A limited Steam account has not recorded at least $5 USD in qualifying spending on that account. Valve uses this restriction to curb spam, phishing, and scams; it limits some Community and social features, but is not itself a ban or a general suspension from playing games. Adding qualifying funds or making an eligible purchase through Steam is the usual fix. It does not, however, automatically clear separate Market, trading, security, or ban restrictions.
Before spending money, check that Steam is reporting a limited account—not a different restriction—and use a transaction Valve counts. See Valve’s Limited User Accounts FAQ and its separate Trading and Market Restrictions FAQ.

What does “limited account” mean?
Steam’s limited-user status is an account-level restriction on certain community features until the account records the required qualifying spending. It is aimed at reducing abuse from accounts used for spam, phishing, and scams. It does not mean the account has been banned: you can generally sign in, buy products, activate eligible products, download and play owned games, and use ordinary game functions. Individual games may impose their own requirements.
Account age alone does not remove the status. What matters is qualifying spending recorded on the affected Steam account. Valve can change which features are restricted, so the list below is illustrative rather than exhaustive; check the current Valve FAQ if a specific action is blocked.

Which features can a limited account lose access to?
Depending on Steam’s current rules and the action involved, a limited account may be unable to:
- Send friend invitations in the usual way or use some friend-related features.
- Participate fully in Steam Community discussions or create and edit some community content.
- Write reviews or vote on Steam Reviews and Workshop items.
- Use the Community Market or trade Steam Community items, such as trading cards and booster packs.
- Use some profile, group, Workshop, or other community interactions.
A failed friend request by itself does not prove the account is limited. Privacy settings, blocks, restrictions on either account, or other account-specific conditions can also prevent an interaction. An unlimited user may be able to send a friend invitation to a limited user; that does not change the limited user’s status.
How to check whether your account is limited
- Sign in to the affected account. Check the notice shown when you try the blocked action or view your Steam Community profile.
- Open Steam Support. Go to Steam Support and search for “Limited User Accounts.” The support page is the best place to confirm the current rule.
- Review the account’s recorded spending. A commonly used route is Steam Support → My Account → Data Related to Your Steam Account → External Funds Used. Labels and availability can differ by client, language, and support-page design.
If Steam identifies a different restriction—such as a Market hold, trade ban, or VAC ban—spending toward the limited-account threshold will not resolve that separate issue.

What spending counts toward the $5 threshold?
The threshold is expressed in U.S. dollars. If your account uses another currency, Steam applies its currency handling; a local price that looks close to the equivalent may not be enough. Tax treatment and the exact amount Steam records should not be inferred from a store-page price alone. For certainty, choose a qualifying amount clearly above the apparent threshold and confirm it in your account record.
| Action | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Add funds directly to your own Steam Wallet | A standard qualifying route. Use Steam’s Add funds to your Steam Wallet page. |
| Buy a game directly through the Steam Store | A standard route if the qualifying amount is recorded on the affected account. Browse the Steam Store. |
| Buy DLC or software through Steam | Check Valve’s current limited-account FAQ for the eligible product categories and transaction conditions. |
| Redeem a Steam Wallet card or code to your own account | It may qualify when the value is credited to the affected account. Check the code’s region and redemption terms, and rely on Steam’s recorded amount. |
| Receive a game gift or digital gift card | Do not count on it to satisfy the recipient’s threshold; received value is different from qualifying spending recorded on that account. |
| Activate a retail CD key, receive a product through trading, or claim a free game | These generally do not count as qualifying Steam spending. |
| Sell items on the Community Market and spend the proceeds | Market proceeds are not the same as adding qualifying external funds to the account. |
| Make an in-game purchase or buy outside Steam | Do not assume it qualifies. The transaction must be recognized under Valve’s current rule. |
| Refund or charge back a purchase | A reversed transaction may no longer qualify; a chargeback can also affect Market purchase history. |
Valve’s limited-account guidance is the authority for qualifying transactions. Avoid borderline prices, gifts, retail keys, and third-party “unlock” offers if your goal is to change the account’s status.
How to remove the limited-account restriction
- Confirm the notice. Make sure Steam says the account is limited, rather than showing a Market or trade restriction.
- Check the spending record. Review the account’s external funds or transaction information in Steam Support, where available.
- Choose a qualifying transaction. The clearest options are adding funds to the affected account’s Steam Wallet or buying a product directly through Steam that meets the threshold.
- Complete it on the affected account. A purchase on another account, a received gift, or a retail key is not a safe substitute.
- Refresh and recheck. The status may not update instantly. Restart Steam or sign out and back in, then retry the blocked community action.
- Diagnose any remaining block separately. If Steam no longer says the account is limited but Market or trading access is still unavailable, check the Trading and Market Restrictions FAQ.
Steam Support generally does not manually waive a valid limited-user threshold. Contact Support when a qualifying transaction is missing or misrecorded, a payment was charged but not credited, the account may be compromised, or another account-specific error needs investigation.

Why might the Market or trading still be blocked?
Limited status is only one gate. Steam applies separate security and purchase-history rules to Market and trading access; becoming unlimited does not erase their timers.
Purchase must be old enough for the Community Market
Steam says an eligible successful purchase must be more than seven days old and no more than one year old for Community Market access. Wallet funds, games, DLC, and software can satisfy this rule under Steam’s conditions; retail CD-key activations and gifts do not. A chargeback resets the relevant purchase history. See Valve’s Market and trading rules.
Steam Guard and newly authorized devices
Steam Guard must generally have been enabled for 15 days before trading and Market access is available. A newly authorized device can cause a separate seven-day restriction. Clearing browser cookies, reinstalling Steam, or changing hardware can make a device appear new. Steam’s FAQ also explains how an authenticator active for at least seven days affects new-device restrictions.

Password resets, authenticator changes, and payment verification
A forgotten-password reset through Steam Support can cause a five-day restriction, or 30 days if the account had been inactive for more than two months. This rule concerns resetting a password, not simply changing it in account settings. Adding or removing a Mobile Authenticator can trigger additional holds. An unverified payment method can impose a three-day wait before Market purchases; a trusted payment method can still be subject to game-specific cooldowns.
Item holds, cooldowns, and enforcement
Some items have their own cooldowns or holds. Trade or Community bans and VAC-related restrictions are also distinct from limited status. Steam describes VAC effects in relation to the affected game and associated items; do not assume that a VAC ban is either the cause of every Market restriction or a general account-wide ban. A valid ban is not removed by spending money.

| Message or restriction | Typical cause | Does qualifying $5 spending normally fix it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited User Account | Insufficient qualifying spending on the account | Yes, if the transaction qualifies and reaches the threshold | Add qualifying Steam spending, then recheck status. |
| Steam Guard or new-device restriction | Guard is disabled or recently enabled, or the device is newly authorized | No | Meet the security requirement and wait for the timer. |
| Market purchase-age restriction | No eligible purchase within Steam’s required age window | No, not immediately | Wait until a qualifying purchase meets the age requirement. |
| Password-reset or payment-method restriction | Account-security reset or payment verification | No | Follow the applicable timer or verification instructions. |
| Trade or Community ban | Enforcement action | No | Use the ban-specific Support process; do not assume it will be reversed. |
| VAC ban | Anti-cheat enforcement tied to a game | No | Review Valve’s ban information; Steam says Support cannot remove a VAC ban. |
| Item cooldown or hold | Item-level security or game rule | No | Wait for the date or terms shown in the restriction notice. |

Troubleshoot “I spent $5, but Steam still says limited”
- Confirm which account made the transaction. It must be the account displaying the limited notice.
- Check the transaction type. A gift, retail key, Market sale proceeds, free activation, or an unrecognized in-game purchase may not qualify.
- Check the recorded value. The local-currency price may have fallen short of the USD threshold after Steam’s conversion or transaction handling.
- Check whether it was reversed. A refund or chargeback can change what counts.
- Refresh Steam and inspect the status again. Restart the client or sign out and back in before retrying.
- Contact Steam Support if the record is wrong. Include the transaction details if a qualifying payment was charged but is missing from account history.
If the limited notice has disappeared but Market access has not returned, diagnose the relevant Market timer or ban instead of making another purchase.
Avoid “Steam unlock” scams
People searching for an account unlock are targets for fake login pages and paid services. Use Steam’s own domains for account actions: steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com. Never give a third party your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or API key; do not install an “account unlocker” or pay someone who promises to remove a restriction.
If you suspect account compromise, secure the email account first, change your Steam password, revoke suspicious API keys, and review recent account activity. Steam Guard is a security measure, not a way to bypass the spending threshold.
