“Coming on really well” was Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan’s positive but deliberately non-specific description of State of Decay 3 in January 2026. Since then, the game has had a gameplay reveal and a 2027 target window; Undead Labs also said closed beta playtests were planned before the end of 2026. The 2027 launch is a target, not a dated release commitment.
What did Xbox mean by “coming on really well”?
In a January 2026 GamesRadar+ interview, Duncan said he had visited Undead Labs several times in the preceding six to eight months and had played the game with the team “a bunch of times.” He described its progress as “coming on really well” and said Xbox was excited about the franchise and its potential.

He did not give a release date or promise a particular reveal. His expectation that he would see more of the game “in the coming year” was a broad indication of future visibility, not a schedule for a trailer or launch. The comment conveyed a positive impression from his visits and play sessions, but no percentage complete or other measurable development milestone.

When can you play State of Decay 3?
The latest concrete timing in the official announcements here is a 2027 target launch. Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 gameplay-reveal interview said the game was in alpha and that players were already testing an alpha build. Undead Labs reiterated the 2027 target in its August announcement. Neither announcement specifies a month or day.

Undead Labs said on August 26 that closed beta playtests were planned before the end of 2026, with alpha and beta access to expand to more players over time. That is a plan, not confirmation that a beta has opened. The studio described testing as important for the game’s largest map to date and its untethered multiplayer. What has the gameplay reveal confirmed?
The June 2026 reveal presents State of Decay 3 as an open-world survival sandbox playable solo or in shared-world co-op for up to four players. Xbox Wire’s interview discusses exploration, settlement building, weapon crafting, and evolving zombie threats; players can develop as many as three bases. These are announced gameplay features, not a promise that every detail will remain unchanged before release.

The reveal also listed planned availability on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere, Steam, and PlayStation 5. These are announced plans and could change before launch. Is State of Decay 3 still in development?
Yes. On September 22, 2026, Undead Labs announced that it had completed its separation from Xbox and was operating as an independent, employee-owned studio. The studio said State of Decay 3 remained in development and retained its 2027 target. The change in studio ownership does not, by itself, establish a new release schedule or a change to the announced platforms. Read the studio’s announcement.
