it. Do not download a random copy or place one in System32; identify the parent program, then repair or reinstall that program from its trusted installer.
What this file actually does
stat.dll is a real DLL filename used by unrelated applications. The filename alone does not identify its publisher, version, architecture, or purpose.
Known examples include:
- The U.S. EPA’s legacy 3MRA environmental-risk modelling software, where
STAT.DLLis the “HWIR Statistical Dynamic Link Library” and works withHwirMC.dll. - FormAnalyzer Designer, whose documentation shows a standard Windows load error for
STAT.DLL. - Older Electronics Workbench Multisim 8 Trial installations, where a copy appears in the product’s
backcomp.msdirectory. - The MSYS2
zshpackage, which contains a differentstat.dllinside the package’s own Unix-like runtime directory.
These are separate files belonging to separate software products. There is no reliable evidence that stat.dll is a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component stored in %SystemRoot%System32 or %SystemRoot%SysWOW64.
Windows loads a DLL in the context of the application that requested it. A file with the right name but the wrong exports, architecture, dependencies, or version can produce a different error instead of fixing the original one.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Fix stat.dll in the safest order
1. Identify the application that requested the file
Read the complete error instead of searching only for the filename. Record:
- The application name
- The executable name
- The full path shown in the error, shortcut, or Task Manager
- Your Windows version
- Whether the software is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the error affects one user or every user
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
You can also open Task Manager, select the failing application if it remains visible, right-click it, and choose Open file location.
Do not assume the file belongs to Windows merely because the message appears in Windows. If the executable is inside a program folder, the program that owns that folder is the first repair target.
2. Check the application folder and Recycle Bin
Open the application’s installation folder and search for stat.dll. Also check the Recycle Bin if the problem appeared after manual cleanup.
If a DLL is present, do not assume it is correct. A manually copied file may have the right name but incompatible exports or dependencies. If you copied it from another computer or a download site, remove that copy only if you can safely restore the application through its installer, then continue with a repair or reinstall.
Avoid copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows uses different search and redirection rules for 32-bit and 64-bit programs, and putting an unrelated DLL in a system directory can create version conflicts or security risks.
3. Use Repair, Verify, or the application’s launcher
Look for a built-in repair option before uninstalling:

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the menu button beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some programs provide their own Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair command in a launcher or setup utility. Use that option instead when available.

If Repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Download or locate the original installer from the software publisher.
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the trusted installer.
- Start the application using its newly created shortcut.
If the program stores important projects or settings, back them up before uninstalling. Reinstalling the parent application is the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
4. Use the correct product source
Do not use a generic DLL repository. A safe replacement must come from the application’s own installer, official launcher, original product media, or a trusted package manager used by that product.
For the known examples:
- EPA 3MRA: The archived package uses
Install_3MRA.EXEand is a legacy release intended for Windows 98, NT, 2000, and XP. A current Windows system may need compatibility settings or a suitable virtual machine rather than a replacement DLL. - FormAnalyzer Designer: Reinstall the matching FormAnalyzer release from its legitimate installation media or publisher source.
- Multisim 8 Trial: Use the matching product installer or media. Do not substitute a DLL from another electronics program.
- MSYS2: Repair or reinstall the relevant MSYS2 package through the MSYS2 environment. Its
stat.dllis not a Windows copy intended for unrelated applications.
The application’s installer must supply the correct file and any dependent files together.
5. Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file disappeared after an antivirus scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the application.
- Check the file path and detection name.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate application.
- Scan the original installer before reinstalling.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified its origin and trust the complete application. If the detection returns, do not repeatedly whitelist the DLL. Remove the untrusted or damaged installation and obtain a clean installer from the publisher.
A filename match is not proof that a file is safe. Malware can use a familiar DLL name, and a repackaged installer may contain a modified file.

6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but the application still needs DLLs built for its own architecture.
Check the application’s documentation or installer for its required architecture. Install the matching edition rather than copying files between computers.

The Windows directory names are counterintuitive:
System32normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
That does not mean stat.dll belongs in either directory. Private application DLLs normally remain with the application that uses them. System32 and SysWOW64 are not interchangeable repair destinations.
An error such as “the procedure entry point could not be located” often indicates that the file is present but is the wrong build, or that another dependency is incompatible. Reinstall the complete application instead of trying both architectures manually.
7. Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes Windows names stat.dll because it was the module being loaded when a dependent file failed. Other messages may say:
- The code execution cannot proceed
- The procedure entry point could not be located
- The file is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error
Record the entire message. If reinstalling the parent application does not help, collect the executable path, application version, Windows version, architecture, and the original DLL directory. The application vendor may need to identify the missing runtime or dependent module.

8. Update or reinstall related drivers only when the application requires one
A driver is relevant when the failing program depends on a capture device, printer, hardware interface, graphics device, or other installed equipment. It is not a general remedy for an unrelated application DLL.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- If the device remains faulty, uninstall the device, restart Windows, and install the manufacturer’s current driver.

9. Repair Windows components when the evidence points to Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally will not recreate a private third-party stat.dll.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and review the result. If only one third-party application still fails, return to that application’s installer rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.

10. Use regsvr32 only when the vendor requires registration
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components.

Use it only when the application’s documentation explicitly says that its DLL must be registered:
- Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Change to the directory containing the vendor-supplied DLL.
- Run the command specified by the vendor, using the correct 32-bit or 64-bit
regsvr32. - Restart the application.
Running regsvr32 stat.dll blindly may return an entry-point error and will not repair an ordinary runtime, plugin, statistical, or application-support DLL.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A generic download can have the wrong:
- Application ownership
- Version
- Architecture
- Exported functions
- Dependent files
- Digital signature
- Installation path
It may also contain malware or overwrite a legitimate application file. Even if the message changes, the application may still be loading an incompatible component.
Use the original publisher, official installer, product media, or the application’s trusted package manager. Never whitelist an unknown DLL just because its filename is stat.dll.

If the error remains after a clean reinstall, capture:
- The complete error text
- The application executable and full path
- The application version
- Windows version and architecture
- Whether the file was quarantined
- The DLL’s original directory
- Whether another Windows user can start the program
System Restore is appropriate only when the program worked previously and a recent change clearly caused the failure. It is not a replacement method for an unidentified DLL.
