Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorswsshared.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Store and app infrastructure. If wsshared.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows and its Store components rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Microsoft servicing records list WSShared.dll alongside components such as WinStoreUI.dll and Windows.ApplicationModel.Store.dll. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Microsoft has documented cases where an older WSShared.dll no longer matched WinStoreUI.dll, causing RuntimeBroker and Windows Store problems. Microsoft’s Windows Store file list and RuntimeBroker troubleshooting article confirm this relationship.
Version and architecture guide
Microsoft records historical wsshared.dll builds in both 32-bit and 64-bit forms. These are reference examples, not a complete catalogue of every Windows-serviced version.
| Architecture | Historical Windows versions |
|---|---|
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.494, 6.3.9600.17415, 6.3.9600.17278, 6.3.9600.17031, 6.2.9200.16897 |
| 64-bit | 6.3.9600.17415, 6.3.9600.17278 |
The correct file depends on the Windows build, edition, architecture, and installed updates. A 64-bit Windows installation can still need 32-bit components for a 32-bit application. Do not choose a DLL based only on its version number or file size.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wsshared.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wsshared.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wsshared.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wsshared.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- RuntimeBroker crashes or reports that you are not connected to the Windows Store.
These messages do not all identify the same failure:
- Missing or not found: Windows or an application cannot locate the required component.
- Could not be loaded: The file may be damaged, incompatible, blocked, or missing a dependency.
- Not designed to run on Windows: The file may be corrupt or the wrong architecture.
- Specified module could not be found: Windows may be reporting a dependency of
wsshared.dll, not necessarilywsshared.dllitself.
The problem can affect Microsoft Store, RuntimeBroker, or another Windows app. A third-party program can also surface a Windows loader error while using a Windows component.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows components are normally restored and kept compatible through servicing. This is the safest first step, especially if the problem began after an interrupted update, rollback, cleanup operation, or restart.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every applicable update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected Store app or program again.
If Windows reports that a restart is pending, restart before testing. Microsoft specifically resolved a documented WSShared.dll and WinStoreUI.dll mismatch through Windows Update followed by a restart.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with the repair commands below. Do not try to replace the DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired source.
- Select Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Store, Windows app, or program that produced the error.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because SFC may need files from the component store. The useful SFC results are:

- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file problem was detected.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the advanced repair section.
Repeatedly running SFC without addressing a damaged component store is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.
If manually interpreting DISM and SFC results means hunting through logs and guessing which repair changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in path.
Fix 3: Reset Microsoft Store and repair the affected app
Use this step when Microsoft Store, a Store-installed app, or RuntimeBroker is the only affected area.
Reset the Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
wsreset.exe
- Press Enter.
- Wait while the blank command window completes.
- Try opening Microsoft Store again.
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Store troubleshooting step. It clears the Store cache without requiring a loose copy of wsshared.dll.
Repair or reset a Store app
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the app.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset and test again.
Reset may remove the app’s local settings or sign-in state. If only one program fails while Store and other Windows apps work, repairing or reinstalling that program may be more appropriate than repeatedly repairing all of Windows.
Fix 4: Reinstall the affected program from its official source
A program can report wsshared.dll even when its own files, package registration, or dependencies are damaged.
- Note the exact program named in the error.
- Check whether it has an update inside its own settings.
- Close the program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall if repair is unavailable.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the program publisher’s official website or Microsoft Store.
- Install the version intended for your Windows architecture.
- Start the program again.
Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ will repair wsshared.dll. A Visual C++ repair is relevant when the error names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, not when it names this Windows Store component.
If the program is old, run its installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. Also check the program publisher’s compatibility guidance instead of placing a downloaded DLL beside the executable.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine or block a Windows file, although there is no verified basis to call this a common wsshared.dll false-positive campaign.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
wsshared.dll. - Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
- First confirm that it came from a normal Windows component location and is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- Run a full scan.
- Restore the item only if you have confirmed it is genuine and the security product identifies it as safe.
If the file appears in an application’s private folder, treat it cautiously. A copied DLL may be outdated, altered, or unrelated to the Windows component.
Fix 6: Check the file and architecture without replacing it
Do not search every folder for a copy to use as a replacement. Instead, use the error context to identify whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 version of its dependencies.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 version.
- 64-bit Windows can run both kinds of applications.
- Historical Windows component versions are not automatically interchangeable.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Read System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
This does not by itself identify the architecture of the failing application. The safe solution is to let Windows servicing or the official application installer provide the matching files.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only when the error identifies one
wsshared.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not the primary repair path. Use it only if the failure began with a particular device, graphics component, Store game, or hardware-dependent application.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If Windows cannot find a driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appeared unless the application or event history points to that device.
Manually hunting through Device Manager for stale versions can be time-consuming, especially when several devices have pending updates. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation through its full version is optional; updating the program that actually owns the hardware remains the definitive step when that program is the cause.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and a restore point exists from before the failure.

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected program.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents and photos, but review the affected-program list before confirming.

If DISM cannot repair the file
If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found:
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
- Use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s
/Sourceoption. - Match the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture as closely as possible.
- Run SFC again after DISM completes.
- Restart and retest.
Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance explains how to use a suitable source. If the component store remains damaged, use an in-place Windows repair installation rather than substituting a downloaded DLL.
If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files, check the CBS log, review disk health, and consider running:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the disk check for the next restart. Back up important files before deeper repair work.

Do not download wsshared.dll from a random DLL site
A loose download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match WinStoreUI.dll and other Windows components. It may also hide the real problem, such as component-store corruption or a failed update.

Do not run Regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 registers certain self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs by calling DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command, and there is no verified requirement to register WSShared.dll.
Running:
regsvr32 wsshared.dll
may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not repair the component.

FAQ
Is wsshared.dll malware?
The name belongs to a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name outside normal Windows component locations still deserves verification. Check its location, Microsoft digital signature, and security-scan result before trusting it.
Is it part of Visual C++?
No. Microsoft servicing records associate it with Windows Store and app infrastructure, not Visual C++ Redistributable. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the actual error names an MSVC runtime file.
Does Windows 11 contain this file?
The documented file history covers Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era builds, with later servicing records continuing to list it. Do not assume every current Windows release has the same file or version. A Windows 11 program can still surface a loader error involving an older or related component.
Should I install a 32-bit or 64-bit copy?
Do not manually install either. Let Windows servicing provide the correct component. For application dependencies, 32-bit programs need x86 files and 64-bit programs need x64 files.
What if only one game or program reports the error?
Repair or reinstall that program from its official source, then run Windows Update and DISM/SFC if the error persists. The program may be exposing a Windows loader failure without owning the Microsoft component.
When should I perform a repair installation?
Use an in-place Windows repair installation when Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Store reset, app repair, and System Restore have not resolved the problem, or when DISM cannot restore the component store from a matching source. This is safer than replacing wsshared.dll with an unverified copy.
