State of Decay 3 is officially targeted for release in 2027, but Xbox has not announced a specific date or price. When is State of Decay 3 coming out?
State of Decay 3 is scheduled for 2027. Xbox’s product page lists that year, and its 2026 gameplay-reveal article confirms the same target. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt said the team was “aiming for a 2027 release.” The exact day and month have not been announced.

The 2024 showcase trailer did not include a release date. Its significance was that it brought the game back into view with a new look at its world and survival themes, rather than setting a launch timetable.
Which platforms will State of Decay 3 support?
Xbox’s 2026 reveal lists Xbox, PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5, and says the game will be included with Game Pass. It also confirms Xbox Play Anywhere. The Xbox product page specifies Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. How many players can play State of Decay 3 co-op?
The 2026 reveal confirms solo play or shared-world co-op for up to four players. That is the latest specific description of the multiplayer format: players can enter a shared world together, rather than the official description limiting co-op to a short, separate session.
Cooperative defense was already part of the 2024 trailer’s framing, which showed a typical four-player co-op session according to Undead Labs’ interview. That interview also said the team would share more co-op and customization details later.

How big is the State of Decay 3 map?
Creative Director Kevin Patzelt described the playable space as “about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.” He also said it would be fully open from the moment players join. This is a comparison to one State of Decay 2 map, not a published area measurement in square miles or kilometers.

What kind of game is State of Decay 3?
It is an open-world zombie survival game built around keeping a community alive. The 2024 Xbox recap describes a setting years into the apocalypse, where an evolving zombie threat is taking over the landscape and players fight to reclaim lost ground while building a life for survivor homesteaders. The 2026 reveal adds settlement construction, survivor-community management, weapon crafting, exploration and zombie combat.

Community survival and permadeath
Survivors are more than interchangeable fighters: the series’ permadeath means a lost community member can be gone for good. The 2024 trailer emphasized that consequence with a wall of remembrance for fallen survivors. Studio Head Philip Holt described the series as an “every person’s survival experience,” rather than a conventional hero’s journey.
What the 2024 trailer showed
Xbox’s showcase recap highlighted brutal combat, defending the survivor group together, permadeath and a moment in which a player opens a car door to hit a zombie while driving. These details conveyed the game’s survival tone and combat ideas, but the trailer alone did not establish a full feature list.

Was the State of Decay 3 2024 trailer actual gameplay?
Undead Labs said the 2024 trailer used “all in-game assets, all rendered from the game” and depicted a typical four-player co-op session. That does not mean every moment was a live, unedited gameplay capture. In its 2026 reveal, Patzelt separately said everything shown in that trailer was from the game and that it did not use CGI.

Official Xbox sources have not announced an exact release date, launch price or complete feature list. The Xbox product page marks the game’s rating as pending, so a final ESRB rating has not been confirmed. The 2024 interview also indicated that further co-op and customization information would come later.
